Follow along as I continue the build of my N scale model railroad. In this episode I unbox the laser-cut N scale helix kit, and then progress with the building of this kit. I'll show you all the steps and explain the process as I build this helix.
Be sure to subscribe to my KZfaq channel to follow my layout building progress. Also please follow my Facebook page, / chicagosubnscale as I will be adding photos and updates to that as I build my new layout.
The laser-cut helix kit was bought from Gleiswendel Shop (Track Helix shop) www.gleiswende...
This is a German company supplying laser-cut model railroad helix kits in Z scale, N scale, TT scale and HO scale. Please note the website is in German (their English-translation site is incomplete), so I used a combination of rusty German and Google Translate to choose and place my order.

Nicely produced video. This is definitely the way to add a helix, much easier than making your own. I was sceptical at first that you were using Kato track but no longer as I see how much easier it is than laying double, super elevated flex track. Looking forward to following the build and installation.

Thank you, David! Yes, I wasn’t sure about using Kato track until I saw a video by Mike Fifer showing how he built a helix using the same track. Much easier and can be done after the helix is built. Next video will show the track install (although might post a teaser video on my Facebook page - search for BNSF Chicago Sub in N Scale on Facebook

Would be even better if they produced a kit which matched the Kato super-elevated track!

Dave, there is a UK company that makes one for the Kato track, but they currrently have a very long lead time, plus it is made from MDF (Medium-density fibreboard), whereas this one is made from plywood, which I prefer

Very nice video and kit. Thanks for sharing - will definitely have a look. Just wondering - would it not be easier to lay the track and wire it as you go along, or did you just assemble for demonstration?
@peter_borcherds

Glad you liked it. I did consider adding the track as I went, but with Kato Unitrack it was so easy to add it afterwards. In fact, it allowed me to adjust it more and move it around to suit

Fantastic video cause I have been looking for a quality prebuilt helix system. I will probably go for these. Does he ship to the USA? Liked and subscribed! I might go with your suggestion at the end to find a company here in America.

Thank you! Glad you like it. No idea if that company ships to the USA unfortunately. However I’m sure there are equivalent companies in the US who would be a lot cheaper...plus you wouldn’t have to translate everything 😀

Nice video on the Helix.can I ask what is the % rise/fall. I'm currently waiting on a helix kit from a UK manufacturer for my own layout. The rise/fall is 2.15% - so interested to know if your kit from Germany has the same gradient. Cheers Euan
@peter_borcherds
@peter_borcherds 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Euan. Glad you like the video! The % gradient is about a 2.5% grade (according to AnyRail).

@@Wrathchildss www.gleiswendelshop.de/ is where I got mine from (German website), but I’ve also looked at www.modelrailwaysolutions.co.uk/collections/helix-kits (based in the UK). Haven’t used theirs so can’t comment on quality

I wonder if the cost of this is on-par with scratch building when all things are considered (materials, errors, etc.)?
@ChicagoSubNScale
@ChicagoSubNScale Жыл бұрын
I doubt it...helix and baseboard kits are not cheap, and I think even with materials, time, etc, it'll work out a lot more. But...I'll definitely choose it again as it saves so much time and aggro 😀

How many cars can you pull on this grade without helper units, etc. Assuming maybe you have 2-3 locos in front and that is all.
@peter_borcherds
@peter_borcherds 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe. I've only tested with 10 autoracks so far - a single ScaleTrains Dash9 struggles and wheelslips halfway round the first curve, but with 2 at the front goes up nicely. I haven't tested with my Kato units yet, but based on previous tests, my Kato locos have a lot more pulling power - will test it this weekend
@jbdbackfan
@jbdbackfan 3 жыл бұрын
@@peter_borcherds I think that is my fear of using a helix, I enjoy running long trains (75+ cars) and doubt any helix could work with a train that length. My kato Dash 9s can pull 75+ cars no issue on flat surface, but with a grade I begin to wonder. What grade is your helix?
@peter_borcherds
@peter_borcherds 3 жыл бұрын
@@jbdbackfan I think it’s about a 2.27% grade (according to AnyRail), quite steep. Most go for a bigger helix with lower grades, but I was limited to space

What is the diameter of the Helix? What dia/number Kato track did you use?
@peter_borcherds

Hi Todd! I'm using the Kato 20-181 (414/381mm Super Elevated) track. Helix is 95cm (37.4”) diameter
