8bitdo have released a PCB replacement mod kit for original N64 controllers, allowing you to get your old existing N64 controllers to work with modern devices such as the Nintendo Switch, PC, Android, and Raspberry Pi.
N64 Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) controllers have been in stock in the UK for a while now however, this is a handy alternative if they're out of stock in your region. It's also a way of giving life back to an old or broken N64 controller. It also doesn't have to be the boring grey colour either! N64 controllers were available in a variety of colours, so sprucing one up for use for your Switch can bring with it a sense of personality.
But is it any good? How does it compare to an NSO controller? Is it even worth it in the long run?
If it's up your street, you can order one here:

Out of curiosity, what's the stock like for N64 NSO controllers in your region? Stay safe ❤

Really thorough video, and a good take on the alternatives to the official controllers. I was lucky to get one of the official ones when they first came out but if I was into emulation more one of your suggestions would be ideal

I live in the states and usually it is out of stock but, I randomly checked their website one Thursday morning and they said I can order one. I do see quite a few being re-sold though around here, so I almost feel like the limited stock has something to do with scalpers coming in as well.

I got an n64 back in early December. My grandad got it for me when I rly wanted a game. Just the game, nothing else. But he still got the console as well. It has since become my favorite retro console

There's a controller test ROM for the N64 which shows the range of the analogue stick compared to the original. I'm interested in seeing how this new stick compares.

Yeah the N64's joystick is very accurate because it uses a optical sensor to see how far the joystick is moved instead of normal potentiometers so I'd like to see how a hall effect joystick would compare if at all.

IMHO the best N64 controller ever is the Superpad N64.

Great video buddy. I dont think I'll be butchering a gold N64 controller any time soon but at least i now know that there are things i can do to faulty pads if i get one. Good job.

Here in brazil, Nintendo have never released it, I had to buy it from Japan and use a deliveery proxy service that cost the double of the controller.

That's great, but can you use this to connect wirelessly to the n64? I know there are some dongles but I'm curious if this would work

There is a dongle available for roughly 30 quid iirc. I'm interested in trying it out myself.

I would be interested to see how it works with the N64 BlueRetro dongle by Retrotime. The NSO N64 controller works with it but it may suffer from a bit too much lag
@NordicDan

@@waynetemplar2183 I've been curious about just how much controller lag you end up with over a Bluetooth connection. I've only ever used corded controllers on my retro consoles but the idea of going wireless with a Bluetooth N64 controller sounded appealing. Not if the lag is too much though.

Have you tried using this mod on IOS devices (I.E IPad, IPhone, IPod Touch, etc)?

When playing on the switch with the mod kit, do all the C buttons work as they would on a regular N64 console?
@TheMultiGenGamer
@TheMultiGenGamer 7 ай бұрын
Certainly when playing N64 games, yes. The controller is recognised as an NSO N64 controller, so it behaves as such.

How do you close out the application with the controller?

You can press the button with the heart-shaped graphic on the rumble pak (second button from the right when holding it). It acts as the Home button on a regular joycon.

I'd like to get a hold of one of those bluetooth dongles you can get for N64, to allow it to use other bluetooth controllers. Once I do, I'll revisit this to see what its like with OG hardware.

If I snap a N64 controller stick I know what to do. Repurpose it for my PC.
