Classics are shows that will last for a long time and that contextualized certain aspects of anime to this day. But Nadia: Secret of Blue Water is a special case where it has the makings of a classic but not really.

Well, Shinji's head design is basically a masculinized Nadia. Take Nadia's head, change her hairstyle to something much more boyish, lighten her skintone and you get Shinji's head.

I live in Saudi Arabia and I was born in 1990 and Anime being dubbed for both grownups and children I ended up seeing this when I was 5 or 6 on TV and watched every episode of it with my friends and cousins. It was one of the best anime I ever saw and still remember till this day it touched my heart even as a kid it has something "surreal" about it and the good thing whoever dubbed it for us didn't water it down to fit kids only or cut any scenes so I got to watch it as it intended to be as a kid and man the raw emotions I got from it and it has depth I still remember the last episode and how gory it looked for me as a kid and I didn't get too scared or hate it in fact it was a window to the real world and how unjust and gory it could be plus in the 90s in middle east we already experienced wars like the gulf war with Iraq so it felt like a time where we had to grow faster than other generations in this region. This show has a great story and atmosphere I ended up buying an expensive original dubbed VHS collection that came from the company that dubbed it and it was a blue VHS that I still own it till this day and growing up I had to search for it in the original audio and ended up buying it HD translated to English. To put it simply this show shapes my childhood and my early memories not of myself only but of life and how messy it could get and how happy it might be too. Shout out to all the 90s kids and whoever ended up watching this gem and loving it and experience the same feelings.

haha I'm 90s kid(born in 1987) and just watched last episode today, I just started watching the entire series in autumn 2022, quite late(better late than never I guess), we never have that show on tv. Yeah last episode was glorious, felt sad for Nadia's brother

If I recall correctly, Nadia was originally planned for 26 episodes and somewhere around episode 20 NHK told them to extend it to 39 episodes because it was doing well with ratings. 1-22 and 35-39 are the episodes that Anno were involved in, most likely working on 35-39 while the filler was being outsourced. Always tragic when executive meddling hinders talent. Same thing happened with Kare Kano, Anno famously leaving the production due to the manga author not liking how it was being adapted. Not even surprised that he has only worked on movies (nothing but live action stuff which are great, and the rebuilds) since then, he has a lot more freedom to do what he wants. I really do hope after the final Rebuild movie drops, Anno and Tsurumaki Anno's (understudy who directed FLCL and Diebuster) work on more tv anime again but I have my doubts.

I have a hunch that while episodes 30 and 31 may not have been directed by Anno, they were most likely part of the original pitch of the show. Especially given that Red Noah plays such an important part in the show's final five episodes. I actually think that episodes 30 and 31 hold up quite well in spite of their awkward placement and aren't just important to watch for story related reasons, but are very much integral to Nadia and Jean's growth as characters. I personally believe 30 and 31 had the misfortune of being in production right as the show was forced to artificially extend it's length and were thus stuck in between two terrible arcs. I go back and forth on the Island Arc (episodes 23-29). It kinda varies in quality pretty heavily from episode to episode, jumping from mediocre and dry, to occasionally almost feeling of the same quality of the rest of the series (almost), to absolutely terrible, to at times almost so bad it's good. It's pretty obvious that the kids were supposed to spend at least a few episodes on the islands in the original draft as there's just too many minor but plot/continuity crucial elements buried through this dud stretch of the series. This stretch of the series was clearly the unfortunate victim of being padded out longer than the writers could handle. I ultimately can't in good faith recommend people skip out on this stretch of episodes in spite of its at times abysmal quality due to it containing just too many small elements that crucial to the plot (including flashbacks to Nadia's childhood, brief sequences of Neo Atlantis, showing how the kids and the Grandis gang reunite, etc.). The Africa Arc (episodes 32-34) on the other hand are actually unwatchable and are some of the worst anime episodes I've ever seen. Thankfully there's basically zero continuity or plot critical scenes in these episodes and they're 100% skippable.

I wish this one would get a remake like Evangelion did. This story and the characters in it deserve a proper retelling the way Anno had intended it. Plus I'd love to see a modern studio take a crack at the action in it.

Treasure Planet in particular might have suffered from execs tugging strings in order to make it bomb "just enough" to justify them canning the 2D animation department completely. The marketing for both was iffy at best from what I remember and it stands to reason this was done intentionally by those up top wanting to move completely to 3D and cut the 2D department loose...despite 2D being able to do amazing stuff when paired with 3D as Ufotable has proven.

Nadia is one of my favorite animes! I discovered it when browsing hidive and fell in love instantly. I didn’t realize the same creator for Evangelian spearheaded this, but looking back, its all too clear, what with the ideas of the creation of humans, risk of annihilation and epic space drama. Gotta say how unfortunate tho the showrunner suffered such depression from both projects

The hatred for the island/africa episodes is way overblown in my opinion. I actually liked a decent amount of it (not as much as the rest of the show, of course). There was still a fair amount of fun character moments throughout, particularly with Jean. Even the music episode was alright, I can admit to listening to several of the songs again after i finished the series. Overall, that string of episodes came across to me as trying to make lemonade out of a lemon. Sometimes it was sour, but it was also sweet in places. Though I will say the episode where they find Ayerton & Nadia's sudden crush on Hamahama are indeed terrible.

Other then that I also think that section of episodes was kind of nessecary after ep 22 where they split off form the Nautilus. That point is impactful cause we don't know what happened to Nemo and the rest and since 6 months chronollogically pass between that and the finale it makes sense ot dedicate several episodes to fill in this gap timeline wise. Imagine if you take away the island arc and the rest of the filler, now your left with a situation where the crew reunite with the Nautilus gang like 3 episodes after their goodbye it would feel less impactful. Like it or not filler is sometimes nessecary, had Anno remained the director he likely would have made a far better job but I don't really see the problem that most others do.

Oh man, these Island episodes... wow. They feel in general like a trip. But it goes COMPLETELY bonkers when they are running away from that monster in the beginning of episode 28. This really seemed like a LSD experience. "Haha, look how fast we can run!" And all of a sudden the other character says:"Look what I can even do!" And jumps like 100000 meters in the air." This all came just out of nowhere! Anyway, if you can skip most of the horrible island episodes - it's a really decent anime!

If you watch this show, do not, I repeat, DO NOT watch episodes 32-34. Episodes 23-31 are bad and nowhere near the level of the first 22 (bar maybe episode 31) but they have a few nice moments and they are watchable. Episodes 32-34 genuinely RUIN the series. The character of Nadia is essentially assassinated and considering the island arc already made her borderline insufferable, this arc makes her genuinely irredeemable! For your own good skip these 3 episodes!

episodes 32-33 are singlehandly the worst of the series. No contest. 34 is inoffensive, mostly just an in-house amv compilation with original music. 23-27 are a mixed bag of good and bad stuff. Could easily be like 2 or 3 episodes tops if trimmed down. 28-29 just need to be trimmed down to one episode.

I didn’t think that island arc was bad at all. I think the only part I didn’t like was when the Captain slapped Nadia, not that she was right to mouth off like that, but still I don’t like the idea of using violence to discipline a kid. Besides I didn’t think Nemo was harsh with Jean at all, he was pretty calm and Jean took it like a man. There are just 2 things I wish they added 1. When Nadia hugs Jean when he finds her, they didn’t acknowledge she was naked at the time. I was hoping when she did, Jean looks down at her body and then when he hands her clothes to her she freaks out when she realizes she is naked. 2. I wish Marie explained where she ended up when everyone went their separate ways and how she and Sanson ended up together because that one is a one head scratcher. My best theory is she was taken in by Jean’s Aunt and Uncle and then when she is about 12, she comforts Sanson when seeing how depressed he is over still being single and to cheer him, she playfully tells him that if he still doesn’t have anyone in 5 years, she will agree to marry him if he asks. He probably laughs at the idea as he believes he is not that desperate, but after 5 years and seeing how much Marie has grown he comes to the realization that he IS that desperate and… well I’m sure we can all guess what happened. Wedding bells.

There's a lot of older guy/younger girl romance in Japanese media of that time, I just think after Sanson saved Marie from the Gargoyle robot thingy and she fell ill, he bonded with her as a senpai figure, and it developed into something more when she grew up. Yeah, it's maybe weird and a bit creepy to us westerners, but in the 80s/90s it was more acceptable in Japan. I too don't hate the island arc either, though it is the weakest part of the series, I think Nadia regressing and yo-yoing in regards to Jean is pretty natural for a girl her age and in the situation she's been in, she doesn't know how to process "healthy/positive" feelings so she falls back on old, bad familiar habits as a coping mechanism.

@@user-ow1jb7wg8u Funny enough I think Sanson and Marie make a cute couple. I’m more against older women and younger guy couples. Being raised by a single mom for a chunk of my life, it just irks me. Which is funny because Walt Disney and Jim Henson, who i have both always admired, were younger than their wives and died before them.

There was a fan edit made in 2020 in order to convert the 39 episodes to three movies, celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the series. The fan edit worked on removing unneeded fillers and more. Island Arc was treated in an interesting way as well, which made this show flawless finally. Here is the trailer for the trilogy: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nM1kpqapsLvcXWw.html
