Got mine at the Miami pen show and I really love the quality and heft of the pen. The only thing is a wished it had a # 30 nib. But it’s a lovely pen 👍

Congratulations on completing your Namiki/Pilot collection! Seeing all those nibs is pretty neat! I don't know why I thought of this, but I would love if you could find a way to make your handwriting a font for typing. You have a very unique style of handwriting!

Lovely rich red with the gold clip and good line variation with the nib. I have seen that with a Platinum soft-fine nib.

Great looking pen. I will still go for the custom urushi or the namiki emperor first.

+1 for the CU, I think the Yukari is the better pen but the FM nib on the CU that I have is definitely more fun to use!

Most excellent pen. The “1221” on the nib is the month and year of its production. For the curious this type pen is the No. 20. The larger pen in ebonite is the No. 50. If maki-e is added to these pens they become named respectively the Yukari Royale and the Emperor. These days the two tone nibs are installed on the maki-e versions of these pens. The No. 50 pen is only available with M or B nibs whereas this No. 20 can be had, as shown, with a F nib.

The No. 50 nib is also available as a fine-medium, labelled .

Actually the Namiki No.50 is available also in FM. On special order have seen a BB as well.

What a lovely pen: suspect if I had to pick a ‘grail’ pen, it would either be this or Platinum’s dorsal fin 2!:); if you’re looking for a replacement for terra firma, try Montblanc’s St Exupéry:)

I sold mine, I just didn’t care for the brass body. If this pen was ebonite, it would be a game changer!

Thanks for the review! One pilot nib is missing though : the pilot E95S. Although this is an inlaid nib, so I guess it doesn't count.

I didn't include "non-traditional' nibs like the E95S and VP.

Thanks for the review. How would you compare the nib with others' by Pilot/Namiki, e.g. custom urushi/845/emperor?

My Namiki Yukari Royale in Vermillion is my favorite pen in my collection! It is a flawless pen and a joy to use.

now that you own all the _standard_ nibs, are you planning to complete your collection of of non-standard nibs, like the various hooded nibs and the myu and vp and all that?

The pilot namiki rep told me the emperor and Yukari models had a solid 18k band at the base of the cap. I dont think they're gold plated? I know the clip is, but the accent ring shouldn't be.

not knowing how you store your empower, i wonder if the color difference could be attributed to light exposure-red pigments tend to be the least light fast.

10:00 the nib on your Namiki Nippon Art is actually a number 5. The Nippon Art series is divided into two sets. One is higher priced and has number 10 nibs and the one your crashing waves belongs to is the entry level with number 5 nibs. You can check out the nib sizes on Namiki's official website.

1. It IS weird that those two pens have the same length clip. Speculations: 1. The length of the clip was judged unimportant aesthetically. 2. The length is selected for ideal clipping, which is the same for every pen. 3. It is prohibitively expensive to make two sizes of clips, or specifically a shorter clip. 4. Due to convenience or time constraints, this compromise was allowed. 5. A mistake was made. Any others? My personal opinion of the Pilot company is far too high for any of the above explanations to be believable. 2. If you have any Nakayas, could you say a word or two in comparison between the Namiki and the Nakaya brands? TIA.
@jamespicht1128 Жыл бұрын
Do you consider the clip on the Emperor too short, or the one on the Yukari Royale too long? I think it looks good on both, though I think it’s only functional as a clip on the Yukari Royale. I occasionally carry mine in my pocket. I think the Emperor is too large to carry in a pocket, so I think the clip functions primarily as a roll-stop. It doesn’t have to be any longer than it is to serve that function effectively.
@ichirofakename Жыл бұрын
@@jamespicht1128 Now that's an actual logical explanation.
@paulmchugh14302 жыл бұрын
I agree, this pen is gorgeous but having it in ebonite would have been perfect. The price is extravagant. You can get a King of Pen with an ebonite body for significantly less than this pen. I know the Urushi lacquer application is time consuming and hence the price but...
@jacobus572 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I can't get past the "cheap" of a brass body. That said David, I'm glad you like it!
@CorneliusBartke2 жыл бұрын
Personally, I like that the Yukari Royale has a brass body as it adds some weight. What sets these apart in my mind is not the fact that they are Urushi-lacquered but rather the flawlessness of the result.
@jamespicht1128 Жыл бұрын
Ebonite is just heavily vulcanized rubber, formerly used to make bowling balls and car batteries. I don’t see it as a more luxurious material than brass. I think its use in the Emperor pens makes sense because they’d be absurdly heavy in metal. Brass gives the Yukari Royale pens a nice heft. I have one finished in maki-e and raden that’s a joy to write with and that I think would be disconcertingly light in just ebonite. Extravagantly priced? Yes, but I’m told that it took over three months to make, and the results and finish are absolutely flawless. They could have painted it over papier-mâché like my lacquered Russian boxes and it would be worth the price, I think, but I’d be afraid to hold it too tightly.
@maxgainz84062 жыл бұрын
Why don’t they make nice pens that flex.. now ai have to choose between having a boring black pen or writing boring uniform lines.. Even Pilot and MB who have the nib for it only offer it on their most standard pen bodies.
@madcrowmaxwell2 жыл бұрын
Quick nitpick here. The Yukari Royale is technically just the maki-e version. The plain Urushi version is officially called something boring like the Namiki No. 20 or something.
@rus1ru2 жыл бұрын
I think yes and no. Yukari Royale and number 20 are indeed the same model and have slightly bigger bodies than the maki e pens which are usually just called Yukari followed by name of decorative motif.
@CorneliusBartke2 жыл бұрын
There are maki-e decorated pens in both Yukari and Yukari Royale size, too. The plain ones are part of the "Urushi Collection" and referenced by number only, though many people still call these Yukari Royale (No. 20) and Emperor (No. 50).

As a pen user and not collector, I have run out of patience with these pen companies using over-sized extravagant packaging. While the higher end pens are particularly guilty of this, nearly all pen companies are. I have boxes in storage with nothing but the cases, etc., the pens came in. They are an environmental waste. Noodler’s is the only company which has the right idea. Perhaps pen companies could offer their customers a choice between “presentation” boxing and environmentally responsible boxes. We are paying for the pen, not the box and then must contend with either storing the box or finding a responsible to get rid of it.
@jonathanvanier Жыл бұрын
I personally love these big boxes as I find they are part of the experience and enjoyment of the product. But I find your idea of giving the choice to the customer between the regular box and a space-saver option a fine compromise that could be implemented without a significant hassle.
@jamespicht1128 Жыл бұрын
I find excess packaging in general pretty annoying, but I’ve found uses for some of my large presentation boxes. The largest one holds over a dozen bottles of ink on my desktop. A couple of smaller ones hold pen supplies in my desk drawers. Others, I’m afraid, have gone in the trash or are being saved to hold Christmas gifts, after which they will probably go in the trash. I don’t think those soft wood boxes used by Namiki and other Japanese pen companies are environmentally irresponsible, but I think the “leatherette” (plastic) boxes and filler materials some pens are shipped in _are_ irresponsible.
@phildo864 Жыл бұрын
In general I agree, but in the case of paying over a thousand dollars for the pen, and especially when the wood box serves the function of protecting the pen from being too dry in an environment, I want the nice box to store everything.

It looks like a sausage
@judyjacobs58272 жыл бұрын
This shape, called "cigar" by many, is classic, functional, and found in many fountain pens over decades. Nearly every fountain pen is longer than it is wide.
@GPngts2 жыл бұрын
@@judyjacobs5827 It's not just the shape (which is much more sausage-like than other pens), but also the size and the color. It looks and feels like writing with a sausage. Highly over-rated and over-priced. I could not help but shake my head when David called this sausage pen "beautiful". I guess if you pay enough for it, you would find even a turd beautiful...
@CorneliusBartke2 жыл бұрын
What pens do you find aesthetically pleasing?
@GPngts2 жыл бұрын
@@CorneliusBartke I like a variety of pens, e.g. Parker Vacumatic golden pearl; Pelikan M400 tortoiseshell; Pilot VP black carbonesque; any number of Kaigelu 316a finishes; all 3 Jinhao 75 finishes, etc.
@jamespicht1128 Жыл бұрын
@@GPngts I think when spending that much on a pen, most of us do some research and soul-searching (“is that _really_ the pen I want?) before pulling the trigger. We buy it because we think it’s beautiful, rather than blundering into a $1,500 purchase and trying to convince ourselves that we think it’s beautiful. That said, I much prefer the black version, which I think is elegant, but I bought a maki-e version (much more expensive) which I think is spectacularly beautiful and that fits my relatively large hand perfectly. It’s at the $100-$200 level that I’m more likely to find myself trying to convince myself that I like a pen when I’m not sure I do. That’s expensive enough that I’ll feel buyer’s remorse if I don’t love it, cheap enough that I’ll buy on impulse without being certain that I want it. I tried out a Namiki Emperor at a pen show recently. It was a gorgeous piece of art, but for me, totally impractical as a writing instrument. Not a sausage, but a scepter, useful for braining groveling subjects, not for writing love letters to my wife.
