For the above comment regarding the role of a woman as metaphor. It means we are all woman, and there is no man. We are all woman and there is no man as soon as we attempt to know the divine. This levels all if our cultural imbalances-by using a reference we all understand ❤️

I think of the I am as a declaration of identity. I am is what creates your reality. If you identify with liniting beligs then that is what you create. Its not about being egosentric. The I am is Gods name. I am that Iam - I am god, the creator of my life. The Iam is about empowerment if you know Oneness and bring about victimhood if your cnscioisness cannot see beyond what is in the limiting reality..

Sigh, while your commentary on awakening consciousness, is truly valuable. As a woman, I wish you had selected a different writing to explore. Given the cultural context when this was written ( even though there were some actively courageous women) most were seen as secondary to men in society, ( and in many countries, still are) women at best were relegated to the passive, receptive roles. Wife, mother, daughter, all subservient to husband, sons, fathers. So the metaphor of our relationship of the human soul to the divine as receptive/female to the powerful beloved/male isn’t the best analogy for today. It only reinforces subconscious bonds of the masculine/male/men importance over feminine/female/women. This lens through which so many experience this world, so desperately needs to be reformed, if we are regain balance on this planet. 🙏

Though this is not representative of the sikh landscape. Sikhi contionusly advocated for true equality between women and men, for instance, "We are conceived in woman, We are born to woman. It is to woman we get engaged, and then get married. Woman is our lifelong companion, And pillar of our survival. It is through woman, that we establish social relationships. Why should we denounce her, When even kings and great men are born from her?" (P. 473 SGGS Guru Nanak) Although the Hindu and Muslim cultures at the time did not accept such equality, Sikhi definitely did at that time and still does. The divine onesness(God) as recognized by Sikhi is genderless and is not a being, it is "Ajooni" or "Beyond Birth" and has been emphasized in the SGGS as being neither male or female. As for his usage of the bride, it is very metaphorical and is used to primarily convey the point of reuniting with the divine. Sikhi was one of the first dharmic religions and for that matter any religion that seriously advocated that men and women are equal and no one is greater!

@@lastuch1ha469 yes, I am aware of this. Thank you for sharing. Though riddle me this: why in Gurmuki/Punjabi in text (including Japji Sahib) is the Divine predominantly referred to with masculine pronouns? Is the language structured the same as Spanish, where plural nouns of groups of people always use the male gender? Can you see, how even with Guru Nanak’s writing for the respect for women, the very language subtlety influences a male superiority?

@@critterkarma To my knowledge, I believe that Guru Nanak formed this dynamic of husband-lord to his bride merely as a way of displaying a romantic relationship between the creation and the creator. Especially in the context of Sohila, Guru Nanak is trying to use an analogy for depicting his divine love in a relationship similar to the loving wife awaiting her husband. Obviously this is all metaphorical so it can be applied to both men and women(men or women can place themselves within the role of the bride in front of the divine). Guru Nanak is trying to explain something and this is the way he decided to explain it. Though I find this pronoun predicament to be quite trivial as even if Guru Nanak used Wife-lord or she, would this change much? It would still convey the same point. The point is that Guru Nanak does not always talk of the divine in this manner and only does in Sohila(and a couple other sabads) merely to express the relationship of love. If you read the Gurmukhi for the most part of the SGGS, the divine is gender neutral, and English translations usually have to depict the divine by pronoun so that the translation is grammatically correct. If you believe that the SGGS is not gender neutral regarding the divine(other than these specific instances such as Sohila) than please provide an example.

I think that soul-bride is a beautiful metapor. I am a woman and at first, I also felt uncomfortable when learning about this analogy. First thing, we have to understand that our real identity is gender neutral. Our soul is neither female or male. Our bodies are merely vessels which we are being loaned out to us momentarily. I do not believe that men are superior to women. However, hypothetically, even if that were true, would it even matter? Whether we are in the body of an ant, dinosaur, woman or man, it doesn't really matter. In Gurbani, I think that there is a Shabad talking about the power or beauty of Waheguru who turns man into woman.

Secondly, I think that the soul-bride concept is actually empowering. It celebrates feminine qualities. (All of us have both masculine and feminine qualities). When embarking on a spiritual path, we need to adopt feminine qualities. This means breaking away from our own self-importance and our own identity to take on a new identity where we are servants to the husband and husband's family. Our true husband is Waheguru and our true family is all of creation. Traditionally, women were celebrated for being softer. In another words, compassionate, compromising for the greater good, loyal, humble, forgiving, etc. Masculine traits have an important role too but feminine traits are superior. (Kindly notice how I am not saying women are superior to men or vice versa.) Gurus are trying to elevate all mankind to that of traditional women. While I believe that traditional women were incorrect in their belief that we should be subservient to men, I do admire them. On a side note, Sikhs are supposed to be Sant-Sipahi. Saint and Soldier. Sainthood (Piri) is given more importance although worldly power (Miri) has an important role to play in protecting societies and values. When I think of Saintliness, I think of feminine qualities.
