O.K. 25 years ago I bought a book and read through it and for me it took some time, this guy explains it so quickly and accurately, he did skip the exhaust housing size, but they are easy to swap, one of my cars I went from a 0.86 to a 1.02 A/R and gained a lot top end and lost very little at lower RPM. Current build is a N54. I'm a full time dyno tuner and a mechanic for 37 years and this was a great refresher

I just want to share my personal lesson learned from sizing a turbo using this exact method - which resulted in lazy/laggy setup for street driving. I learned that you don’t need peak compressor efficiency at max RPM. It’s actually okay to be tapering off to the choke point at max RPM in a street application, which is what most factory turbocharged cars do. It is better to optimize peak compressor efficiency for the RPM range where you want to make power. With that in mind I would do the calculation at various engine RPM levels and compare the plot - looking for max efficiency at, for example, 5k RPM. It’s a good sanity check to plot the max RPM too, but not the number I’d care the most about.

It's been built with flat top Ross Pistons, lump ported head, Offenhouser intake and split manifold exhaust making 211 HP and 248 ft. lbs. of torque. My goal is 300 - 350 HP. Does this sound reasonable? My current compression ratio is 9.2:1. How do I determine how much boost my engine can handle before I damage anything? It'll be a street car with occasional trips to the track. I'm not sure how to apply all these amazing calculations at the moment. I'll have to watch your video a few more times. Brilliant explanation my friend, everything makes sense now with those calculations, before I did turbocharge with very low psi pressures for engine safety because I did not have the math to calculate the actual turbo speed lines. Now we are turbocharging a suzuki swift gti 1300cc, street circuit race car as we still race them in southamerica, when we live very far from real racing tracks. This year they change the rule book for this championship and they eliminated the 0 to 1300cc class that we used to race for many years , and put us into the 0 to 1650cc class with a minimum 970kg on the cars, wich is to much weight to add to an 750kg light car as ours. So the other option is to turbocharge the car and run the open class that has no limit on weight and we can even make the car a bit lighter and use full slick tires, I have a turbo kit that I had it from another suzuki engine with a Garrett AR 63 inlet turbine and a AR 60 compression wheel, but since it's being sitting around for many years I don't have the turbo lines graphics to check if is the proper one for this similar engine, we intend to get 250 crank hp and change the pistons because now we have 11,5 to 1 compression lower it to 8,5 to 1, I have MaxxECU so I can adjust for the turbo.I think the Turbo that you choose for the Miata it will work on mine as well ,the thing is that I still have to buy that one and I will like to find out if my Garrett it will be similar to that one before I do the purchase. Hopefully you have some experience with this Garrett turbo and can advise me on this set up.

It's fun to understand how something works. In school I was taught how to do square roots in the long hand fashion, just so we understood how to do it. It takes like three pieces of paper to do a small calculation. Therefore, you use a calculator or the generation before mine used slide rules. It was just trying to show you how it works. If you can't understand it, do you know what you should do?.... Call the company that makes the turbo charger. Tell them exactly what kind of an application you have, and they have somebody there that understands, and they will give you the best recommendation. It's not like he's asking you to build your own turbocharger, it was just trying to give you an idea how they work. The companies that make these products know exactly what works with what from experience. Or look up videos of Richard holdener, that guy runs more dyno pulls than anybody I've ever seen. I think he has cam autism lol. He runs every single cam and head combination possible. And he is a wealth of knowledge. He might actually have a video for what you're looking for already. Just cuz he does so much data

Watched quite a few videos on turbo compressor maps. Yours is without a doubt the best one. Thank you. And to answer your question - I am trying to pick the right turbo for my OM606 that will go into my Nissan Patrol Y61.

I love this video! I am working on finding a larger turbo for my 2018 WRX with the 2.0 FA20F engine, but one that has the best balance possible between fast spool and power up to at least 8k. After watching your video, I FINALLY have a grasp on how to make some sense of compressor maps and use them as a guide to select my turbo!

You lied... This video isn't long, nor is it at all boring. I've researched so much and here you go in 12 minutes just laying down all the math in plain english. I almost paid money for straight-forward information like this. Keep up the good work dude! ✌
