I am not taking away from Osaka's win! however comparing what happened on the court is basically, more energy vs. less energy, which is a part of growing older in all sports.

Not necessarily... a younger Serena would also be a less experienced one. You could also say an older more experienced Osaka would have won Serena decisively every time. You can't eat your cake and have it!

Absolutely, but Osaka beating Serena at this age means we can't really compare them at all. We can't bring back say, a 2015 Serena to play Osaka whenever she reaches her prime, so we would never know the real outcome if they both played at 100%.

Osaka did to Serena what Serena used to do to Maria, Azarenka and Halep. Overplayed, outplayed, outserved, out hit, out-clutched, out-run. Basically a total beat down.

@@cineastik8220 Unlike most players, Naomi has a very compact swing and she hits her groundstrokes late but her hands are so fast and she's physically very strong that she is able to change the direction of the ball at the very last moment. Another player with that skill--- Bianca Andreescu. Andreescu's is actually more interesting because her game has more variety than Osaka. Bianca has power but she just doesnt have consistent accuracy ( i dont think she physcially is as strong as Naomi) but like everyone stated, she has very compact and short swings but great racket speeds. Compare the swings of Osaka, Bianca with Sabalenka's swing and you could see the difference, night and day. It really benefits when your swing is compact and you can still generate great shape on the ball with racket speed without giving away where you are going with the ball

Which is exactly why I said in one comment I made on a different post Serena has to keep the rally’s short with drop shots and volleys and maintain center position she had so many open shots and unforced errors and she played to Naomi’s strengths Serena could have definitely pulled off the win if she just relaxed and played sharp one two punch service games, couple of aces and a war like mentality!!! I didn’t see aggression and power in her play she played with nerves and fear she’s gotta dig deep she’s done it before!!!

I only played tennis in high school, so maybe I can't say anything here. But this kinda looks similar to how boxers don't always throw their hardest jabs or full momentum jab until they know 95% they can land that solid hit. Because if it hits air, it's just too much expended energy and stamina. It looks like Serena has a lot of strength behind her shots, and it seems that usually that works for her. But Osaka capitalizes on the energy that Serena expends. If Serena can't win in a couple of hits, she just becomes too tired to run around the court, while Osaka looks like she's just redirecting what's being thrown at her.

A young Serena could have returned some of Osaka's winners and put herself in position to hit better angles. Her lack of stamina in her old age and from motherhood forces her to hit as hard as she can and hope to end points early. If she tried to hit softer balls to conserve energy, she still would have lost because Osaka would have just dragged the points as long as necessary.

For me, neither player were at their best this match, but how Naomi upped her level in the last 2 games of the match shows how mentally tough she is. She did what Serena did to so many opponents throughout her career, and has really grown into one of the most mentally tough players on the tour. She really is becoming the next great player and has grown so much throughout the years to become the player she is now. Serena Williams, it’s unfortunate we didn’t see her best here but what she has achieved in these two weeks is still incredible at this stage of her career. To beat Sabalenka in the 4th round and play such a high quality match against Halep shows she still can play amazing tennis. What she has achieved, and still is achieving is incredible and is certainly so amazing to see her do so well in this time of her career. Really wish the best for Naomi and Serena in the 2021 season.

I didn't watch the highlights till now. The media seems to portray that Serena lost the match because her game broke down on her own. There was an article that says Serena was cruising in the first set. This highlight reel basically showed Osaka totally ran Serena out of the court. Let's give the younger player the credit she deserves. Most players facing Serena will have surrendered the first set after being 2-0 down. Not Osaka, she fought back immediately and won 7 out of the next 8 games to easily win the first set. And to hold serve after being 0-40 down in the second set... Class act of a champion

Serena was trying to play defense with an offensive player. Naomi lined up her shots perfectly, hitting behind Osaka is the only way to create openings, Muguruza did this well and couldn’t close out Osaka. Osaka is very mentally though and wouldn’t allow Serena’s domination to crack her. Serena wasn’t creating any angles or going for any big shots, barely came to the net and didn’t give Osaka any pressure points. Serena’s head wasn’t in the game and focused Naomi is clearly unmatched by any player so far. I could hear Serena screaming “make a shot” and yes that’s exactly what she needed to do but Naomi doesn’t often give you the type of balls to “make a shot” with. My advice for Serena if she ever meets Naomi again is just to serve well it’s the only thing she can do against such a player, otherwise Naomi will hand out a total beat down. Congrats Naomi and Serena for giving us this show stopper. Serena don’t feel sad you can keep on trying

With the exception of Wimbledon, Naomi has beaten Serena in straight sets at 3 of her favourite hunting grounds. Miami 2018, US Open 2018 and Australian Open 2021, Serena won titles 8 in Miami, 6 in NewYork and 7 in Melbourne. It’s fair to say that mantle has definitely been passed on to the new Queen ❤️

9"03 How did she make that angle ? By using the hip rotation, as we can see in slow motion.
