What details do you add? Can you add too many? Can you clutter a scene and ruin it? I answer these questions in how I approach building scenes and dispel the notion of over detailing a scene if done appropriately.

I like everything you said, I use a craft cert from Walmart to put supplies in. They have that usually three drawers then I use hot wheels like I like detailing cheap and then I use cotton ball, stretched out with gray to get smoke affect but your layout is amazing

Actually a fire department would have its ladder up like that because they should require to test for proper function at least once a week, so that is in fact something you could see outside a firehouse. More in rural department than in heavy city enviorments.

you are absolutely my inspiration for my layout room right now. the way you work on things and whatnot. like moving on even though the scene isnt "complete" is something i picked up from you.

You are correct, I always have gaps to fill and sometimes it takes longer than expected..When I watch videos like yours you see things that oh this’ll make mine look better if I change this and add that..finally I have a happier ending and it looks better..vehicles are the hardest to find..sometimes if you find them they are super expensive..this is a search and find them at better prices..eventually you get lucky..you have very nice designs and details..I saw some things I like and will tweak it to my collection..thanks for sharing..

That makes so much sense. It's easy to overdo detailing, plus it's expensive! Thanks a lot form your thoughts.

At our fire dept we do daily check offs and that includes making sure the ladder works. So if you add some of the guys washing the truck it’ll look like they are doing their daily check offs and daily wash.

Great video! I think the construction scene looks great and not over crowded at all.

thanks! i'm extremely critical of construction scenes on layouts because I'm in the industry so when i see people just slap random pieces of equipment together it sets me off LOL. it shouldn't but it's like - that's not what they would have on site for that!

@19:36, absolutely right on buying stuff you don't need now but you like anyways. I did that back in 2000 when I took a big break from the hobby as I was in the process of getting married. I had bought a bunch of locomotives (mostly Kato and Atlas) and rolling stock, mostly MicroTrains. I have a ton of new stuff waiting for me to finally build my layout. An example, to pick on one, my Kato Amtrak P42 dual engine set. I paid $139.00 for that back in 2000. It's new in box. Care to guess how much it's worth now? I have a full set of that Kato Amtrak train. Don't remember how many coaches. I think 12 in total. A bunch of my rolling stock (of various needs and variety), mostly MicroTrains, again, new in box, I bought back then. I'd spend a fortune if I were to buy that stuff now. So, great point. Prices always go up and rarely, if ever go down. So if you see something you like and have the money for it, buy it now because it will not be cheaper in the future.

This is a really wonderful video. Two things to take away are, that it is your layout so you can do what you wish. The second is thst you can keep coming back and impriving or adding to things. I am impressed with what you have fitted in to such a relatively small area. Thank you.
@AlleghenyNorthern

thanks. yes, N scale allows a lot of material to be crammed into a small space without making it look unrealistic. ultimately, the railroad and its details belong to the builder and whatever they deem necessary - is necessary. that includes a random t-rex on a flat car!

Great video and advice! I don't care about what anyone else thinks, I make my layout for me...nobody else needs to like it but me - if I'm not happy then I have to change it...nobody else...doing a scene to a certain level of completeness is great because you can move on and return to it with fresh eyes later. I like the way you do things - Cheers from Melbourne, Australia - I subbed your channel.

a fresh set of eyes on a scene days or months later makes a big difference. i've torn out quite a bit of layout because later on i decided it wasn't what it needed to be. but in the end, it's really about what the modeler wants, right? so no matter how ridiculous the scene - it's gotta be right!

Great video ! Explaining the way you model your layout is a good way for the rest of us to understand the how to. You’re spot on if you see something you need down the road you better get it because it may not be there later. My biggest issue is I don’t try to get the same road numbers on my roll stock. But on coal trains I don’t worry as much. Those numbers are so small who is going to know , but I do and I’m ok with that. Thanks for your thoughts and sharing. Have a good week. 😎😎 👍

i have a couple hoppers that have the same road numbers - i made a mistake pick randomly at the hobby shop. no one but me knows and i pretend to forget. i also have two CSX locos that have the same number.. that's a little bit more of a problem because the numbers are bigger.

Awesome video man. Really enjoy seeing all the models in detail. Question for you. Who makes (what's the manufacturer) of the Komatsu excavator in your fracking scene?
@AlleghenyNorthern

ah, that's a favorite of mine - i have two. they're from TommyTec and used to be about $25 - but they're impossible to find. i'm not sure if the company went out of business or if they're just not being important as they're from Japan. I can't find them online anymore.

8:30 They're all toys really so what's the difference? It's all art as well. I have built a lot of sci-fi and fantasy scenery for games, RC parts and models of all sorts and really just because I like making art and miniatures.

some folks take it a little hard to the paint and get upset when others express a little creativity different than their own. it takes all types in the hobby - it's not something i get terribly excited over - always say, do what you like.

First question where did you get those vehicles? Do you buy from Shapeways? And is that Kato track? And yes your railroad do what you want. Some take things to seriously. If I may roof details a must, AC units vents etc. pole wires at the very end. And I believe to keep each scene time period correct even if not the whole RR. I just can’t get past that Kato track. But I’ll still watch your videos, there’s always something new to learn. I’m expanding soon , videos coming shortly
@AlleghenyNorthern
@AlleghenyNorthern 7 ай бұрын
vehicles are a mix. a lot of them are from shapeways or from vendors at shows selling prints. others are GHQ or showcase miniature metal models, and some of them are japanese imports. the track is Kato Unitrack. other than painting the rails, i haven't done any weathering or blending into the scenery with it anywhere other than in the snowy areas.

Great layout, only thing that bugs me is the bent/tangled electrical wires on the poles. They just need tightening up a bit?
@AlleghenyNorthern
@AlleghenyNorthern 7 ай бұрын
i typed out a response to you a couple days ago and it appears it never posted. odd - but yes, the poles - particularly the wires need reworked. i'm constantly bumping them which is why i'm letting them go for now and the way they going in the woodland scenics kits is garbage - it's just black thread. i'm going to replace them at some point with an elastic line - one i'm mostly done knocking them over.

multiple - the longest reeds are 12mm, but there's 6, 4, and 2 on the layout.
