Personally I'd have a back to back backscene and have two layouts in one, maybe a village station and an industrial scene in the other.

Really developing nicely! The inclusion of the village and the goods yard have really brought it to life! I think a back scene will detract from the overall visual interest as you mentioned, it’s a visual treat from any angle now 🙂 looking forward to the next update!

How cute! The _small buildings_ along with the small loco & wagons are all nicely proportioned. The layout seems larger than it is. (Think of this as the activity _within_ a terminus.) This would be a nice shunter to bring to shows: run it continuously until a little (child) "customer" wants to learn & do a little shunting. 😊💜

Received my first little Kato starter pack from a fellow enthusiast in the mail as my first track and N scale trains, planning lots of the project. First purchase some buildings and cheap craft items from the dollar shop for scenery

not too keen on N or TT although Z are quite an entertaining little scale I stick with OO for perfect size and detail when my eyesight gets more bleary with age I'll have to retire on HO maybe but still, they all look great no matter what diorama ideas you can come up with! same with aquariums where you can create scenery with plants, wood & rocks

I see you got the Kato 2022-1 JR C12 Steam Locomotive running around real well. When I looked up that it can run the 150r curves I was shocked and picked one up myself. I hope it turns out great!

I like this layout very much. I have a 2x4 board and would use mainly UK outline, most of which I have. I would place the level crossing next to the station point and thereby create road ways to the station and goods yard. I wouldn’t want to add much, if anything to your plan as I feel that often less adds realism. Thank you as always for all the ideas you provide to us and the explanations.

Looking good Mike, have you considered a 'midscene' to split the layout in half and have a town area one side and industrial the other? I've always liked the idea of a 'two-in- one' layout. I look forward to seeing it progress 😎
@BudgetModelRailways
@BudgetModelRailways 12 күн бұрын
I did think about it but it's probably not quite wide enough to make it work. Also the controller is only on one side
@richardtarr2745
@richardtarr2745 11 күн бұрын
@BudgetModelRailways it would have to be a diagonal split to avoid the sidings so two sort of triangular layouts. I'm sure it's been done before 😎

@@BudgetModelRailways Could be fun to just ask people to mail in links to photos/videos of their layout and then post a list of links in a future video description that interested people could check out. No reason to comment on the submissions, unless there's something you really want to comment on.

Hello. If you remember me, I contacted you a short while ago with a problem with my Flying Scotsman de-railing at the points, or just shorting out. After a while, you advised me to try another train and not having any more I had to buy one. I bought a J50, a 0.6.0 loco, connected it to my coaches and it ran round lovely. In-depth investigation into the Scotsman engine revealed a 2mm side to side movement on axles 1 and 3. Hornby state this is within the tolerance, even though several videos say otherwise. The middle axle had no side movement at all. I checked the wheel alignments and found them all appeared ok. Frustrated, I checked millimetre by millimetre movement along the track but without power on because I couldn’t get the thing to run so slow. But I noticed that at one time the mid axle wheel appeared set inside the line of both axles 1 and 2, and at this point the wheel ran up over the plastic frog causing the short, I powered it up and the train ran perfect for a couple of laps, then jumped off. Frustrated again, 1 next put the engine in my mini table top vice, upside down and connected a power sauce to the wheels. Blow me down if the problem didn’t jump out and kick me. I saw the mid axle wheels buckled. Both wheels buckled action was the same ( if you understand what I mean) which to me, suggests the axle itself if bent. Needless to say the train is now with Hornby near Broadstairs Kent for examination and repair under warranty. I can only thank you for replying to my requests for help and your advice. Thank you again.

This one is ideal for a scene on an UK light railway, or a local continental line. I'm thinking about an N scale layout representing a local line here in my department, Isère, which had been put out of service in the 1930s, imaging it as if it still runs today. I'll see what I can do with my Kato or Tomix track, just in your own style.

Mike, the 1/4 inch foam-core board will put the goods shed and station at about the right height. A brick station platform would look nice with the cream colored station.

Remove the buildings and the layout design looks just like my small HO/OO layout that I have built at home, except for the angle the track is set at and the placement of the controller. I have also built an HO/OO Inglenook layout that is kept at my local club rooms, and I run it when the public running days are happening. Like your layout, the Inglenook has a curved head-shunt in order to cut down the size of the board needed to hold it all. Unfortunately, the club rooms are closed to the public at the moment, due to scaffolding that is up around the building because of repairs that are taking place The outdoor tracks that take people for rides are still operating on fine Sunday afternoons, and we had a night run recently to celebrate Matariki (the Maori new year).

I've now got a loop of the Kato track. Was thinking I'd add sidings similar to yours but I've just seen the price of the turnouts! 😮 £30 each, needs 4 of them! Basic loop it is, then! Can I ask what controller you use, please?
@BudgetModelRailways

The points do have integral point motors so they are cheaper than buying a point, seperate motor and mounting from say peco, but are expensive if you want to use them as manual points. We use our own PWM controller, details on our website

In answer to your question, you don't need a backscene with this sort of layout. Everything is in view, you don't need a fiddle yard or hidden operator area, so everyone can enjoy from every angle. A proper kitchen table layout just to run in the background or sit down and do some shunting. Keep it basic and fun 🚂👍
