Clayfighter 63 1/3 went through development hell. It was planned to have 2-D backgrounds without the circle arenas but Interplay shifted to 3-D backgrounds probably to make the Killer Instinct combo system more interesting (The 2-D game looked like shit so it's okay). One of the consoles they initially planned to release this game on didn't come out as well so they had only the PSX and N64 to choose from. Very questionably they went with the N64 version which completely annihilated the quality of the sprites (they're also not only cut into parts but much smaller than the actual sprites should have been; not to mention they removed frames from the characters meaning entire sprites went unused) and they had to remove some background elements as well. The biggest downside of course was having to remove certain characters because it was a relatively early N64 game (the sounds were not pitched way up to save space like in later N64 games). One of the characters (Hobocop) was scrapped entirely for both 63 1/3 and Sculptor's Cut while the other four removed characters were brought back in the latter game, meaning a whole character's worth of sprites went to waste. In terms of gameplay Interplay not only removed the Killer Instinct based combo system but removed charge specials (I don't remember how many but I remember everyone having two so chances are most characters got at least one removed) as well as a few Claytalities to make space for the new characters in Sculptor's Cut. The sprites are also bigger so it looks a bit nicer than 63 1/3 at the expense of less fun gameplay. The lone copy of the PSX version (also known as Clayfighter Extreme) is owned by a guy named Mike Mika, who did put up footage of the game, but not much.

I have 63 1/3 and I LOVE IT. Loved Clayfighter almost 20 years ago, still love it today.

They seriously need to bring back Clayfighters on nextgen

FUN FACT: Sculptors Cut was a blockbuster exclusive when it was released and is in the top 3 rarest N64 games of all time. The cart alone goes for over 1000 dollars. If you want the box and manual, both even rarer than the game, you'll be shelling out anywhere from 2000 - 5000 dollars.

I use to play Clay Fighter 63 1/3 a lot when I was 11 or 12 around 2001 or 2002.. I use to be really good at it.. and I use to do a lot of Claytalities And I use to do a long super special combo.. I still got it still this day... They need to do a new clay fighter....

You know I had this idea for a Saturday Morning Cartoon based off Clayfighter, except it would be about the Clay Meteorite crashing nearby middle school/high school combo where the students discovered the clay and they when they started making sculptures in the art class the sculptures turn into the Clayfighters from the games depending on what the theme of the sculpture (for example if you make a circus themed sculpture you get Honker the Clown and if you make a pet themed sculpture you get Lockjaw) and uses them to fight eachother and mess around and all that, eventually the military starts getting involved and there's this evil general in the military who secretly wants to use the clay as a weapon to take down the President of the United States with at first hiring mercenaries to try to steal them then eventually holding a Clayfighter Tournament to lure the clayfighters in, and it would basically be Pokemon if it was a Stephen Spielberg cartoon with a pinch of slice of life (only with an ongoing story), and also the human characters would be traditional hand drawn but the clayfighters are claymation animated, do you think that would be a good idea?

I played the SNES game and I gotta say nothing has ever quite rubbed me the wrong way like that game did. From the characters to the animations to that God awful, soul rending theme song, there is nothing worse to me than Clayfighter. I fucking hate that abomination with every fiber and atom of my being and I sincerely hope there is a special layer of hell dedicated solely to the creators.
