Lampang, also known as Nakhon Lampang, is the third largest city in northern Thailand and the capital of Lampang province. Traditional names for Lampang include Wiang Lakon and Khelang Nakhon. The city serves as a commercial and transportation hub. Lampang is located 601 km north of Bangkok and 101 km southeast of Chiang Mai.
Lampang is a popular destination for travelers seeking to experience authentic local culture, traditional Thai cuisine, and the beautiful landscapes of northern Thailand. Situated in a picturesque region, Lampang offers a unique experience for tourists looking to explore the history and culture of this region of Thailand. Lampang is renowned for its festivals, including the famous Songkran and Loy Krathong. The city provides tourists with the opportunity to immerse themselves in authentic Thai culture and history.
The celebration of Songkran in Lampang typically spans several days. It begins with a cleansing ritual where people pour water over each other to wash away sins and welcome the new year. Throughout the days, people engage in water fights on the streets, using buckets, hoses, and anything else that can be used for splashing. Traditional ceremonies in temples, parades, cultural events, music, and dances are also held. Songkran is a time for joyful gatherings, fun, and respect for Thailand's traditions and culture.
Tourists in Lampang visit popular attractions such as Wat Phra That Lampang Luang Temple and the Thai Elephant Conservation Center, then continue north to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. Lesser-known tourist spots in Lampang are often frequented by locals. Some of these spots include Wang Kao Waterfall and Chae Son National Park, a compact park that combines a natural hot spring with large waterfalls.
Lampang is renowned for its historical temples, beautiful nature, and cultural heritage. The city boasts numerous ancient temples and monasteries, such as Wat Phra That Lampang Luang Temple and Wat Chalae. The city is also known for its unique wooden houses that represent traditional Northern Thai architecture. Lampang is also famous for its horse-drawn carriages, introduced in 1916 and still popular among tourists.
Many temples in central Lampang were built in the Burmese style. Some preserved examples include Wat Si Bun Rueang, Wat Si Chum, and Wat Pa Fang. Nine out of the remaining 31 Burmese temples in Thailand are located in Lampang. Traditional Lanna architecture can be found at Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, situated at the site of the ancient city of Lampang. It is known for its 19th-century frescoes. The city emblem features a white cock at the temple gate.
