N&W J-Class 611 Streamlined Steam Locomotive in Action 1994!
In 1994, restored Norfolk & Western J-class steam locomotive, number 611, led three excursion passenger trains through the southeastern United States. A 4-8-4 Northern-type, number 611 powered the “Autumn Leaves Special,” “Asheville Special,” and the “Carolina Special.” It was built in May 1950, retired in October 1959 from regular service, and then restored in 1982. Home for number 611 was the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.
