Traditional Japanese painting before the Meiji era consists of two main styles -- Kan-ga (漢画), the Chinese style, and Yamato-e (大和絵), the Japanese style. The post-Meiji Nihon-ga artists are very aware of what constitutes their tradition and have consciously incorporated these techniques. The most distinctive feature of Kan-ga and Yamato-e is the way they draw the lines. While Kan-ga artists draw lines of varying width and pressure to create depth and dimension, Yamato-e stick to even, regular width lines, which is called Tessen-byo (鉄線描/wireframe drawing). If you compare the works of two artists from the Momoyama period (1568-1603), you can clearly see the difference: Kano Eitoku and Hasegawa Touhaku. Traditionally, the rich and powerful in Japan preferred Kan-ga, the Chinese style -- throughout the Edo period (1603-1867), the court painters of the Bakufu, the Japanese government at that time, were always artists of the Kano school (狩野派/Kano-ha), which used distinctive Chinese style techniques.

That's so cool and fascinating! Thank you so much for sharing your insight and wisdom! It's amazing how much detail they go into and have quite a bit of difference between the Kan-ga and the Yamato-e. So basically it means that Nihon-ga has both artists. The ones that paint in the Kan-ga style and also the Yamato-e style. Do Nihon-ga artists today tend to mix the two artstyles together along together with Yōga (Western-style painting) and how did it evolve. I would love to know your thoughts on it since you know so much about Nihon-ga! Thanks for sharing again!

I want to see the artwork, not captions that obscure the artwork and repeat what you are saying.

Beautiful painting, would be better if you knew how to pronounce simple English and the names of the painters.

Thank you so much! And when you meant by "Pronounce simple English." Do you mean about simplifying the explanation more and saying the names of the Japanese artists in English?" Would love to know. Thanks for your feedback! And thanks for watching!
