Asic's history dates all the way back to post World War II Japan. Which makes it one of the oldest footwear companies in the world. As some of you know already, the company was formerly known as Onitsuka Tiger (The company Phil Knight worked for before starting Nike) and was later named Asics. Asics & the Onitsuka make some of the most classic and finest sneakers in the world. Still to this day. In this video we cover the history of ASICS and discuss why the company's legacy is perhaps the most important of them all.

Asics/Onitsuka Tiger does have a very interesting history. And I think most people really don't realise how important Asics has been to the history of sports shoes, and sports shoe branding in general. The founder of Asics could be said to be the father of modern shoe culture. And if there were no Asics then there would probably be no Nike.

@@93SupaFly exactly. People forget that the founder of Nike got the idea for starting the company after visiting Japan, and the Onitsuka Tigers head office. Everything he saw and learnt is what inspired him to start Nike, and how to do it. It's truly the case that without Asics there probably would be no Nike.

Best to describe Onitsuka Tiger is their humility and timelessness. The classic Onitsuka sneakers are always designed with simplicity and bare necessity in mind. They fit so comfortably well and the Ortholite insoles on them are superb. Top story there.

I didn’t know anything about brands etc but it had those iconic tiger stripes. I managed to win some medals!

I read about Onitsuka in 'Shoe Dog'. But this video taught me 2 important things. 1. US-occupied Japan post WW2. 2. ASICS is actually a conglomerate of a number of companies. I knew Onitsuka was owned by ASICS but didn't know it was actually a 3-way merger. On a separate note, I absolutely love your videos. I think they are very well researched and you present it really well. Big fan, all the way from India.

I'm glad you guys finally got around to doing some history on Tigers and Asics, they happen to be one of my favorite brands, and in particular, I own like 4-6 pairs ranging from the Ultimate 81's, Tai Chi, and Mexico 66's. The leather quality on the 66's is impressive, granted they tend to sell a bit more than most Nike's but it's really soft, supple, and overall well made but not suggested for people with really wide feet or someone who might be more heavy set since they offer almost no padding or cushion. Also quite true to size and since the leather is soft will expand so order for a more snug fit knowing they'll ease up. Love to see a video about Puma and the speed cat series and variations, I used to see some sick stuff from them like 15-20 years back

This video is full of interesting and informative details of history. What I found most interesting is the backstory of the split-toe construction. Brands like Reebok, Maison Margiela, and Nike don't even bother to go in-depth behind it to tell the full history, so like you, I thought it was something new as well. Really dope to know that the construction dated back to the 15th century. ASICS is a brand that should get more love naturally, and not just when someone does a collaboration with them. I hope they continue to dig into the archives and revive more running/lifestyle models from the late 90s and 2000s. I love the GEL-Kayano 5 OGs. Have a few pair in the closet and one that I wear on the regular.

I recieved a pair of Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 SD today, they sadly disappointed me. I've mainly been a converse guy and rocked Adidas for a year and a half. I wanted Onitsukas because of Bruce Lee and how iconic the line design is. But main even paying for the "Super Deluxe" the shows are only a leather outer. I figured it'd be a decent thickness and a thin lining but it's just thin leather. The laces that are on the deluxe are such a crappy feel. The Mexico 66s walking feel like they'd get destroyed in a few weeks unless you were careful when wearing them. I really wanted to like this shoe but it doesn't meet what most people would want atleast to me. Maybe the Serrano or 81 model would be nice but the biggest problem is they also dont have any in stock with the color you want in "your" size. I was stuck with either the black and white striped Mexico 66s or yellow and black deluxe. I picked the yellow ones cause of Bruce and now I need to ship them back. No store stock any Onitsuka shows. Just more modern asics. Not trying to trash and get all angry just wanted to let others know what the shoes will be before you buy. All the vids I saw were mostly positive but didn't bring up any of the details I found when I got the shoes.

Was it the Nippon-Made version by any chance? Cuz those versions are completely handcrafted straight from Japan. I think the Deluxe models are made down in SE Asia territories.

Hey Brian great video. Not to be a douche but Uma Thurman wore the Tai Chi’s in Kill Bill. They were a custom version that sported the words fuck you on the sole. They were limited edition shoes and are really hard to find. ASICS re-released them naturally as per clout generated by the movie, but they aren’t exactly the same. Regardless great video and the Mexico 66 is a bitchin shoe!

Those two shoes shown at 2:20 actually was a design that stuck and was popular with runners for years. The first one looks like the 1960 Magic Runner or maybe a 1958 Marup. Compare the sole at (2:20) to the ones on the nylon Marathon (4:15) that came out in 1966. Tiger developed racing and training shoes using versions of the Marup sole and four running shoes utilized it in 1968. The white leather Tiger Road Runner and split leather Bangkok were trainer/racers that had added cushioning layers. The nylon Marathon and cotton-leather Cub were the pure racing shoes. Bill Bowerman didn't like the Road Runner/Bangkok trainer, but a lot of runners who needed a wider toebox preferred them over Bowerman's pointy-toed Cortez. The Marathon remained a top racing shoe well into the 70s at least. The 1981 redesigned Marathon was the first shoe of the SORTIE line, which succeeded the MARUP line.

Nice video, well made and good effort on the research. These days, asics and Onitsuka Tiger are run as separate companies. Onitsuka Tiger shoes are absolutely legendary. Every shoe was designed for a purpose and we're revolutionary for their time. These days, they are here to honour that heritage and show off the Japanese craftsmanship in their Nippon Made line. There is also a new sub brand of Onitsuka Tiger entering the market simply named "The Onitsuka" it's a more contemporary / luxury take on sneakers but no doubt will start to make moves outside of Japan in the coming years 🤘
@Sabundy
@Sabundy 2 жыл бұрын
but aren't they still run under the same umbrella of the ASICS company? If you check out their corporate reports, financial reports etc...(all of which are public and freely available for download) there appears to be separation between Asics and Onitsuka Tiger at all
@goosebumps2048
@goosebumps2048 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sabundy Hello, Yes that is correct in terms of being under the same umbrella. However the businesses are run seperately with seperate head offices etc. Have you heard of the brand Haglofs? That is also under the Asics umbrella.
