Pt 1 of 2 of Nardwuar's interview with Sonic Youth outside the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, BC, Canada. April 17 1991. For the transcript and other Nardwuar Sonic Youth encounters check out nardwuar.com/vs/sonic_youth/
Postscript: Nardwuar sez "The record that got broken was "Charlie Browning" by The Young Men from Seattle Washington, released in 1963 on the Bolo Record Label. (Bolo 742) I had brought it to the interview because I had heard (incorrectly) that Sonic Youth had recorded a version of The Coasters hit "Charlie Brown" --they really recorded Alice Cooper's "Is It My Body" -- I hypothesized that perhaps that they would be interested in seeing a Northwest take on "Charlie Brown". When I say "Northwest take" I mean that The Young Men took "Charlie Brown" and changed the words slightly to "Charlie Browning" in honour of a local football player. I personally love when songs get "regionalized" and that damn 45 was dear to my heart! Luckily I was able to find another copy a few years later in a Bellingham ,Washington Value Village. Furthermore to my amazement,, I was told, that while opening for REM at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver in 1995, Sonic Youth dedicated a song to me: "Schizophrenia" ! "

Excellent point, Professor. In 1991 not too many people outside of the Vancouver area even knew who Nardwuar was, much less what to expect with his approach to conducting interviews. I mean, that was 27 years ago. Those were very different times. I’m not even a Sonic Youth fan, but most of the self-righteous judgement people are throwing at them gratuitously in these comments just goes to show how much social media and the internet have changed the way everyone looks at these things. People are so quick to pass judgement on something that someone said almost 30 years ago, because the safety and anonymity of hiding behind a screen and using an avatar ensures that they will never have to answer for THEIR bullshit 27 years from now.

Tom McRoberts Naw he's a control freak douche that can't let the artist have fun. He has to always move the mic away and towards them, he has to set the pace of the interview and decides when a subject is enough. That's not punk at all just a total uptight square he should be able to free flow through interviews but he can't let these interviews be spontaneous

@poisoNation
@poisoNation 8 жыл бұрын
+Mr. Clean Nah I totally disagree and I think Tom is right. It's the artists that are not allowing themselves to have fun because they feel like they need to adhere to the punk cliche. Nardwuar's just an eccentric guy with a lot of music knowledge and he digs deep and really cares about the artists he's interviewing. He's even friendly enough to give them records & memorabilia of their favorite artists and you think he's a douche? Sonic Youth's rudeness is not a reflection of Nardwuar, it's only a reflection of what type of people they are.

J igwe just the opposite. Most bands in the 90’s were all about the music first. It was the era that killed the over the top 80’s rock star persona. A lot of bands dressed like normal people, unlike the hair bands did. They put the music first, before any image.

The problem was at this point in time some Punk bands didn't really know their core fan base that well. They thought what people loved about the culture was the anger, the rebellion, the lack of fucks to give. The real heart of punk culture is the fact that you can be authentically who you are, regardless of how far out there you may be and find a place in that culture to call home. Nardwuar represents that spirit way more than sonic youth ever did.

I could certainly understand maybe not feeling up to doing an interview and being slightly annoyed at the notion, but it's so crazy that despite the Nard-dog just asking simple questions, so many of his older interviewees act so despicable, and they do it all on their own. Nardwuar doesn't poke fun or ask a bunch of dumb questions, it's like a switch turns on in their brains that tells them to act as awfully as possible.

Back in the day, behaviour such as this would've been considered "cool" and "rebellious" and just an example of "fighting the system, man". Nowadays, it's considered rude and rebellion is now more akin to the opposite of rudeness; it's more about acceptance - especially social acceptance. How times have changed.
@Nantosuelta

you gotta be kidding! Social acceptance is the modern rebellion!? Thats about the farthest thing from rebellion I can think of. THOTH oh wow! you're so rebellious for being against people living their lives as they choose! look at you destroying the system, thinking being a genderless alien is the norm because you live your life on the internet. the truth is that nobody genuinely compares gender identity to being an "alien". it's just a camp and artistic choice more than anything, not a part of the gender spectrum that anybody actual acknowledges. so, we just don't care, because people identifying as an alien hurts nobody. it's not that deep. and about non binary identities, there is scientific research currently trying to explain and discover the identity and where it comes from. many experts disregard the gender binary and support non binary people. i guess professionals in the field are insane too huh? . also i hope you're not one of those people who think regular trans people are insane, especially since transgender people are validated and explained by modern science completely, because that would be embarrassing for you. so no, you saying "non binary people are insane" when you clearly have very little education on the topic doesn't make you subversive or rebellious, or against the norm in any way. because most people share your view point. it's the gender minorties who are rebellious, because they are that, the minority, yet are loud and strong enough to make you think otherwise :)

I have an observation. It’s possible that Nardwuar’s interview style was so out there in 1991 that bands genuinely didn’t know how to react. I know it’s easy to write Sonic Youth off as holier than thou hipsters in this interview, but it’s entirely possible that they were just confused and possibly suspicious that someone was making fun of them. Now, I personally typically respond to unknown things with smiles and kindness. But I’m also a big pushover. It would be easy to make fun of me or pull one over on me while I try to make polite conversation. Maybe Sonic Youth simply felt defensive by Nadwuar’s objectively frantic interview style, and who here can blame them for responding that way in 1991?

I feel like they just thought Nardwuar was trying to roast them and they weren’t having it. I’ve met Kim & thurston and they were perfectly nice enough.
