Wonderful - a Sunday treat. "Everyone acting like they're in a library" 🤣🤣🤣 So true. Agree about Butterbrez'n, though: When they're fresh they're awesome, when they're even a little stale they're terrible. I'm happy with them about 30% of the time in Munich, but the quest goes on!

when i see that steep path, all i can think about is one school retreat where they cheaped out on a gondola ticket for one student in a wheelchair, so we had to take turns holding on to him so he wouldnt pace down the mountain at 50km/h. Great times, horrible school, but great times.

Hey NALF, if you are interested in good Brezeln you should look for some with thin arms and a fluffy bow/arch. Brezeln with thicker arms (and salt on the arms) are bavarian style Brezeln, which are usually "breadier" aka not as soft because they dont use as much butter as the swabians, but more important, they are the go to industrial Brezel. So if you find Brezeln with thicker arms and salt everywhere in Baden-Württemberg, they are often from a factory somewhere else. Brezeln with thin and crispy arms and a fluffy arch are the swabian/baden style and a sign for Brezeln made at least in the region.

I feel like I and the people around me just always talk in about the same volume, no matter where we are. Apparently that volume is fairly low compared to people in other countries? It's not like we are consciously trying to be quiet; there's just no reason to be loud, so why be loud?

I'm from Heidelberg and now live in Cincinnati. There's a little bakery window right across from Douglas on Hauptstrasse, near Bismarckplatz - I think it's called Dietsch. They have warm pretzels, freshly made. My mouth waters just thinking about them! I hope you find a good Bretzel for your brother - Laugengebaeck is among the things I miss the most about Germany!

Yeah, but you can’t eat the Butterbrezl after the Döner! The flavours can’t compete. I think this is going to be a thing. We have to find the Brezel that will convince Mikey… I love Heidelberg! I got engaged at the castle, I study at the university and now I live by the town where Ottheinrich is from (he opened the library and built in Heidelberg). His is my local castle. Love that you went to HD first! Well done. About the Butterbrezel. It’s hard hard to find a really really good one. At my old company the staff would have Butterbrezel tastings each year for the annual shareholder meeting. They would get Brezeln from five or six local bakeries and have us top floor staff taste and rate each one. Then they’d get that one for the Big Meeting. Silly? Maybe. Many free Butterbrezeln? Definitely! And they were delicious.

I climbed that steep path up to the Heidelberg castle 3 years ago, while I attended a language school in Stuttgart. The January day I climbed it, it was icy and extremely slippery. Quite the challenge!

You should give Mikey a more intensive Brezel treat as he seems that he does not like the bretzel with the slight undertone of butter - get him one with Obazda. It is even okay if you take the brezels from the freezer that you still need to bake and the ready made Obazda from the supermarket fridge.

Unfortunately I have to tell you that I am a little disappointed. Sweet Heidelberg is certainly full of nice cafes with excellent coffee and good cakes. With real porcelain and friendly service. And if it's just a small part of our German culture, it's what you should have shown your brother. Instead, you take him to Starbucks to drink coffee out of plastic cups.

It's just a normal thing to do, if you can eat or drink something that remembers you of your home, you will get it. Totally normal. I even bought the local mustard of my home region, as I found it on a Christmas market when I lived in another city, and I lived only three to four hours away from home. I was so homesick and nostalgic that I bought a jar and stood there listening to the guy who sells it, and had the beautiful dialect of my home.

It's not that it's such great coffee, it's that you can have your favorite drink in any Starbucks in the world and it will taste the same. Well, almost - the milk types might be different. I've had the same experience of family visiting me from Seattle, getting out of the Koelner Hauptbahnhof, seeing the Dom, seeng the Starbucks, and going right into the Starbucks.

If you like Butterbreze visit Nürnberg, they have the best! There are small huts all around the city center where you can buy them. In my opinion, the one with pepper are the best ;) The best brand is Brezen Kolb :P

At 3:46, the sign reads to use the Main Entrance to get to the castle and that the ticket counter along the Burgweg is temporarily closed, but a passage to the castel garden is possible. Ans please get your butter pretzels from a bakery, not a döner store! And German butter is lightly salted.
