Yes, peaceful neighbor that ethnic cleansed its own people during 1990s. Bhutan's population does not even exceed 800,000 currently. This is the country that created 100,000 refugees in 1990s. Since it is a small country, world has overlooked its ethnic cleansing act, sadly.

Too bad they are "isolated" because they stripped more than 100,000 minorities of citizenship (who had been citizens for decades), then deported them, effectively making them stateless and screwed refugees. Isn't insular racism awesome? Not "insular racism", I mean "cultural preservation".

"It's not that developed" -- What do you consider development? I consider Bhutan as the most developed. It's the mental development and human development that matters rest is all changing. Glitzy Buildings won't last a few decades but the virtues last thousands of years. What you have there is a wonderful culture that teaches co-existence with Nature and all other species. That's what i call development. Country having Happiness Index of its citizen as its fundamental, is what deserves the right to call itself as civilized and developed. Everything else does not matter. Be proud for being a citizen of the Most Developed Country in the World!! I bow down to your Culture, Leaders, and People for understanding the very aspect of existence and life. Thank you Bhutan !! I wish India has such neighbors all around.

I was so fortunate to be able to visit Bhutan in 1977. There was no airport, so I sent by land. There were very few roads. I was teaching and coaching basketball in a school in India, in the Himalayas. We were guests of the king and played 3 exhibition matches against the king and his bodyguards. He was very fond of basketball. I fell in love with the country and its people and have since visited 3 more times. My wife even has been another 3 times, once accompanied by 28 friends and another time with 15.

I was traveling/trekking in Bhutan and Nepal in the 90's... It completely changed my perspective on life. Buddhism isn´t my personal religion, I believe more in nature, evolution and our universe, but when I first came in contact with Buddhism I was really fascinated and I still practice some meditations that I have learned in a Buddhist monastery to relax my mind. The people of Bhutan and also much of Nepal and Tibet are an excellent example for the future, AWAY from the extreme materialism and selfishness (egoism) of our modern western society, they are perfectly integrated into the bio-systems of our planet and PEACEFUL with an eternity of smiles on their faces, absolutely exemplary!

@@Alexandra.Symone In the annals of Bhutan's history, a challenging chapter stands out - a period when the kingdom found itself compelled to implement drastic measures to protect its sovereignty. This phase unfolded against the backdrop of political unrest caused by the presence of Nepali refugees seeking their own separate land. To safeguard its nation, Bhutan reluctantly resorted to implementing a "one nation, one people" policy, which eventually led to a series of unfortunate events, culminating in the Nepali refugees being asked to leave the country. Bhutan, known for its unique cultural identity and commitment to preserving its traditional values, had long embraced an open-door policy, welcoming Nepali refugees fleeing political instability in neighboring Nepal. Initially, these refugees were granted asylum and allowed to reside in Bhutan, creating a harmonious coexistence. However, over time, tensions arose as some Nepali refugees began demanding a separate territory, defying Bhutan's principle of a united nation. Recognizing that the demands for a separate land threatened Bhutan's very foundation, the government reluctantly took a decisive step to implement a policy aimed at ensuring unity and national integrity. The "one nation, one people" policy was introduced with the intention of upholding Bhutanese sovereignty and preserving its unique cultural heritage. Regrettably, a portion of the Nepali refugee population refused to comply with this policy, leading to protests and escalating tensions. Bhutan's leadership, confronted with a grave dilemma, faced the agonizing choice of either compromising its sovereignty or taking measures to maintain its cultural integrity and national unity. The decision to ask those who opposed the policy to leave the country was undoubtedly a difficult one, as it resulted in a humanitarian crisis. The departure of the Nepali refugees marked a painful chapter in Bhutan's history, impacting both the lives of those who had sought refuge and the Bhutanese people who had once welcomed them. During these tumultuous times, it is important to acknowledge that the world was facing numerous conflicts and territorial disputes. Many countries found themselves grappling with similar challenges as they strived to protect their own national interests amidst global turmoil. The Bhutanese crisis unfolded against a backdrop of shifting international alliances, armed conflicts, and the unsettling specter of countries invading others. These external factors undoubtedly exerted additional pressure on Bhutan, further complicating an already challenging situation. While the events surrounding Bhutan's decision may evoke a sense of unease and raise questions about the means employed, it is essential to view this chapter in its historical context. The Bhutanese people and their leaders were confronted with an arduous task of safeguarding their nation's sovereignty while grappling with internal divisions and external uncertainties. In the present day, Bhutan continues to evolve, focusing on reconciliation and building a harmonious society. Lessons learned from the past inform the nation's commitment to inclusive policies, respect for human rights, and a multicultural ethos that embraces diversity. The memory of the crisis serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance nations often face when preserving their sovereignty in an ever-changing world.

Watching this video and reading few dozens comments to it made me realize: vast majority of people who did not live in Bhutan - have no idea what's going on. What this video demonstrates - is merely a deck of tourist attractions. While reality - is this: young people make up the majority of Bhutan and, among many of them, there's a collective feeling of hopelessness. This is well described by Kinley Phuntsho, a visually impaired freelance writer and creative in Bhutan. He said - i quote from ABC News publication made Tue 4 Jul 2023 at 10:39pm: "I don't think anyone knows exactly how the future is going to go, but for me, I'm kind of scared because I'm not just living for myself, I recently got married, ... The main reason I think a lot of people are leaving is because they don't think that they have the ability or the opportunity to live a satisfied, content life in Bhutan and they feel that they need to be abroad to get that. It's hand to mouth existence … so I want to create a situation where I can thrive, and in order for that to happen, I'm looking to leave.". The same publication also mentions hard numbers which are impossible to ignore - quote: "Since June last year, 1.4 per cent of Bhutan's population has been granted a visa to go to Australia - a huge proportion that's growing, in a country of just 760,000 people". At this pace, half of the country's population would leave in merely 36 years, if it'd be the same number of people leaving every year; but currently, the process is accelerating, so it'd happen even much sooner. Perhaps in 20 years or even sooner. This is not to blame anyone or anything - this is merely to inform anyone who's reading this comment: maybe Bhutan _was_ the happiest country in the world in the past, but today, after many enough years of internet, radio and TV availability, people of Bhutan are not happiest nation on Earth anymore. Otherwise, why would they leave in such great numbers? As for why i think the above is important information - it's simple: whomever is considering to visit or even immigrate to Bhutan - would get much better result (or possibly, even avoid doing a big mistake) by timely understanding of the reality described above. P.S. People can both lead a hard life and be happy in the same time, and this was the case for most people in Bhutan for generations, in the past - but this is only possible when people do not know, do not see, do not read about much easier and less-hardship life styles practiced by people elsewhere. As soon as they do - and un Bhutan, they now do via all the internet, TV and such - it is inevitable that they start to wish for less-difficult life style. Which is impossible to provide to everyone in Bhutan for objective reasons: difficult terrain, major obstacles to high-profit industrial development from traditions, laws and small size of the country, severely limiting scale of any industrial projects, difficult land-locked, only two neighbouring countries position of the country (and both are developing industrial giants unkind to any potential competition), and many other reasons. This is why noone is to blame; it's just unfortunate combination of factors which makes it impossible to any rapidly develop "easy" life style for everyone in Bhutan. Yet there is also one good thing in all this: namely, the cleaning of this small but old nation. Those with desires to exploit others, to lead easiest life at expense of others, to do business dirtiest yet most profitable way possible - these people are leaving Bhutan before any others. I say, this mountain country and its people - have a rare chance: to indeed save their very special traditions, spirit and pure intentions, if after few decades the only people who'd say - are ones not greedy, not seeking easy life, ones truly devoted to Nature and to other people. This is not worst of fates indeed. Far not worst.

Buddhism enter bhutan last in most of east asia and came from tibetan buddhism(which is a new school of buddhism mixed with native Bon religion). It is actually very far from the buddhism of the first buddha. The closest version is extinct and was in Afghsnistan and was killed off during the islamic invasion of the area in the 9th-11century ad. The closest now is probably in Sri Lanka.. fun fact: the reason buddhsim enter tibet n bhutan last amonst asian nations even though it is the closest east asian/south east asian nation to India is because of the massive mountain ranges that separate it from india making travel very hard despite being literally next door.
