At 5:20 we called the Air Jordan 1 the Air Force 1 - big mistake! But did you know that MJ was actually wearing Nike Air Ships in 1985 and those were banned, not the Air Jordans? Just trying to restore my sneaker reputation 🤓. Thanks for all the feedback! Subscribe to our channel if you don't wanna miss more videos like this one. From this video essay, Nike seems to be run more like a tech company vs a athletic brand.
@AthleticInterest

Yes and I think that's the direction Nike is heading. Their new CEO John Donahoe was CEO of Ebay and ServiceNow before, so he comes from the tech industry. That's quite unusual for Nike, normally they promote from their own roster of talents and bet on managers with athletic background instead of hiring from outside.

That's just one part of the story. The second is Ronaldo (the Brazilian striker). I remember growing up in Europe as a kid in the 80's and 90's playing football. Wearing Nike's was not done. Nike wasn't a football brand and if you showed up with Nike's u was considered lame and dumb. It were cool sneaker u would wear to school under your Levi pants, not football shoes. Once Nike contracted Ronaldo this changed and this gave Nike a footstep into the biggest sport in the world, football.

NAH. Ronaldo Nazario is the most gifted footballer ever even more than Messi or CR but he's not close to either one of them. Sadly he was too inconsistent and too injury prone to have a stellar career which was at its peak >24 years of age. That's simply the truth!

Great video quality and content. One of the other reasons for Nike's original success is because they were one of the first companies to start using super cheap labour overseas. I know that when I had a couple pairs of Nikes when I was in high school (35 years ago), they were made in Indonesia.I know that I saw a program years and years ago that Nike was accused of going so far as to employ children in his factories. That practice may not have been illegal in Indonesia at the time, but it was shunned the rest of the world over. I stopped buying Nikes 30 years ago, after seeing that program.

Not sure how I missed this video. Keep up the good work! One part you didn't cover is their hype beast models and or street wear. That's a massive driving factor in many ways for Nike. The limited drops, even manufacturing more but holding them back not selling them to create hype. People finding limited drops years later at outlets after they sold out and selling on stock X for over retail and so on.

The reason NIke is winning at the minute is that their online retail operation has been superb since the strategy change 2017. I could order a pair of Vaporflys from Nike UK today and they would be on my doorstep by Thursday evening/Friday morning all the way from Belgium. Even the customised By You range has an insanely short lead time. I bought a pair of Flyknit Lunar 3s in 2018 in my own custom colourway and they had reached me from the manufacturing facility in China in just over a week.

Nike learned their lesson when Michael Jordan was about to leave them for another brand after the bad performance on court by Air Jordan II. Thankfully Nike had Tinker Hatfield (another Oregon college athlete) in their designer team and he worked close with MJ in the creation of Air Jordan III. If Jordan left Nike in 1987, I think Nike would be equally known as Asics today.

This is too much about “just Nike”. The documentary lacks the comparison with adidas, ASICS, New Balance, Puma, Reebok etc. Other companies had great innovations, big superstars and usually a much older tradition and experience. So, why or how could Nike become so dominant?

It's simple. Nike is marketing everyone and everything and it's working. And they know it. And they expoit it.
