Thanks very much, Trevor, for taking the time to share this excellent tutorial. My brother-in-law's CR2A had stopped working and I was having a devil of a time tracking down the problem. It had the same transport issues yours had and after following your steps and cleaning and lubricating the motor and worm gear, it's now working again. Great video.

Thank you SO much, i just performed the cam motor cleaning and relubrication on my nakamichi CR-1A after dealing with it only playing like 2% of the time for over a year. I was worried at first but your excellent footage and clear explanations of what you were doing and really made this repair possible for me. It works like it's brand new, i'm so happy to have my cassette player working again

Thank a lot, My CR-2E (from 1989) did not start playing, though Fast forward and Rewind did work OK. The lift returned to initial position after 2 tries. Just pushing the contacts a couple of times solved the issue. I only had to pull back the whole block, after releasing the ground connnection. Your video helped a lot and saved it from the scrapyard. Plays wonderful again. THis was my first investment in high-end HiFi

Excellent photography Trevor, no silly zooming in and out. There's so many little things that can go wrong with old decks - it's often a long chain of one repair/mod after another, but we often do get there!!! I don't know about you, but I can spend 10, 20, 30, 40 hours and more on one deck alone - repair or rebuild can be a process of one step forward, followed by one and a half backwards! ;o) Regards and thanks for the video.

Yeah, decks are not my favorite things to fix. So many details to keep straight in the head. Miss a step and I have to disassemble half way to correct it. Parts are hard to get or impossible. When done they all sound mediocre to me. Thanks

27:27 - I think you certainly know that usually in almost all motors of this type, there are on the outside of this white plastic piece, two holes where a thin wire must be inserted in each one in order to move the brushes away from the center of the shaft, allowing you to install the armature without the collector interfering with the brushes. That's the easy way but I don't know if this motor has those holes. 58:07 - This motor is diferente it has justo one ripped hole that serves to separate the two brushes from the motor. Thanks for the nice video.

What a quality build nakamichi made in those days. I had the one that automatically could turn the cassette. Also transformers build in if there was a new cassette deck made I bet they used switching pcb instead of transformers. Much cheaper but crapy powersupply.

1:04:30 Van Halen!!! :) Pity you didn't show the last test you mentioned. Could you suggest me a grease for plastic gears of dvd-bluray player especially for the bars where the laser head glides and a more viscous for opening mechanism? I guess the former is the same you used for motor shafts and bearings. thank you

Thanks for this video: I’m about to do the same on a Cassette Deck 2 but I haven’t marked the cam gear position before I’ve tested with low voltage to check if working. How do we know the cam gear position? Only doc I could find was for a BX-2 which I hope is the same for the CD2 but can’t figure out if Cam0 should be the inside or outside mech facing.

Wonderful video! I was wondering how the W&F was with the new belt? I have 2 CR-1s, and one just developed the same problem which brought me here. Thanks for taking the time!
@TrevorsBench
@TrevorsBench 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I have no way to measure W&F but my tuned ear meters tells me it improved a bit. Old belts will harden and have a memory from sitting in one spot for years and develop a kink that will be noticeable when playing tapes
@w2ctm0
@w2ctm0 2 жыл бұрын
@@TrevorsBench Thanks for the reply. I have a friend whose a tech, and has a W&F meter, but I'm very sensitive to bad W&F, and can usually tell listening to a pre-recorded cassette with piano music. The reason I asked, is because with Nakamichi decks I've read that some of the replacement belts available today don't perform to the original factory specs. I guess It doesn't really matter if it's not noticeable to the listener.

Go to Aliexpress and search for mini DC motor. You'll find lots of variations for small motors. You should be able to find one that fits

There is a tiny hole at the back of the motors right in the middle of the motor cover. can you lub the back bearing from there?
@TrevorsBench

No, don't all oil there. The hole is access for the speed adjustment
@1873Winchester
@1873Winchester 2 жыл бұрын
I don't understand the speed test with the oscilloscope? If I got you right, you fed a 3khz signal to the deck, recorded and replayed it. Then you tuned the speed? But if you fed it a 3khz signal and recorded it on a tape going slightly too fast, wouldn't that still play it back as 3khz? I thought that's why people use commercial tuning tapes where the cassettes tuning signal was recorded on a calibrated deck according to an industry standard. Or am I missing sometihng? I'd be glad if you could clear up my confusion
@TrevorsBench
@TrevorsBench 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I bought the 3Khz speed tape and I'm trusting it was recorded on a good deck, sorry I always forget to mention that part. You're right, if I recorded the test tones they would be inaccurate
