one of many things fascinating abut Walden: how hard he plays coming out of a hotel, as a teenager in Europe with Mahvishnu, or in downtown SF at lunchtime on a benefit show 40 years later - its the same total involvement, and aim at funkliness, every time out to hear just how intense, there's Mahavishnu in Vienna '75 - without doubt the craziest shit ever put to tape

Narada is a force of nature. And suddenly they were having some big fun! To be sure, I love pretty much all versions of WR, but I'd never heard this. This is like the "let's have a good time" version - love it! No, Kirk isn't Wayne, but he brought his own Houston-style funk to the proceedings, which worked great also!

What an incredible solo by Wayne! His tone, note choices, ideas and form were all so enjoyable. No doubt it helps to be accompanied by an all-star band.

Wayne? That’s Kirk Whalum.

@@robreich4905 I though he looked a bit different. I didn't know anyone replaced him in WR. Oh well, great playing

I never thought of that live performance in 1995 where they played "black market" since it was a Weather Report album in the spring of 1976. Narada Michael Walden was the best one to play drums on that 😅

It doesn’t come close to Wayne Shorter’s playing
@kjwilkguitar3 жыл бұрын
@@ignaciomoran6706 That's because Kirk Whalum isn't Wayne Shorter. He brings his own flavor which is more jazz infused gospel while Wayne is strictly jazz.

@@ignaciomoran6706 You are delusional. Mr. Whalum is a phenomenal Tenor Sax player. Wayne shorter is also great alto sax player. They have their own distinct approaches to the saxophone.

@@Squirrelconga Actually, Jaco Pastorius was the original Bass Payer on this tune. I have the album. Released in 1976. Joe Zumana on Electric Piano and Synthesizers, Alex Acuna was the Drummer on the Album track. Wayne Shorter on Alto Saxophone. That was the original Weather Report band on that track on the Album in 1976/
@jonneville22872 жыл бұрын
@@Squirrelconga Michael Walden played on the album, tracks 1&2, Chester played on all other tracks, and became a member for some time. Weather Report had constant line up changes, probably due to Shorter and Zawinul having creative control over compositions. and the other musicians were merely side men. Same problem Mahavishnu had, and why Cobham left. McLaughlin had the final say over which songs went on the albums, and Cobham's material didn't get a look in. Time to start a solo career.

There’s lots of polls on who is the best drummer but a guy who has played drums for Weather Report and The Mahavishnu Orchestra and written brilliant Jazz Fusion, Dance and Love Song albums and produced for the likes of George Benson etc must be up there with the very best.

sUPER POWER FUSIONH - ALL WE NEED IS AN HARD ROCK JAZZ GUITAR PLAYER THAT COULD TAKE IT TO NEXT LEVEL

Coming from a guitarist---what made Weather Report unique was the lack of a guitarist. Your original 3 fusion super-groops (Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra & Return to Forever)---set the world of fire coming out of the gate---but Return & Mahavishnu HIT you with Connors, DiMeola & McLaughlin respectfully---but Wayne Shorter's sax came with blusey/jazz as opposed to searing jazz/rock guitar. Trust me---I loved all of the early days of fusion---but WR gave us an alternative
