If Stanley Kubrick had shot the moon landing the result would have been much better than the amateurish performance we got where the actors flubbed their lines. "CUT! No, no, no Neil! Its "one step for _a_ man", not "one small step for man", get it right or I'm giving your lines to Buzz, roll cameras, take 97"

so I got to see Napoleon (2023) in December of last year at a test screening in Glendale, CA…. And I’ve got to say, it’s a far cry from Barry Lyndon. Beyond the production design and well-helmed action (near prerequisites at $200 million), the screenplay felt utterly languid and coldly directionless. It has none of the propulsion or structural integrity that a sweeping epic requires, and feels more like a kitchen sink approach to Napoleon’s illustrious biography. I also felt Joaquin Phoenix was unusually off his game with his choices and rather goofily miscast. I can’t yet speak to how much has changed in the edit between what I saw last year and the cut that releases next week, but given the critical response and the fundamental nature of some of these issues, it seems to me the same problems persist. I’m just glad we have the masterpiece Barry Lyndon. It’s probably more interesting than any what-if Kubrick Napoleon piece, and I’d bet a whole lot that if Spielberg’s treatment ever makes it to theaters/streamers, it won’t rival Lyndon either. Thanks for the nice video.
