I'm going to date myself here. Growing up there was Billy Cobham, there was Alphonse mouzon and another tremendous guy by the name of Michael Walden!! I love so much of what he did then. So I got to see him and meet him at the drummer's collective in New York City in that time frame. I love what he did with Jeff Beck on the wired album. He did something with Tommy bolin called marching powder that still kills me to this day. He's always been blessed and I was never able to follow him through the years but I understand he kept going and did very wonderful things in the music industry besides playing drums. I love you man!! Keep your chops up my friend!!

Here's the thing. I think Neal and Jonathan did SS a favor because he (Smith) was really out of his element when he returned to Journey. Even though Smith is THE Consummate drummer, he seemed out of place. He knows Walden very well and likes him in the drummer's chair with Journey.

After Smith changed his sticking technique, while studying under Freddie Gruber, he really ceased being a rock drummer any longer. He plays beautifully with exceptional dynamics and consummate precision. but it’s straight jazz drumming. His goals as a musician no longer consist of being a touring arena rock drummer-someone who hits hard, switches between traditional and matched grip, and provides energy and power. Deen was essentially the perfect model. Simon Phillips would’ve been incredible, but Narada is just a monster player. Comfortable in any style, hits hard, grooves like a madman... plus he can sing, write, program and produce. And many don’t remember or know just how good Randy is as a bassist. Go listen to the records he did with Jean-Luc Ponty. Easily the best bassist that’s ever played with Neal (although Marco Mendoza is superb). This band is gonna kick serious ass.
