Love this! I was drawn into a minor cult by someone who started off as my mental health therapist. To cut a long story, the mental health therapist by his own omission was BPD but post-analysis a clinical psychologist pointed out to me the therapist was actually NPD. I ended up reporting the therapist to the Health Complaints Commissioner. The therapist got disciplinary action and then allowed to continue on with his behaviour. Unfortunately I am Australian, as was the therapist, and the cult was US based so I am limited in what I can do in tackling the problem with them. I am pretty sure most of the 'Senior Facilitators' would be found to be Cluster B if diagnosed. It's taken almost 5 years to get to the point where I am thinking it's not really my problem to protect others from falling into their allure. Also like ' A toxic relationship is when you are afraid to say what you need to' or whatever it was exactly

I saw this in relation to my early life as a need for a monomorphic unified group identity around them and their beliefs about themselves, so this might be why some families effectively function as little cults. Yes, that was Popper: it's also a theme that both Poverty Of Historicism and the Open Society and It's Enemies two volumes carry.

I had a therapy session dedicated to discussing my reactions to watching "Holy Hell" as I was going NC with my family of origin. The pattern spotting thing is key in breaking free.

it is difficult for me to understand how anybody could fall for this kind of deception. I'm not judging, simply I do not get it. what is it that makes anyone believe these people? I've met gurus and leaders, I search for answers in my life, but what brings people to give up their better judgement? this interview doesn't really answer this question.

I think this is an interesting conversation. What I find confounding is that Mark thinks Biden supporters are cult-like, but he makes no mention of trump and his supporters. 🤔 Many cult experts speak about the "cult of trump". I'm not aware of any scholars or experts who think Biden is a cult-like leader. How puzzling. Perhaps the traits Mark has that allowed him to put on blinders and fall into a cult trap are still there?
