Floating sauna? Check. Committing moves high above Finland’s biggest lake? Check. This is deep water soloing … Finnish style.
Finnish climber Nalle Hukkataival is arguably one of the world’s most prolific first ascensionists of highball boulders. But as the blocs keep getting bigger and bigger, he recently traded a crash pad for freshwater. In this film, we get Nalle’s down-home take on deep water soloing.

Love how he says "there's even a floating sauna under the cliff" like Mother Nature just put it there as she was creating those cliffs

Finns have a very characteristic tenderness when they speak about their country. They love their land in a very pure and true way. Listening to Nalle describing their trip reminded me that.

When Kendrick Lamar released “damn” I don’t think he would have guessed that years later, his album would be played at a remote lake in Finland during a deep water free solo. Love it. Great climb mate.

@@stephenr80 I think that's wrong. Basque is a language isolate, the only member of its Vasconic family. Finnish is a Uralic language, connected to Hungarian and several other Uralic family descendants. There is no know connection between Basque and any of the Uralic family. One linguist, writing in 1862, hypothized a connection, but essentially nobody else agrees that this is correct.

I have 2 questions... First is: how many chalk bags / dry shoes do they have standing by? I know it takes a while for shoes to dry from working in a gym and you can't put chalk in a bag that is even damp. Second is: I wonder if they check the water with a depth-finder or anything before they jump from so high into it for rocks in a place that isn't known to be a safe jumping spot and out in the wilderness? Great video!
@yrrahyrrah
@yrrahyrrah 2 жыл бұрын
Not only shoes and chalk bags, but dry pants as well. Can't imagine climbing with dripping wet pants either. :D As for the depth of the water. What I do usually when jumping from rocks is that I dive as deep as I feel comfortable doing feet first a few times at different spots and if I don't reach the bottom, it's good to go. When you jump from like 10 m you don't really go deeper than 4-5 m with your feet (less if you have good technique I guess), and diving that deep is no problem.
