For Law of Regression, the frenzied flame seal doesn’t have any faith requirements so you can use that without respecting any points. Of course, you’d have to have a character go through and unlock it, but I hope that helps
@tommydashed42052 жыл бұрын
You can use any seal. Just like you can use other weapons without required stats (just won't get the scaling from that stat), you can also use seals and staves. You just need the required stat for the specific incant or sorcery to cast it. You'll have less incant scaling but if all you need to cast is law of regression it doesn't matter.

Some things you can try that could potentially improve the build: 1) One strategy I like doing that has seen some success is aggressively chaincasting either swift glintstone shards or carian sword into glintblades. This is so you maintain close range pressure where they can't just run away to avoid glintblade frame trapping and often results in a lot of panic rolling. 2) Try out the helix sorcery (forgot what its actually called). The actual projectile damage is ass but it has very good tracking and takes up a lot of visual space so in that respect it's a more economical version of elden stars minus not having a horrendous cast time. I've used it to mask other spells, like setting up glintblades and also sneaking in chip damage by firing shards through the live projectiles every so often. Not that good if they're hyper-aggressive but I've found success doing this. 3) Law of regression can in some cases be a counter to barrier of gold if you're able to keep pressure on them before they have a chance to apply it again, especially if they're playing a non-caster setup where they'll most likely have far worse fp economy than you do. That and its just a nice utility to have to help deal with some cancer builds like seppuku dual nagis/havelmonsters abusing equip load flask and so forth. Gotta say though pretty surprised how good magic is in this game even vs. decent players. You can actually defend yourself besides being from uganda and giving the opponent heart palpitations because they swore that spell landed like 20 seconds ago and they're just nervously waiting to see if they'll just drop dead instantly

Hey Scott, I had had a few ideas on how this build could be improved based on some ideas I've been playing with. While not strictly sorcery only, the Clayman's Harpoon makes for an extremely powerful addition to a mage's toolkit. It's got innate magic scaling yet can be buffed with scholar's armament, which lets it reach very high attack ratings on the basic spear moveset. I'm personally pushing well over 800 AR with the buff + flask at 60 int, and adding the versatility of an ash of war to a mage's already expansive array of options can allow it to deal with a much broader selection of builds. For instance, running storm stomp, which as you've mentioned is a decent tool in dealing with bloodhound step, could be used. The spear moveset also compliments the quick horizontal slashes of carian slicer quite well, especially considering that after a spear r1, you can transition directly into a chained carian slicer which comes out much more quickly. This overall helps the build hold its own when enemies close the gap from mid to close range. As well, I've found as an alternative to stars of ruin, star shower can accomplish the same function while being less blatantly overtuned and the added advantages of a lower FP cost and faster overall cast time. Without bloodhound step, it's very difficult to avoid taking any damage at long range, but has a more tangible drawback compared to stars of ruin in that it is much easier to dodge at mid to close range. This makes it a very strong finisher, especially since each individual projectile seems to do more damage compared to a shot of stars of ruin to compensate for firing less of them, which helps if you clip with a single star. It also works well with the same tools that synergize with stars of ruin, like magic glintblade or shard spiral. Let me know what you think, I'd be curious to your thoughts on the potency of these tools. -Thorn

Just some additional info that i've gleaned from running a similar build: Adula's seems to only hit multiple times on the first cast, which is why it does so much less damage when you combo it. it's also an example of a spell that's faster on the first cast than on the combo cast if you have max cast speed. Also, to beat Barrier of Gold I run Law of Regression on an offhand seal. You do not need the stats for the seal to cast Regression, just the stats for Regression itself (37 INT). It has a range into the next zipcode so typically i'll throw a few glintblades down to zone and cast regression to cancel barrier. I've had people quit when i use it but i feel that it's fair as i cast it during the duel and it's using a memory slot.

Heya Scott, small tip (even though you're maybe aware?) i was using this trick a lot in ds3 pvp, I was one of the few who mained purely sorceries, and it works here the same way. If you do phalanx and turn around quickly and then turn back again you send out the projectiles in waves rather than sending them out all at once. If you turn around quickly and turn back it only sends like 3 instead of all of them, so for example if you're backturned and you spin quickly twice you can send out three waves of projectiles from phalanx to an opponent, which is super good for resets. Once people realize what you're doing they won't want to approach you at all while doing this trick so it's nice if you want to chug blue estus. Thanks for the amazing content!

I have found a lot of success with Glintstone Stars/Star Shower (Much cheaper FP wise options to stars of ruin and they cast faster so they can punish faster). But a low-key great option versus enemy casters has been Collapsing stars, it casts significantly faster than spells like Stars of Ruin or weapon arts like Sacred Relic Sword, does fantastic damage, always interrupts regardless of poise, and ignores Eternal Darkness, it also forces them closer to you and can set up combos with Glintblades or Carian Phalanx. Collapsing Stars also outranges Stars of Ruin significantly and its great for hiding followup spells like ambush shard, swift glintstone shard, carian piercer, Adula's, etc. Magic Downpour is also pretty good as the little magic bolts shoot at the target's direction, the ball tracks their movement, the shots deal decent damage, have decent range and the FP cost is pretty low at base 20. A stagger in the orb's AOE can easily chunk a player VERY quickly. Law of Regression on a frenzy flame seal is my favorite mage buff, the buff that removes ALL buffs. It has tremendous range (about the size of the Raya Lucaria dueling area) and removes other flasks, consumables, weapon buffs of any kind (to include Seppuku), temporary buffs like Exaltation of Rot/Blood, you can then drink your flask and have both. Stars of Ruin can also be effectively avoided by rolling first forward into the burst, then rolling laterally twice in opposite directions (ex: left then right, though latency usually means you take 1-2 of the 12 bolts). I recommend having bestial sling on even non-faith oriented builds (a 1 point investment for starting Vagabond) to be able to stop a caster from doing a followup cast of stars of ruin if they are trying to be spammy. Edit: Staff of Loss could also be a good consideration over the Carian Glintstone Staff for builds that want to focus more on blasting than using slicer/piercer, its a 30% buff to Night Comet (and shard i guess), so swift Glintstone shard into Night Comet for big damage punishes is a possibility.

Maybe you already know but due to the buffering you can input the backstep command and input the direction right after letting go of the backstep button. you only get some frames but your character basically starts the animation to backstep in one direction and you can literally turn 180 degrees in any direction and thereby chain backstepping in any direction you want. ive also been doing this with carian phalanx and its pretty fluent.

I really love the swift glintstone>comet combo, and swift glintstone > moonblade combo, to shorten cast times. And it seems like one of your opponents shortened a comet cast time with carian slicer like slicer>comet. I need to try incorporating a few of those into my own playstyle. P.S. Law of regression isn't from Gideon. I think you get it from a prayer book in Leyndell right above the Erdtree site of grace. I guess if you already set the tree on fire though you probably can't get it anymore.

How to make Stars of Ruin and other sorceries with insane tracking bearable: make the tracking partially dependent on keeping the button constantly pressed down after the projectile was already launched. If you want to spam, you have low tracking, if you want high tracking, you can't spam.

Little tip for Law of Regression, you don't need to meet the requirements of a seal to cast it as long as you have the int requirement for regression. At least I didn't meet the requirements of the erdtree seal to cast dragon bolt successfully. this was a mechanic in ds3 as well

I used to do the backstep thing with the pursuers spell. When u get close enough u can spin and each Orb would fire at a different interval making it very hard to dodge roll away from. then I could rush in and either cast another spell off time with the pursuers orbs or I could bring out the moonlight greatsword and start staggering.

Dodging by jumping also might have to do with the weapon you have. It deactivates your lower body hitbox, but sometimes your arms are down (with staves, for example) so big weapons that make you keep your arms up help you dodge by jumping.

THE COUNTER TO STARS OF RUIN, rolling in rather than away or to the side.
@joshuareinhardt46302 жыл бұрын
Doesn't really counter it, just creates two scenarios: either your opponent rolls to the side and eats the hits or they roll forward and you catch them with a different cast. That's the real strength of spells like stars, you can force your opponent to do things then capitalize on whatever they do. Scott even talks about that advantage in his first video of this build, and its not exclusive to stars, smart mage play in general can really control the battlefield through zoning.
@gron15402 жыл бұрын
@@joshuareinhardt4630 Generally mages who spam stars, aren’t expecting you to roll in and even if you do (which I brought up because in this exact video he states and I’m quoting him, “you shouldn’t be able to roll through the entirety of stars of ruin.” Which is just false, you can roll through the entirety of stars by rolling into the spell, just as that invader did. Which is directly a counter, based on your logic any attack “makes an opponent react” so stars of ruin is only special in that regard, due to the lack of thought required to use it, Whilst the zoning is strong it’s not unstoppable. Generally what happens with me after completely dodging SOR and closing the gap, the mage panic rolls a bunch and gets roll caught. Even if they are a good player by closing the distance SOR becomes essentially unusable, forcing them to switch to either defensive and trying to make distance, or the smarter move switch to slicer and try to melee duel, which I’d much prefer as at least we become equals. Either way it strictly debilitates their usage or reliance on Stars, which I consider a counter.
@joshuareinhardt46302 жыл бұрын
@@gron1540 he rolled it completely BC of high latency. you quote Scott but neglect when he said that every high level pvper agrees there is no consistent way to completely avoid all of stars damage. I assume the high skill players he's referring to are past vets of the series and frequent tournament participants, and i guarantee they know more about the trappings of the game than you or I. You are right that most mages will panic after casting it if you roll toward them though. I just thought you were wrong to claim there is a way to avoid all damage of stars when there isn't consistently unless you intentionally strain your bandwidth so you have a bad connection. If you were to look at all the framedata and hitboxes for both a cast of stars and the roll animation you'd see that its an inevitability to eat some hits due to roll recovery frames. This is why Scott says the only true counter is bloodhound step, it has next to no recovery frames and when you add the tiniest bit of latency to that equation (which will be in every duel) it becomes basically godmode. This is, in principle, also the same reason the guy Scott was fighting was able to fully roll it: his latency was so high (full one second desync on hit) that Scotts hit couldn't register on his client due to the desync. Funnily enough understanding netcode is very important in souls PvP because the peer to peer system is shite
@gron15402 жыл бұрын
@@joshuareinhardt4630 Okay buddy, as someone who has spent over 700 hours in this game and thousands of hours in souls games. The vast majority of that being pvp, I’m telling you directly from experience, you can dodge the entirety of stars of ruin by rolling in, it’s not a matter of latency and I’ve tested this with friends. Consistently if you dodge the initial projectile, then just spam roll inward you will dodge every proceeding projectile in stars of ruin. Bloodhound step trivializes the spell and makes it so you have the option to dodge to the side or in completely negating it, this is much simpler but not the only way. Do you really think I’m just claiming something that I haven’t personally tried and consistently do? You claim every high level player states this, a literal baseless claim. Chasethebro as an example has gone over this, rolling in is the direct counter to SOR, not to mention a plethora of skilled souls players in the community are aware of this tactic already. You think I just came up with it? After scouring countless Reddit forums and KZfaq comments I heard from others that this is the counter, many souls players. Not gonna base everything off what one person says, just because one guy who is good at the game states something, does not make it fact. He’s been wrong about things before, especially considering this game is new. Latency does play a part but it does not always dictate what can or cannot be dodged, especially considering that like I’ve stated, I personally have tested it not connecting to some random strangers, but with a friend, with both of us having around 10-20ms of latency, both he and I were able to dodge the entirety of stars of ruin by rolling towards the caster. Which like I stated negates the use of the spell. Rolling in while not as effective as it was in, lets say, DS3. It’s still highly effective against spells, all spells can be rolled into, functionally countering them.

@@gron1540 I guess you're entitled to your opinion man but keep an eye out, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets banned in tourneys because I'm definitely not alone in thinking it can't be consistently dodged without BHS which is also banned. Not saying it definitely will be but I personally would be surprised if it doesn't end up that way. If you disagree that's totes fine tho :)
