I built a set of four of these chairs...bar stool height (if you do this, be sure you are ok with having a foot rail or your feet will just hang there in the air....being left swinging, as it were) I sourced the wood from raw walnut slabs, surfaced them with hand planes. I used a band saw to rough out the parts, but hand tools for everything else. The spindles on a spoon mule attachment on my saw bench, with a draw knife and spoke shave. The joinery turned out well, though I did need to use Epoxy instead of Tightbond. I still do not understand the seat to leg joint, it seemed no matter what I did, I never got a clean joint off the saw, though they cleaned up paring with a very sharp chisel. It was a great project for me, well over this 'experienced beginner's skill set....but the stretch did me a lot of good. I'm now considering a Nakashima type trestle table and a set of Sam Metloof type carved chairs from a stack of Koa a friend gave me. Big job....but the Koa demands something special. If you are reading this, know you can say you can or can not about almost anything...and either way you will be right. -Veteran '66-68
