To any Germans wondering: the Döner wrap thing which he calls „Yufka“ is also known as „Dürüm“. Yufka nennt man das Fladenbrot, das Gericht heißt Dürüm oder Dürüm-Döner, oder eben Yufka-Döner.

Germany does not rinse off the eggs before selling them so they can be stored unrefrigerated. The US (and Canada) gives them a wash and by doing so washes off the natural protective layer hence the need of refrigeration. First culture shock. 😁 And we sell them in boxes of ten eggs not dozens. 😉 Hint of the decimal system again.

Since the eggs came up: It's perfectly safe to keep eggs unrefrigerated, as long as they aren't washed. If they do get refrigerated, they need to keep being refrigerated. Eggs in the US are both washed and refrigerated, so... you'll need to keep them refrigerated. In Germany, they are neither, so it's up to the customer whether they want to keep their eggs in the fridge or not.
@tts8361
@tts8361 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, but if you buy eggs in Europe, and put them in an incubator, a few of them will hatch, as the amount of eggs from free-range and deep-litter eggs is much, much larger. In the US, a bigger portion of eggs will come from industrialized poultry farms, and therefore won't be fertilized.
@Checkb28
@Checkb28 2 жыл бұрын
Thats correct. US eggs are washed with chlorine water to get rid of salmonella. That washes away the natural wax protection of the egg, so it needs to be refrigerated or bacteria can migrate into the egg. German chickens are vaccinated against most salmonella spc. and the eggs can be stored „cool and dry“ but not necessarily refrigerated.
@lorrainemoynehan6791
@lorrainemoynehan6791 2 жыл бұрын
@@Checkb28 you are right. However once eggs, the ones that have not had their protective shell destroyed, have been stored in the fridge the moisture starts to permeate the semi-porous shell, so they can start to take on smells from the fridge. Much, much better to store them in a dry place

Well but for a person it counts what you knew first. When you're from Berlin you think all cities look like Berlin and Hamburg would be weird. If you're from Hamburg it would be the other way around. I rather take from that to sometimes remember to apreciate how unique many european cities are and rediscover some of that wonder that Americans feel when seeing it for the first time 🤗

Bad Münstereifel I know since I was a little kid, because it's near to my hometown, but still the perfect Oldtown with Fachwerkhäuser made it special everytime. I pray they are able to restore it and make it shine again..

I guess the word you were looking for is confidence (Selbstbewusstsein), right? :) Being self conscious has a different meaning and is one of many false friends between English and German. It's more like "sich seiner selbst bewusst sein", mostly used for a rather uncomfortable feeling e.g. when being on a stage und suddenly realizing it's you on there being watched by all these people. Or maybe being in a conversation, suddenly shifting your focus from the content to the way you speak or something like that.

Frankly, for as long as Nalf has been in German, his German pronunciation is somewhat lacking. From his brothers few words spoken as he was eating, I think he has a better natural "ear" for German. This from an Ami who has fairly good German pronunciation, but my German grammar sucks! My advice for Mikey is to get into a German class as soon as possible, or sign up for one of the online German classes.
