Is Nintendo 64 Emulation good on a Homebrew 3DS? In this gameplay video, I tested 10 different N64 games on my 3DS using the DaedalusX64 emulator. I played each game for around an hour and evaluated the performance, stability, and overall experience. While some games ran smoothly, others were plagued by crashes and slow speeds. I'll give you an honest overview of what the 3DS can and can't do when it comes to N64 emulation. fun fact: some guys actually deconstructed the mario 64 rom and game files to make it run natively on the 3ds, perfect framerate, perfect sound, and absolutely 0 crashes, doesn't even require an emulator to run and can be added straight to the home menu

yes finally though out of the video i was searching of him playing paper mario and found nothing and got disappointed at least am not the only one who really wants to play it on this console

SM64 isn't a must play for the emulator. SM64 already got multiple ports onto the 3ds and takes full advantage of the hardware

I agree. I installed a SM64 port in my N3DS that not only runs widescreen, but it also uses the 800px mode of the N3DS

it's impressive it even works at all, n64 is ridiculously hard to emulate, even vita can't do much at all... I tried to emulate n64 on a low power dual core AMD with 4GB DDR3 and it could not do it at all - it was like 5FPS at most.

It's about the settings on a PC, I had the same issue. You just need project64 and watch some videos settings for low-end PC's on KZfaq.

How were you not able to emulate it? I used to emulate it when I was 6 on my big brother's PC with a pentium 4 and like 1gb of RAM, no slow downs to speak of.

@@theofficialpollo linux... yeah thought so as well that somehow windows 98 could do it but linux is nowhere near as well optimised and I just installed a standalone linux based retro arch on a cheap micro PC

its cool to see sm64 run almost perfectly on this through emulation. but there's a port out there with widescreen, and 60fps out there. not sure if it's for new 3ds only.

"Runs almost perfectly" that might apply to nintendos own ports such as mario 64 and oot. But using daedalus is a different story. Its horrible and rmost games wont run more than 5 fps.

For mario 64, just use the 3ds portion new 3ds, or mario 64 ds and shoots mario 64 ds c pad patch for old 3ds

The remake to star fox 64 on the 3DS is way better than what you were emulating!! It has no sound hiccups and the graphics are extra crisp and it goes for the legend of Zelda also!

Yes, Star Fox 64 for 3ds looks better, I agree. I tried to play it a while back and didn't get much past the forced training mode. I hate when games think I am too stupid to play a 20 something year old game. I prefer the original on N64 because it doesn't insult my intelligence. Yes, the n64 version does have a tutorial, but it's during the first level, which is the better way to go, in my opinion. Also, the n64 had training mode but didn't force you to do it. If a player is having trouble, they can do the training mode if they want to by their own choice and not the game making them.

@@yubl10 Yeah I like to plan it on the Nintendo 64 better also! I beat it on the Nintendo 64 from the moment I started playing it to the very end. But the 3DS version of the game I kind of felt the same way

Do you think you'd get better results with the new 3ds xl ? Or is there no hardware improvement to do anything ?

No, I don't think so. The New 3DS and New 3DS XL both share the same CPU and technology. Only the screen sizes are different. I'd say it has more to do with the emulator itself than the tech it runs on. The PS1 emulator for example gets updated more frequently, therefore running surprisingly well!

It works for old 3DS but it runs at 2 FPS, on the never version it can run at 24 FPS

Even if n64 emulation isnt great, i dont think its really that big of a deal, the main games that 75% of people want are already on the 3ds, multiple versions of mario 64, both zelda games, and star fox, all remade or ported to take advantage of the hardware, theres obviously other great n64 games that weren't ported but again, these are the main games from the n64 that people want today and considering what else this little guy can do i think its enough, besides, emulation on the vita is really where its at

It also cannot run the snes emulators on retroarch. I've tried all 5 of them and they run the games in slow motion. I think this is more of a retroarch issue rather than the 3ds, because within retroarch the nes, genesis, and sega game gear emulators work really well.

@@HORRUS29 that sucks that it's not running them properly. That's the whole reason I sought out a 3ds so I'd be mad 🤦‍♂️ Maybe KZfaq the issue and you will likely find something. I learned how to mod 3ds and Wii from KZfaq. Usually they will provide you with a link of the written instructions too. Im sure the solution is pretty simple, maybe just delete the contents of your SD card and start over. If you need I can give you a couple KZfaqrs names that are really good at explaining what to do.

If you have a new 3DS, games can be run via injection using New Super Ultimate Injector. If you have an Old 3DS/3DSXL/2DS- stand alone emulators often work better on the 3DS than those that are part of RetroArch. Maybe try the standalone SNES9X emulator?

Because the new 3ds, new 3ds xl, and new 2ds xl have stronger hardware than the old 3ds, old 3ds xl, and 2ds.

Fun fact: DonkeyKong 64 wasn't even designed for the 8 MB expansion pak. It was designed for the 4 MB jumper pak, but the game used to crash and the crashes stopped when they tried it with the 8 MB expansion pak

Some 2D games can work on the old 3DS, but the rest is likely unplayble, yes.

It's true that N64 games are best played with an N64 controller 😄 Honestly, if you happen to have a 3DS lying around and like N64 games, it makes for a fine combination. Not with every game of course, but there are many cool ones that run well and are definitely worth a try.

Omg I know! One of the most nostalgic N64 games for me because me my mom dad and sister all played that one. In the video it looks like his is running pretty damn good, but on my N3DSXL no matter how I tweak Daedalus’ settings, I can’t get it to come out of that forever-slo-mo! 😩 So frustrating! Buuut I was super happy that Bomberman Hero worked perfectly! Me and my mom played that ish soo much when I was little. Lol that music slaps, just wish I could relive the Donkey Kong music hahah!

@@fedymunke8684If these n64 games were in a cia file format and weren't running in a crappy emulator it would run just as smooth as the original n64. The n64 isn't strong, the emulator is just weak. The 3ds is way more strong than the n64 and the gamecube.

I play DK64 on my New3DS, and it runs great. It does have slowdown, but only when saving and loading new areas, not during gameplay. Did you use the latest version, which is 1.0? And did you enable async audio? (It doesn't sound like you did.) And so you have the frame skip on either 1 or auto 2? And, finally, you didnt play it with the save states list visible? That slows down the emulator for some reason. Also, don't let it limit your FPS. I also note that disabling audio gets you like a 2.5x increase in FPS in every game I've tried. It seems that audio emulation is the real bottleneck. Most games I like having audio, but I do remember playing games while listening to CDs back in the real N64 days.
