I had an action packed day in 2019 when I visited the region. I was staying in Himeji, took the train to Nara to see the deer, but it was so crowded even then, so I didn't want to bother going into the temple to see the Buddah (which was 1000Yen I think). Plus I needed to get to Osaka, and catch the 2pm Super Hakuto up to Tottori to see the dunes lol. Yeah, I'm that kind of traveler. But I did see a few deer on Miyajima near Hiroshima, if folks wanted another place to view them.
