I used to drive a log truck before I started work with the railroad. I had a 1992 red Peterbilt with a 400 Cummins and 10 inch straights with no muffler and I used to make some racket, especially with 40 tons of pulpwood. That was a nice video. There was a switch where you could switch between 2, 4, & 6 cyl. jake brake.

A jake brake works on electric solonoids, an extra cam lobe and an extra valve in the cylinder with a collapsible stem. When the jake is on, the solonoids turn on a magnet, which make the valve stem extend out, allowing the camshaft to open the valve when the piston is at max compression (just before the fuel is injected)...allowing the compressed air/fuel to burn outside of the cylinder.... the turbo spools up, increasing intake pressure and providing more stopping power while using the jake.

Correct, master switch on the dash to turn on/off. When switched to the ON position, Jacob's is activated when both the clutch and accelerator (both fitted with micro-switches) are not depressed, hence why when you change gears without clutch whilst switched to ON, Jacobs will come on for the short time your foot is off the accelerator as you change gears

@iMcguy Hi, a turbo wastegate is fitted to a turbo to release excessive exhaust pressure from the turbo when the engine revs drop suddenly, such as when you change gear quickly. The wastegate is controlled by the pressure side of the turbo. Excessive inlet manifold pressure operates an air cylinder that opens the wastegate on the exhaust side. Turbo's working at lower pressures on lower powered engines often dont have a wastegate. Scooze me fer pokin' me nose in!
@caleb50511 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love shifting with the jakes on. We've got at 88 Peterbilt 378 dump truck where I work with an N14 in it. Shifting with the jakes on is the probably the greatest thing in the whole fucking world. Love doing this. Jake brakes are prolly my greatest love, if I drive a truck without any sort of engine brake in it, it's like I'm driving naked lol.

my buddy has a older volvo with a n14 and a 5in straight pipe.ive ridden with him a few times hauling corn and we always use the jake at every corner and stop sign

the isx is a dual overhead cam with something called Cummins-own jake braking system....it uses one camshaft to operate the jake brake and from what i heard it works really good. The company i work for just bought a new sterling with an isx and a 13 speed....i dunno what horsepower the new isx has, but i'll letcha know when i find out

dude this is the best jake braking video i can find on youtube... Sure is a bad ass sound man, to bad we don't have that shit over here. thanks for the upload
@Bigd351clevo13 жыл бұрын
@bkorven The Jake brake cuts off at a specific RPM to prevent stalling, and there is a switch to turn it on/off. There is also another switch to set the strength of the engine brake (hi/low) where low would slow you down less. Kind of hard to explain without actually showing someone how it all works, but you've got the jist.
@chevboy9412 жыл бұрын
My uncles got a 2001 kw with straight 12in stacks and the best time to jake in it is with a full load of bales going down this hill about 6 miles from our house about 65 lol its pretty cool
@Bigd351clevo13 жыл бұрын
@bkorven Yeah 82Cmb is right. Using either the freeplay at the top of the clutch pedal or the throttle pedal (just touching either pedal, so not actually engaging the clutch or throttle) or if the revs are below around 1000rpm, the jakes will not come on. So you can shift normally (no clutch) by resting your foot on the clutch freeplay or not take your foot fully off the throttle (not lift your foot off the top 5mm of travel) - takes a bit of practice. I think that makes sense...

@utoobube14 жыл бұрын
@SUZUKIRIDERR that is correct, it does leave the exhaust valves open, thereby releasing compression...slows the motor with the truck in gear, it slows the truck.
@Thinker66914 жыл бұрын
Cummins is one of the best englines ever. Long live Cummins!
@TheWarlock11713 жыл бұрын
Actually Jakes will come on in Neutral. The dip settings control all functions. So if you don't have them set you will get different operations. Some wont work under certain speeds and some wont work unless your in higher gears. It all depends on how the computer dip settings are set. My truck has a Signature 600 Cummins, it works until it gets to 800 rpm and stops, but at any speed. Thats the way I like it. Some companys had their jakes set like this for their own reasons. GO STRAIGHT PIPES
@zillyberk13 жыл бұрын
Actually a wastegate opens up to regulate the pressure on the intake side. If the wastegate is disconnected the turbo will keep building pressure causing damage to the intercooler, intake tubes, the manifold or in the worst case scenario the engine. The valve on the intake side prevents the turbo from going into turbine stall and also helps drop the boost when you back off the throttle suddenly.
@MrVideoman4411 жыл бұрын
Well seems like many people are converting the older style full size Chevy Caprice to diesels the 6.2 GMC diesels and with the car being 4200 pounds gas mileage is going up to 35-37 mpg! I got a 1989 Caprice wagon with 257,000 miles and counting has the olds 307 in it with the 4 bbl. I am thinking of a diesel switch. I just love that Jake brake on your truck! Too bad freight trains don't have that feature! I am a foamer I do love trains too!
@shanidar11 жыл бұрын
The turbo has a wastegate, which is what dumps the excess pressure. It activates when he hits the clutch. Without a wastegate, when he clutched to change gears, the engine would rev high because of the residual pressure.

Cummins jakes are buy far the best!
@robaveley15 жыл бұрын
The jake (full name Jacobs) brake is prevented from coming on by micro-switches fitted to both the clutch pedal and accelerator pedal, ie as you use the jake brake to reduce speed, the jake brake is switched off as you change down gears and as you let the clutch back out is is switched on again... problem is though, when you race around like this cowboy and change gears without using the clutch, for the split second when you are not depressing the clutch OR the accelerator, the jake brake starts

@bkorven13 жыл бұрын
@Bigd351clevo I think I understand, what you say is that you dont either fully release the clutch pedal or gas pedal(or keep the engine under a specific rpm) to prevent it from jake braking? Seems annoying still and kind of unefficient sometimes, why not use a button to adjust the jake brake.
@suzug227 жыл бұрын
What's this truck? My best video of the N14 power and sound. Grates!
@DrMcelroy14 жыл бұрын
Dirtbike125r... Ok i gotcha now... Like you said, when you hit the throttle it turns the jake off but if you let off too much it kicks on. It just takes some getting used to i rekon, i have a hell of a time with em... I usually just go on and turn em off till i need them.
In the Classics cuz i drove one, you have the options of 2 and 4 but you can also turn them both on engaging all 6 and it wont shut your engine down...I drove everywhere with all 6 engaged, just cuz its easier to slow down and doesnt wear the brakes as bad.
