of all the videos that show how to do the timing belt, this one is the best. Sure it isn't sitting in the car, but it's by far the most helpful. Definitely helped me get the belt on and rotate the crankshaft to set the camshaft and HPFP. This is something that other instructions don't cover too well

As a mechanic i fount it perfectly understandable, never done an audi before but was going to treat the job as a twin cam belt change, VERY GLAD you showed about fuel pump and cam locks as had NO CLUE! BIG THUMBS UP!!!

Always mount the belt counter clockwise for the best accuracy. Then the adjustable pulleys should be moved maximum counter clockwise for the belt to fit perfectly. Finally when you mount the belt, move the pulleys clockwise, less than one tooth to engage the belt as good as possible. 👍🏻 Sorry for my english lol

Thanks so much for this. I followed other youtube guides and just couldn't get it right. Engine would crank but not start. After listening to your description i found it very helpful especially the part about adjusting the cam sprocket if things were not aligning up. Thanks so much for this you saved my van!

Great job! I wasn't able to purchase a belt tool before the job landed in my lap. I was still able to preform the job w/ 2 M6 bolts to pin the cams paint marked the crank. 🤞 Followed your steps and torque specs. Fired it up, purred like a kitten. It took 5 hours fun Saturday project.

The last timing belt I changed was back in the day.Im now an ex mechanic since 1980, but it was on a ford escort Mexico twin cam. Quite an intricate task. We had no pins or special tools and relied totally on lining up timing marks on the engine casing . Never had a problem though,just needed a socket set and a few spanner’s.

That approach doesn't work any more. If the timing of this engine is even slightly out, it doesn't start. You need the tools. Similarly with the Renault K4 engines. The good news is that they are incredibly cheap and work incredibly well.

I just finished it and then started panicking when I turned the engine twice and realized the camshaft and the pump weren't aligned anymore to the crankshaft and couldn't insert the tools. Thanks to your video I realized I didn't lose the camshaft bolts so it probably turned a few mm when I tightened the belt. Awesome video

There are no defective tools for the crankshaft TDC setting position. These are different tools completely for either the "oval" or "round" crank sprockets. Be sure to check whether timing mark on the sprocket is at the tip if the tooth or between the teeth.

Thanks for the video and clear instruction, has saved me plenty of money, some of which I will pass back to you.I agree with Scott Carlson (below) my timing was out yesterday a few degrees before starting the job no doubt due to worn-stretched belt, but replacing it with the Genuine VW belt, I did Not loosen Any of the adjusting bolts on the Cam pulley or High pressure Fuel pump pulley. After fitting the new belt and testing by rotating crankshaft, all timing marks were spot on, as per factory spec. And on the test drive yesterday, has given me more power.VW Crafter 35 2.0L Jumbo Van 2013. 127,000 ks

Top tip: my tdi was starting on 2nd or 3rd attempt sometimes and had uneven idling and somewhat powerless in streetcorners. All this due to an old stretched timingbelt. All timing marks were still in place! Was wondering about the problem for 2 years and no mechanic knew what the problem was. 😐

Firstly, I've done 2 cars with these instructions, they are brilliant, anyway: I've just worked out a tip for everyone who is or has struggled getting a water pump out with a high km VW. I was doing the timing belt on my wife's 300k km Amarok and I don't think the pump was done at the first belt change. The casting on the water pump that has a standard 6mm hole for mounting the centre lower timing belt cover bolt can be used as a jacking hole. Get a 6mm by 65 to 80mm long bolt, thread it into the hole on the water pump for the lower timing belt bolt. This long bolt will bottom out against the block. Carefully thread it in and it will break the seal by turning the pump slightly sideways. Don't over do it as you are only jacking one side, all you have to do it get it moving then wriggle it out. The pump I got out is 10000% harder than a Jetta I did with 150k km on it so my wife's was a worst case scenario.

Got it done! Thanks so much for this video, I was more than happy to contribute to your website! Couple things in retrospect though. ..I used Dieselgeek's "pro method" to remove the tensioner and stud. Very easy and no engine lift not worthwhile! I have a 2010 JSW with the CJAA, FYI. Removing the engine mounts and lifting the engine for me was overkill and too risky (especially with the car jacked up). Also, I broke the tabs on the return fuel line (so fragile) so I worked around them, which wasn't very hard at all. If you do remove the lines, I recommend removing the reservoir and using your fingers to squeeze them off. Picks will EASILY break the damn connectors (fragile was an understatement). You shouldn't remove them unless you plain want an excuse for buying a VCDS (like me!). Finally, what was the purpose of removing the plastic screws holding up the oil pan cover? Is that an inside joke because it was totally unnecessary and possibly a great joke(???). Thanks again!!! :)
@djr3485
@djr3485 7 жыл бұрын
I too recommend using Dieselgeek's method for removing the tensioner. The factory method takes longer and requires replacement of additional fasteners on the engine mount as well as the use of an engine support device. It also carries the risk of damaging the mount if it is not torqued correctly in the right sequence upon reinstallation. With some creative use of a double end box wrench and a triple square socket, you can still torque the tensioner to the correct specification - just make sure you adjust your torque wrench settings to factor in the extension.

@djr3485
@djr3485 8 жыл бұрын
An important word of advice for those doing this job. Once you set the tensioner correctly with the arrow in the gap and torque down the 15mm nut, do not be alarmed if it wanders either side of that original setting as you turn the crank. The VW Workshop manual doesn't explain this and it can cause some distress if you don't understand what is happening. If you look closely in the video, you will see the tensioner arrow likewise moves after it was set. I wasted much time trying to reset the tensioner only to have it move again when I turned the crank. For want of a better explanation, this seems completely normal and is the tensioner deflecting and adjusting with the forces of the valve train and compression stroke of the pistons.

If I don’t loosen the sprockets and move the crankshaft sprocket to get the belt on (even a tiny bit) will that affect the ability for my engine to start up? I did this nearly to spec but wasn’t sure such a small amount would give me start-up trouble. I have started the vehicle up a few times after the timing belt replacement but not consistently every time.

I have a couple of questions about this job. 1. The water pump I have has 8 vains (veins, not sure), but the pump that came out of the car has 7. They seem identical in every other way. Will this be a problem given it's just pumping water around? 2. I knocked the pin out of the fuel pump location and only noticed after I had the water pump out. I turned the notch back manually to the hole and put the pin back in but I'm wondering if this is going to be a huge problem now? The pin on the crank is still in and TDC.

All I can say is do exactly as this video suggests.I have been a tech old school to new school over 30 years.Pretty easy if your going through the technology change as it happens but specialty tools were sometimes impossible to get until years after the model was released.We made our own for cars like this but you had to have an inside tech from VW to let you borrow it or photo and micrometer the tool.I wish I had tools like this back during transition.Spent a whole day making tools and running around..THIS VIDEO IS A TOOL.Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have one question.What do you suggest I do with my fuel pump on my 2010 JETTA?I have no problems and I run my car according to VW specs fluids and all.I did switch to liqui mollyengine oil when I first bought the care being the oil and cam lobe wear VW blamed on using wrong oil which is possible however VW is well known to blame everyone else for their flaws until after class action law suit forces them to either fight it or admit it.The radio issue they should have covered and have not yet.RCD-510.Cam may be a little soft like Chevy early 305 late 70s. Also do you know if the wire harness for radio and steering wheel is the same as 2011 Jetta TDI for Maestro radio components used for aftermarket.Maestro starts at 2011 for their application my car is a very late made 2010 TDI.The only thing I may have to do is either swap the blue tooth unit under the seat for 2011 or nothing at all if the aftermarket I choose already has it built in.Do you have any suggestions for an aftermarket radio?We will be using original speakers and our phones to stream bluetooth and FM radio once in a while.Nothing fancy basically I am looking for a cost effective alternative and do not need upgrade from the sound the RCD put out.We do not use CD of DVD in the car or satellite just Pandora from phone.Sorry to semi hijack your thread here.Great job on the video.my radio has been out of car for weeks now deciding what to do.After the radio took bad it drained my battery as well.What a hassle.Thanks Bob
