As you see in the video, I like the NÜOBELLS and think the design is genius. My only worry, and we'll see over time, is that the durability won't be there in comparison to other adjustable dumbbells that are on the market. We'll see...

The more nice and convenient the design, the durability decreases. It's a trade-off. That's why we have Powerblock, Ironmaster, and Bowflex going against each other. If a dumbbell had all the benefits of the 3 without the disadvantages, there wouldn't be any competition

Hi Nuo, I have a set of the US version 80lbs. There was one instance where the last plate got loose, I contacted the manufacturer and they were able to send replacement connector pieces the plastic pieces top and bottom of the weight plate which I changed out and now it’s fine. I want to know how often does this happen. I love the design but just not sure on the durability of these plastic pieces due to the constant abrasion and wear of putting in and back. All metal would be better but I can see why this was done, to access the handle in case the handle gets stuck, any thoughts? Thanks
@pelledozer

@marucat2797
@marucat2797 3 жыл бұрын
@@pelledozer hi Pelle, thank you for the response. What was the reasoning for the plastic connection pieces? Was it so if the handle is faulty it can be accessed by separating the plates from the plastic pieces since they are malleable. If they were alloy or some type of iron/steel this would not be possible I believe. I like the design but like other mentioned, the plastic parts may fail over time which can replaced but does cause some worry especially when doing anything overhead like chest press or shoulder presses. So far I had to change out the last weight plate connector pieces, handle, and the hook/tab on the cradle that locks into the handle. Since these replaceable it wasn’t a problem but it’s too bad these are failure points. Maybe improvements can be made to the next generation or better way to secure the end plates together

Thanks for the great review. This is similar to the short-lived Bowflex ST560's (5 to 60). I purchased them when they first came out and was promised an add-on kit to 100lbs (then BF reneged). They are no longer being made because of problems Bowflex had with the single hand change (like these) breaking. Mine do stick at times, but this type of adjustment feels normal as does the grip. I just wanted to add that the warranty on these Nuobell dumbbells is 2 years from the date of invoice. Buyer responsible for return shipping.

I understand the advantages of the Powerblocks, but definitely love Nuobells much more from the design and practicality point of views and would definitely buy them for my home gym where I would be the only person using them couple of times a week. With multiple users and more frequent usage I would also be wary of the plastic parts malfunctioning at some point, and would probably go with Powerblocks which are well tried and tested for a decade now! Price-wise I personally would happily shell out $200 to $250 more for Nuobells in exchange for a better dumbbell-like design and feel in the hand as oppose to save money on Powerblocks but get an ugly, square and strange feeling design. Although I get the Powerblocks do the job as well. Just my two eurocents, folks.

Very reasonable comment and I agree with you 100%. Powerblocks are hard to beat with their durability but the awkwardness of their shape, etc. makes them less than desirable. I personally prefer the iron masters though. You have the option to go all the way up to 160 pound dumbbells and they are traditional dumbbells with no plastic and a lifetime warranty. The only downside to iron masters is how slow it can be to change weights but that hasn’t been a huge deal to me

I fully agree with every point you've made for all adjustable dumbells in general. Ever since COVID, I wanted to get some workout equipment I could use for awhile and something that wasn't too bad. The PowerBlock Elite EXP 2020 was the one I chose and while I love them, the things you pointed out were definitely issues I had as well. The Non Knurled grip, the fact some workouts wouldn't be possible and the slight annoyance when switching between weights. Looking at the Nuobell, it has the look I would buy but the build quality in certain areas is too worrying for how much money they are. Hopefully the company learns from this video cause I wouldn't mind dropping a thousand if the plastic was metal and the weights were heavier as well.

Duane Gogh I want to agree with your point since it’s logical. But I feel that not every gym owner has the space to have 50-120 lb DBs separately. My only issue with this review from a design engineer's point of view is your view of plastic. There are thousands of plastic varieties with a wide gamut of physical properties. Plastic is often used to PREVENT wear or greatly reduce it where metal on metal will surely wear, bend, scratch, gouge, gall, etc. Plastics are used for impact protection, thermal protection, friction reduction, etc. It's all about choosing the right plastic for the job. Millions of cheap Chinese manufacturered merchandise that have plastic which was selected more for cost savings than function, have made "plastic" a bad word when it's often a godsend with proper design and application.

Great video Coop. I'm in the market from some adjustable dumbbells' and got excited when I saw this. I just went to their website and thought I'd let everyone know of their warranty. It's only 2 years and you have to pay for shipping, insurance, handling, packaging!!! I can imagine that would be really expensive depending on what's wrong with the dumbbell. I'm also concerned about the plastic parts you highlighted in your video.

I design gym equipments. I think if you use it with basic care, the product is fine. The plastic on the inside is shielded by outer plates, so they are fine. But the the click system can break with repeated impact whip force, like dropping a mechanical watch. If you drop it at an angle the plastic on the ring will break 100%. Also it relies on the rails to keep things snag, aligned and straight. Once plastic on the rail is loose or broken, the thing is gone. And all it takes is carelessly putting the dumbbell back quickly.

Got mine about 1 month ago. They are exactly what you hope them to be. Easy but snappy locking mechanism and simple but robust design. The plates aren't as fixated as on usual dumbbells, so it's rattling a little bit but it's absolutely tolerable. Would not change a thing (which doesn't happen often). I also got the stand which is pretty nice as well

I bit the bullet and got the stand when I ordered the Nuobells. I had another brand of adjustable dumbbells and used my jump box for the stand. Needless to say that got annoying. Putting them on the ground sucked too so when I converted to the Nuobells I made sure to get the stand too. In my opinion I think it makes them look better in my home gym too. I know that’s a little vein but something about putting an $800 pair of dumbbells on the floor didn’t seem right. So even though I dug deeper in my wallet, I’m glad I made the job to the Nuobells with the stand.

Great review! I was told by a fitness equipment store employee that the above-mentioned dumbbells are a bit flimsy and don't lock securely enough for his liking. With regards to design, I personally think they look awesome, but I have to say the gripping area is a bit small. In other words, someone with big hands may find these dumbbells to be a tad uncomfortable. If you haven't done so already, please review the MX55 by MX Select; I believe it has a double-locking mechanism and a larger (meaning longer) knurled handle. While you're at it, you might want to review the MX80 as well, which is the exact same concept as the MX55 except in both straight and E-Z bar format.

yeah but a plain manually adjustable dumbbell is only $75 for a set of two and for that price it replaces that entire dumbbell rack in the same way the only reason these "full sets" of dumbbells exist is so that multiple people can use them at the same time in a gym instead of having to share a single set of adjustables so for home gym you can choose between $75 manual adjustable vs $800 auto adjustable and it no longer has anything to do with the "full rack of dumbbells" argument IMO it's just that awesome feeling of no longer having to think, screw, and build your db all the darned time

Hey many thanks for the reviews! It would be great if you could do a comparison of the dimensions of these adjustable dumbbells to your fixed dumbbell set. I have found any dumbbell with a >9" diameter starts to interfere with your body with certain movements. The length would also be great too, especially with the lower weights like 10-50lbs.

@cbagot1
@cbagot1 3 жыл бұрын
These look like they’d last longer than the bow flex ones, but I’d venture that the dial system won’t give you a long lifespan. I’ve had powerblocks 5-70lbs for over a decade, and while I agree that the shape can get in the way, it’s not an insurmountable problem. Those things are bulletproof and you’d have blow welds to get them to break. Anything with small moving parts in a device that will likely see repeated heavy impacts is bound to fail sooner rather than later.

I never trusted these kinds of weights because im afraid of one of the plates falling off and hitting me in the head or something. With regular rubberized dumbbells you know there are no moving parts , so you dont have to worry about something falling off or detaching. Thats about the only worry I have besides that a lot of the parts are plastic. Wish they made it completely metal.

Okay, so i had same exact dumbbells and write my opinion to warn You all. First i pressed dislike, when i saw so much compliments to this product at start of video, but later i pressed Like, when he started to tell about negatives too. I had the exact Chinese copy with exactly same design, 22kg each max (45lb~) for 300 euro (400$) and I do not recommend to buy this mechanism if You training often. I sold them and bought Powerblock for 500 euro and just happy with it! Benefits for Nuobell: Very fast to adjust weight, space around hand for different angles of training, really nice-looking design. Negatives: My dumbbells was with plastic inner rod (that's ridiculous), here we see metal, but this not change fact, that after some time it will start to stuck during weight change (weights not always are inline on stand and inner hole for rod are not perfectly aligned, that’s causes problem, that changing weight sometimes are impossible - too much pressure on mechanism, you must rotate it back to smaller weight and then back to needed, sometimes 2-3 attempts) - too much moving parts. You not allowed to drop it, because there are mechanism and it can bend or some part may break. When you put it down, you must be very careful to place it on exact correct position, otherwise you can damage it or other parts. When you take maximum weight, stand always sticks to the dumbbell and if you not be careful, it will drop on floor on your foot (and its metallic). Just compare with Powerblock - how big are these dumbbells in size - it’s totally not comfortable to do biceps curls or shoulder press! Also you can see, that sometimes when you put dumbbells on stand, it not fits correctly, because weights on stand can move a bit. Plastic parts starts to wear and my weight often was sticking one to each other - in result I lifted dumbbell and 1 additional weight were stick and then fell of to the ground. Imagine it can fell on you foot or even your head. If you compare with Powerblock - there are much safer weight blocking mechanist and even faster to adjust weight. I don’t want you to buy Powerblock, but want to warn you about these types of dumbbells. They are not safe and not comfortable than its looks.

@@ah7027 The way I'm understanding it is the groves/channels on the extending bar is what drives them inwards/outwards when twisting the handle when placed on the rack.
