When I got this SD35 it needed lots of work. You can follow along as I change the electric motor and repaint the shell to match a Penn Central prototype.

I have never ever had a Atlas N scale locomotive run top notch. Just bought a GP35 and have to push start it every time. Just can’t beat Kato for performance,

I found this video very interesting, and learned a good deal on how to take apart and replace a motor. Very nice work !!!!!!

Nice work! This taught me about dismantling an N scale engine and rehabbing it, excellent!

To commenters below. Be careful. They (Atlas & Kato) aren’t building them like this anymore. They are a much tougher reassemble now. Atlas now uses micro wires to connect the truck sets to the frame. At least on the Master line. And Kato trucks are a monumental PITA to reassemble. One of my Kato SD40’s was Knocked off the layout by a derailment. Front truck came out and was popped apart. Driveshaft also fell out. It’s currently in the mail, out for repair at a shop because I could not figure out how to reassemble. The Atlas 8-40C, all the wires broke off. Couldn’t get the solder to stick, and when I did, the wires would get pulled back off the trucks while trying to put the truck frame back together. With The modern stuff you really need a work station with lighted magnifier glass to see well enough.

I love N Gauge which is what I have but is packed away now. Really like your crossing gates. Your locomotive turned out really good.

How much did a new motor cost in dollars?

I usually buy stuff on ebay. just type: N scale SD35 motor and there's a good chance to find one.

How could anyone burn a motor in these locos? My experience with Atlas Diesels is they have shown to be bullet proof!
@watchtrainshere81276 жыл бұрын
Well... I don't know what apppenned, it looked like it went for a while, long enough to melt the shell! Usually the engines I get still runn. I bought a liffe-like C424 once that had been run all day and all night by a hobby store to display in its window. That had a lot of miles on it. They let it run like that until it stopped. That also looked like it was a pertty tough little unit. I replaced the motor and its still going! Just like the real engines we run them until they quit!

It could have been a kid putting under extreme loads with the power on the top speed, I can't think of any other way.

or running a dc loco on a dcc layout will burn motors out
