Napoli is the best city, no doubt. For a totally other end of the Italian spectrum, I invite you to walk around my family's other hometown, Vipiteno. Way up North in Alto-Adige near the Brenner Pass along the Austrian border. Beautiful place for walking.

In Naples all you need is to keep in mind position of the sea. Once you know where you are, relating to the sea, you can't get lost.

You’re comparing a city to one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. San Francisco is a dump compared to Big Sur and Monterrey on the Pacific Ocean, but still an amazing city. Also comparing Napoli to Queens is ridiculous. One city is 2000 years old, the other barely 150. So yes, after a couple of millennium it looks a little “worn”. Go up to Vomero on the hill and it’s much cleaner with wider streets. The Manhattan vs Queens of your analogy. Finally, Napoli is more of an experience - the smells, the sounds the people. There’s a vibrancy and dynamic culture that cannot be relayed through video - unlike Paris, for example, that is a jewel to look at in person and is so in video as well.

You are comparing small towns that are on probably the most wonderful coastline in the world and are totally made up for tourists to one of the most densely populated metropolitan areas in the western world =) Even in its poor maintenance conditions, Naples is wonderful!

A few examples: - Rent of a large studio flat in the historic center: €400/month - Rent of a single room in a share in the historic center: up to €300 - Starter, pizza and beer at a restaurant table: between €10 and €15 depending on choice and location - Commercial beer at a "baretto": up to €2 - Breakfast standing at a bar the Italian way: €2-3 for a cappuccino and a "cornetto" As a student I used to live decently with €400 a month, I was paying €200 for the flat I was sharing with a friend and could eat and go out with the rest. If you could have €1500 euros a month you would live in Naples like a king. The problem here is finding a job that pays so much :) The most expensive thing here is car/motorcycle insurance, definitely the most expensive in Europe. I pay around €1000 yearly for a 650cc motorbike. Regarding safety, it's not the safest city as much as it's not the least safe. You need to pay attention in Naples and avoiding dark alleys alone at night is a good idea, but I have to say that nothing ever happened to me in an entire life, and I didn't even avoid the dark alleys alone at night :)

Yes, the city is not managed very well. The city of Naples could be a major tourist destination but I think it has a bit of a bad reputation. I really enjoy Napoli and the surrounding area.

It was so nice seeing this. I was born in Naples. My parent put me in a orphanage when I was 4. I sill remember the day my father left me there. My mom would come see me one a year and take me for a week and then send me back to the orphanage.I remember a lot of holidays I was the only kid there with the nuns. I even escaped from there when I was about 8 and walked all the way to my aunts house. She looked at me and said “ what are you doing here” but in Italian. Lol I just bust out crying. After a couple of days my mom came and got me and I went back to the orphanage. My luck did change and I was adopted by American family when I was nine. Six months later my adopted parent told me that my biological mother died of cancer. Now the only way that I was able to be adopted is if your family didn’t come to get you at least once out of that year. Now because my mom was sick she wasn’t able to come see me so that made my illegible to be adopted. I remember many days walking the same path this person is walking but this time it was with my adopted parents. Two years later my parents now came back to America and I came here with them. I would love to go back, I think about it everyday. I ask myself, if I didn’t get adopted where would I be. So looking at this really brings me back memories. I would love to go back but I was a little knucklehead when I was younger here in America. I did almost get deported back to Italy, but Italy says by there immigration laws because I was adopted by American parents I’m no longer Italian but the USA says I’m not American because I never filed for citizenship so I’m in a limbo. Everyday I just wish I can go back and visit Naples again and have some of that good pizza lol. Seeing this really makes me happy. I’m married now and have 4 kids. I’m a plumber by trade and love it here in America, but Naples Italy is close to my heart. Thanks for this video. It brings so many good memories back. Ciao

Per me la città è valorizzata dal fatto di essere vissuta dal suo popolo, che ha il diritto di restare nelle proprie case e non di essere buttato fuori a calci per far spazio a noiosi viali alberati. Quelle catapecchie senza alcun valore, come le chiami tu, sono palazzi pieni di persone che ci vivono, e la stragrande maggioranza sono palazzi storici che un valore ce l'hanno e come. Napoli è la città più viva che io abbia mai visto e non mi sento mai altrettanto bene quando vivo in un'altra città (1 anno a Berlino, 2 a Roma e quasi 3 a Londra). Poi sono più che d'accordo sul livello di manutenzione, che è pessimo, ma a parte questo a Napoli non cambierei una virgola!

Basterebbe usare le decine di milioni di euro che l'Europa ci mette a disposizione a fasi regolari (e che non vengono puntualmente usati e spediti al mittente) per rifare intonaci, facciate, arredo esterno dei palazzi degradati di alcuni quartieri del centro. Si tratta di fabbricati vecchi centinaia di anni, con un valore storico e architettonico inestimabile e con un'opera imponente di riqualificazione intere zone cambierebbero volto passando in pochi anni dal dare un'immagine di incuria e bruttura ad essere apprezzate esteticamente. Interi quartieri del centro di Roma, ad esempio trastevere, erano degradati con facciate tutte rovinate e diroccate negli anni 70-80, ma dopo un totale restauro sono diventati non solo folcloristici ma anche glamour ed eleganti

L'Italia è un contributore netto del budget UE (cioè ogni anno da più soldi all'europa di quanti ne riceva indietro...) dunque i cosiddeti "soldi dell'europa" sono soldi nostri, dei contribuenti italiani, con la piccola differenza che l'UE ci impone di usarli con criteri talmente farraginosi da renderne oggettivamente difficile l'impiego, soprattutto per gli enti locali indebitati in quanto i progetti legati ai fondi UE devono obbligatoriamente essere cofinanziati da fondi locali, e le amministrazioni meno ricche non ce la fanno. Questa è la realtà. Cosicché molti di quei soldi ( soldi nostri, delle nostre tasse) l'Europa se li pappa e noi li perdiamo. Basterebbe uscire da questo aborto di Unione Europea come hanno fatto saggiamente gli inglesi e l'Italia avrebbe più fondi a disposizione per tutte le città italiane, Napoli inclusa. In ogni caso, aspettando che cio' avvenga, si possono reperire fondi privati, come è avvenuto a Roma per il restyling del Giubileo nel 2000 o a Milano per il restyling dell'expo 2016.

You know what? I was thinking on that! The captations for instance, add much deeper interest to the video, and in a city like Naples... stoping here and there to show the tremendous variety and richness of the street markets stands and strret food! When I started this channel I thought of my walks as Treadmill Walks so I was walking really fast and not looking around as much. Now I am leaning more towards making Walking Tour videos and Treadmill Walks as separate kinds of videos. I could still make a treadmill walk of Naples but it would be different that a Walking Tour. Naples is a really great city.

Naples is wonderful, but if all you care about is cleanliness then you better avoid it. You will miss out on the most unique city life you can experience in Italy and maybe in Europe though! Naples is not made up for tourists, it's authentic!

But if you look a bit better you will see how many beautiful buildings and what a stunning seafront he has filmed as well. Naples is affected by poor maintenance but it still has a lot of beauty to offer.

@@torom86I didn't mean to offend. Yes, there are beautiful buildings, old and beautiful, which the graffiti artists don't seem to respect. And that makes me sad. That sadness that I was feeling reminded me of the "good old days" of being able to walk in downtown Los Angeles without all the dirt, crime and druggies. None of those things did I equate to Naples...in fact I think I saw only 1 homeless sleeping bag...I assume it belonged to the homeless. No druggies, no fear of women walking on their own, even in the Spanish Quarter that has a bit of a reputation I understand. I was talking about how the graffiti made me feel about the place. And in a 2 hour walk...most of the walls I saw, eye level remember...were covered with it.

Well....it was really my fault. This was my first walk and I wore the camera instead of holding it. So there is a lot more bounce. Then I used KZfaq to try and stabilize it but it made it wavy. I need to go back and make a new Naples walk.

@john vento What are you talking about? You only said that the city is a craphole and that your mum used to say to keep away from it. There's nothing to change or to be embarassed about, we have our amount of problems and bad people, but also plenty of things that I love and that many visitors love too. There's a lot to improve but you are just offending in the most generic way. And if you think the city should be gentrified to be worth your respect, you have to know that not everyone likes gentrification and gentrified cities, and the people who love Napoli usually love it also for this reason.
