After finishing a little bag in Dalarna stitch, I decided to try the same technique.
In this video, I cover how I decided to try this, how to make plarn, and pros/cons/things I'd do differently when nalbinding with plarn. Feel free to ask any questions-I know some of this raises more questions than it answers!

Coming from Viking reenactment I applaud you for taking an old craft and making it both modern an enviromentally conscious.

Oh yeah-I really enjoy all the things you can do with plastic bags! Have you seen my "plarn time" playlist? All sorts of ideas and experiments to see what can be made from plastic bags! (I've got a coiled basket in there too)

I just taught myself to crochet so that I could work with plarn. I’ve made a small basket so far that I am using as a plant holder. It will take some time for me to regulate my tension enough to do a bag, I think. I’ve started on my second basket, and I’m using the join as you work method so that I can switch colors easily. Thanks for the inspiration to maybe try another method.

There are so many ways to work with plarn! This technique was my intro to new techniques, (I also started in crochet) but I've been trying even more. If you haven't seen it yet, check out my "Plarn Time" playlist for other ideas--I add to it ever couple of months with new techniques I'm trying out! kzfaq.info/sun/PLGzkNlVtXX7p1wInZlMFN4kjl96acJWKO&si=Nxr3zqYQJKQyoZCg

Sitting here eating a California Burrito and saw this... anytime I see someone recycling plastic this way I appreciate them! Living in Cali plastic bags have been being phased out, if you go to any of the beaches they just wash up often. This is a really cool concept. Could make christmas stockings out of this lol Pretty creative, man! I dig it!

I joined some of the plarn I made by cutting the loops of the bag, making a single strip, then joining the ends. I do that by placing them under a piece of parchment and fusing with an iron set on a low temp. It took a little experimenting to find the right iron setting.

Have you ever tried the single strand plarn? It is basically cutting bag in a spiral. I much prefer it for crocheting plarn. Have not tried it with nalbinding as yet
@jeffandthings77
@jeffandthings77 2 ай бұрын
I have not. The biggest reason is that I love the "bulky" nature of the loop based plarn which lets the knots hide...I'm sort of afraid that the knots would be more apparent when connecting single strands of plarn. But that could be worth trying out!

I've made a few beanies out of plarn and they're decently thick and warm if you use a wider stitch for the generally bulkier plarn.
@jeffandthings77
@jeffandthings77 2 жыл бұрын
The first I've heard of that! How comfortable were they?
@Ensensu2
@Ensensu2 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffandthings77 They were decently comfortable too, they just need a somewhat loose stitch, like the york stitch, but I have no idea how durable they can be.
@Ensensu2
@Ensensu2 Жыл бұрын
As for durability, especially in adverse conditions. A plarn bowl I nalbound for storing steel scraps has survived several years now just sitting out in the garage, just being a bowl. So plarn's decently durable as a fabric.
