I'd like to think my drawing stands on its own, but maybe that's not the case. What will happen if, instead of using my typical $15 fountain pen, I use a $1,500 fountain pen? The Namiki Yukari Royale Vermillion Urushi with an 18k Gold Fine Point brings a lot to the table. This can be both good and bad, and I look at the pros and cons in this video.

But I doubt that Peter, when not on camera, would rarely if ever reach for a fountain pen first to do one of his drawings. I love fountain pens but they are kind of like antique cars , more to be collected, looked at , and lovingly set aside in a garage.

@@BigDomski I don't see the point in buying very expensive cars or watches, yet many people find it important to own such things, even if they're not collectors. People prioritize what's important to them in terms of daily luxuries. I don't know that I'd call myself a "collector"--I have lots of pens, but I don't treat them as collector's items; I use them all and won't buy a pen I won't use--and I'd love to get a pen an urushi artisan spent months lacquering and decorating one day when times are less uncertain.

Love the pen. I do use my tools to help "set the mood" for my work, though I mostly do deep knowledge work and writing, not drawing. A nice notebook, a nice pen that feels right, and an inspiring ink are all something that make me happy and emotionally more "positive", which can help my motivation. I recently found myself feeling a little emotionally "down" and so I switched from using a black ink to Platinum's Blue Black ink, and my mood pretty instantly perked back up. Sometimes just switching things up and finding some joy in the little things can make a difference. I have my "favorite" pens that I use, and they are not always my most expensive pens.

I think that there is something to having nice materials that's helpful in the creative process. Like, when you're cooking and you use a good knife, it makes you want to use it more. I think art supplies work the same way. BUT I also think there's a threshold where quality plateaus and you begin to enter into branding territory that causes things to be expensive. I've never used a $1500 pen before but I absolutely noticed a difference when I purchased my first $70 fountain pen from the $5 ones I've used in the past.

I remember the moment I decided to be an artist. My grandmother gave me my first professional set of watercolors and it was like the heavens opened up and choirs of angels began to sing and I thought this is what I want to do with the rest of my life! Having that first professional set of watercolors open up so many possibilities to me. I think this can work for you and against you but mostly always positively for me. Thanks Peter I enjoyed the video, please keep them coming’ I have spent $55 on a Noodler’s triple tail pen and I think that is the most I will ever spend on a fountain pen! What is the most you have paid for a pen? Would you spend $1500 on a pen? Just curious, please be careful out there and take care of yourself, be safe and I look forward to your next video.

Good tactic, I switch between pencil, ballpoint, felt tip, and fountain pen all the time. And given that I have multiple choices of each I keep drawing just because I like using all the crap I bought. Not fancy stuff either, just enjoyable. Give it a try. I do mainly pen on paper (or on my arm) but a while ago I got into paint and I had 2 separate times where I was incredibly excited. I got a Windsor Newton mini water color set, a mini water color sketch book, and 2 water brushes so I could travel and do water color. Then a few months later I was even more into painting so I broke down and got about 20 different colors of Windsor Newton acrylic paint tubes and a bunch of canvases and those are the times I’ve been the most excited about art I think.

When I first starting getting *in* to art in a not-little-kid-way was when I started 6th grade, and they gave us these big black sketchbooks and I never had a *real* sketchbook before and was so excited and we decorated them and whatnot. I wonder how my art would have been had I used literally any other sketchbook because the paper in them was *TERRIBLE.* I know this now. You erased anything once and it shredded to bits. I was 11, of course I was erasing things constantly, learning, trying to get things juuuust right, and getting SO frustrated that my very medium was dissolving underneath me. Canson Mixed Media pads. They are cheap, they are clean, they take pencils, lots of erasing, ink, paint, even watercolor. Fucking love those things, they're almost all I use. Had I had one of those from the beginning.. man I don't know. Woulda saved me a lot of freaking heartache. But I'm still drawing with walmart mechanical pencils, and some of my favorite pens were literally from the dollar store. Sometimes expensive isn't better, but boy some things can be very, very cheap.

You're absolutely right about the encouragement. I have a number of college degrees, more than three, but for every single one of them I treated myself to a relatively nice pen. It was such an excitement that I would go to the lecture hall and take notes with that special pen dedicated to that specific University, and then I would solve problems on engineering paper using that special ink that became my signature and that special pen. And then for the next degree it was a new "good pen" for that curriculum. I continued during my after college years with pen for this and that "license exams" prep work etc. So most of my pens are dedicated to a cause and then retired after it was achieved.

Drool drool I would love to have that pen. I love the feel of gold nibs. I'm right now using a Parker Duofold from the 1980s that I inherited for sketching figures from the Bodies in Motion website. They sell for like $500 new these days. Fountain pens aren't really designed for drawing with, they are definitely best for writing. No line variation. But somehow the bug has captured me recently and I keep buying more of them. Mostly vintage ones that I shouldn't take anywhere lest I lose them!

I love the real talk here. Everything is temporary and we don’t need expensive things to make art. The most I spend on art supplies is $25 per item. I would never spend $1500 on a pen. It looks very pretty though and I’m glad you enjoyed it.

That first drawing is absolutely insane.... may be one of me favorite drawings of yours. I think its because I'm a freak for mythology and that drawing sort of tastes like that.

I have a tube of urushi and it cost me about 15$. It's the craftsmanship that costs (and the gold nib), not the tree sap

The texture of paper and the way my pencil or pen feels and sounds on that paper. That is really the determining factor on what happens next.

For me, i like to have all kind of pens, brushes and pencils, cheap and fancy, and the same with paper. Lots of cheap paper, some good blocks and some top of the line, and i go through all of them depending the mood or task at hand or whatever. But the most relevant thing for my inspiration has nothing to do with materials but with the time of the day. From 12 midnight to 4 am i'm "in the zone". During the day i can do some studies, sketches etc and nothing that requires creativity and "magic".

I totally get why some people would want to spend a lot of money on fountain pens. I use Visconti and Montblanc for taking notes on a daily basis or just to scribble something during the break. Why? As you said, the nibs are just smoother on the paper, it definitely feels better which for me is very important. Or sometimes the materials are special, which also matter to me at least. I don’t understand why some hate on others because they use expensive pens. Each will spend their money on whatever they please. Thank you for the video!

Wealth inequality, mostly. Of course it is infuriating to people making pennies if their employeer or landlord is using the fruits of their labour on extravagances. Same criticism people have about cathedrals or the pyramids. No one is living humbly except for their 1500 dollar pen lol. I think while people are extorted for their labour and grossly underpaid and overworked, products designed exclusively for the rich who oppress them will always be viewed with suspicion, despite their exquisite materials or craftsmanship. And only more so when the entire value of a thing is its rarity and not its properties.

I agree with your conclusions. I've bought expensive writing utensils to help inspire and motivate me to draw more, but ultimately it doesn't work and puts pressure to perform on a higher level. I find I do the best work when the tools get out of the way and I don't even notice them. So a more comfortable pencil or pen with the right lead and ink is better than a pretty one or one of exotic materials. I don't want to be thinking about it rolling off the table, or getting scratched, or care if it does.
