I didn't even realise it was a woman writing. I thought it was a man writing. Robert Heinlein is the best, but NK's books are better than the Hugo winners in the last 5 years. Fat acceptance? Is that even a thing? Until recently did sci fi authors not get nominated if they were fat hahaha? Are you fat?

I’ve been an SFF reader for over 40 years, The Broken Earth is some of the best I’ve ever read and, more importantly, something that felt fresh in a genre that is often feels derivative even when entertaining. Jemisin earned those Hugos with hard work and a willingness to ignore the naysayers and haters.

How does it hold up against Dune trilogy, Deryni trilogy, Thomas Covenant series, Blue Mars trilogy, Ringworld, etc ?

Easily in the same class as all of these and some cases I'd say a step beyond. Plus, like some of these, she succeeds in breaking new ground thematically. And yes I have read all the series you mentioned in whole or in part. I haven't read all of Deryni nor have I read the Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. On the other hand I have read all of Frank Herbert, not just the Dune novels.

I've read much of the early Deryni work, including some of the stuff past the original Trilogy, and I'd say the broken earth series blows it out of the water. As much as I love the Deryni, Jemisin's work absolutely destroys that trilogy in my opinion. Covenant.. well, it's a matter of taste maybe? I didn't enjoy those books, though I've read them 3 times. They are different series, and have different meanings. Neither were easy emotional reads for me though. Both powerful in their own way.

I hadn't considered it, but Covenant is really the best comparison, isn't it? Deeply flawed protagonist who commits atrocities and feels themselves as removed from the greater whole, power is about choice, etc. Now I'm gonna have to reread Covenant (just finished re-reading Broken Earth). Also interesting--the comparison with "the Dune Trilogy" as opposed to the Dune Sextology. (Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson don't exist in this conversation). ...also regarding the Dune or Covenant comparison... I kinda want another 3-7 volumes of Broken Earth if such a story might eventually exist. :)

I think there is a bunch to be teased out about covenant vs broken earth, but I'd really need to re-read with a critical eye and people able to help me work it out. The surface comparison makes me itch, I think it's because of the "why" of the character's brokenness.

I say that in this speech, Ms. Jemisin tells a whole story, with a beginning, a middle and a triumphant conclusion. Plus, her joy in her win is more than clear. Well done.

As someone who read the entire Hugo shortlist each of those three years, I felt that each of those books was the first or second best of that field each year. She earned those Hugos.

Well, in fact the opposite is true, isn't it? The more consecutive Hugos Jemisin wins, the more damage to the credibility of the Hugo brand, which right now is below 0. One has to grudgingly admit this was a beautifully engineered trap.

Rogers, please ignore the whiny naysayers in the comments. I'm grateful you posted this, since the video of the whole ceremony was blocked by the BBC almost immediately after it ended. I watched the ceremonies live, and wanted to show someone this speech and was so disappointed it wasn't available. I tweeted this in a reply to John Scalzi last night and he ended up putting it in his blog post, so I suspect your views number will get higher. As for why the ceremonies video is blocked, I wonder if one of the naysayers below were instrumental in bringing it to the attention of the BBC (though I don't remember anything in the video that would be their intellectual property).

I think the BBC blocked it because of the 15-second clip from Doctor Who when Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form was awarded. It might have been a bot that found it instead of a human.

I never really got the impression she was being "petty" -- but simply pointing out a truth. (A not-so-obvious truth apparently, at least to some of the other commenters on this video.) I think she's a wonderful writer and this speech was inspiring. And yes, she is magnificent!

(Hard to guess the reading speed/habits of a stranger - you might have finished the entire trilogy by now, still be happily immersed in the first book, or anywhere in between - in any case: ) ENJOY! And yaaa..! I feel you so much. There are a few other authors that I really like and some that I even adore, but N.K. Jemisin is just on a whole other level.

Seeing that your comment is 2 months old, it's hard to guess where you are in the trilogy right now. I just finished The Obelisk Gate this morning on my train commute to work, and I'm blown away (again) by the brilliance of her work. Can't wait to dive into The Stone Sky. As a lifelong sci-fi/hard fantasy fan, reading N.K. Jemisin has been a breath of fresh air in a genre that's been in need of a new voice to shake it up for a while now.

I feel bad to ask this but how have I missed the woman until now? I came across her but watching someone's top 10 list of fantasy books/series. She was #2 only behind Game of Thrones, which was just ok to me so I decided to look deeper into her. SHE'S BLACK! That's a shame that it's a shock in this day and age because our people are great beyond measure and have been even before the keeping of time but seeing her made me open my eyes wider and want to know her story. I can't wait to buy everything she has written. CONTINUE TO SHINE BRIGHT SISTER ✊🏽.

I am not from North America, or from any developed countr, so I dont really care about this vindicating age you are having (after all americans were really bad with black people. I imagine that weight in your collective consciousness). I just care for great SciFi. With that said, is this series really that good? Does it worth it? Or is just political vindication? Rogers Cadenhead SF has always recognized the achievements of women writers. I have a big collection of books, many written by women. So I do not understand why this sounds new to you. It's not new at all. LeGuin, Kurtz, Shinn, Rand, Bradley, Norton, Yolen, Rusch, Russ, Wilhelm, etc.

I'm a Heinlein fan. But yes, Jemisin is absolutely a better *writer*. Hands down. Heinlein himself woulda said so.

I am in the middle of "The Stone Sky" right now and... it wasn't the best series of books I have read in my life. Definitely, I won't read it again, and this is my primal criteria. The books aren't bad, but I just have no idea why there is so much hype about Jemisin.

SPOILER ALERT...... Read the first book, having two child murders where the murderes are their own parents, decided not to read the other ones. The first murder by a brutal beating even the boy was thinking it was a game while his father savagily beat him to death. The second murder a mother smuthering her creature. Just too dark for my taste.

I read the first two books, they are not bad but they are certainly not the best SciFi/Fantasy books released in the last few years. I would say the recent works by Neal Asher, Peter F. Hamilton, James S.A. Corey, Alastair Reynolds and others were all better and failed to even be shortlisted. I really could not give a fuck about her genitals or her skin tone. It is not even relevant for a moment. I care only for the words on the pages (or screen). IMO this series is not worthy of these awards.

No clue how this ended up in my recommendations, but great speech? Really? Ah um ah um ah ah. This is may be a great writer, but her speech delivery is horrid. The first 30 seconds were unbearable. Sucked so bad couldnt get passed it.
