Thank you so much for watching. If you are new here, I'm Heidi and I live aboard my Narrowboat The Rum Wench and travel the UK's Canals in search of Adventure. After selling my house to experience an alternative lifestyle I bought a canal boat and a camper van which as a solo female who loves to travel, gives me the best of both worlds. I have recently got myself a new addition to the crew, a fabulous companion - my little rescue dog Bonny who is an absolute joy. I also work full time off grid from my tiny home and trade at canal festivals as The Pirate Boat

@john47jones me for one. I remember that storm, the same week that I rescued a mobile phone from the bottom of a new bit of canal. Nice flat bottom with no accumulation of silt and random load stones to contend with. Felt it with my bare feet and even picked it up with my foot. Would have put my head under or swam down if it came to it - as i did for another person's pair of glasses a week or two later!

First thing to do with any electrical item that gets wet is to take the battery off. Current flowing though water is what causes corrosion and eventually destroys it. Take the battery off then you can run it under the tap, dry it off and it'll be perfectly fine. Tie some cork balls to it for next time it takes a swim!

It’s all dried out but the battery is knackered … luckily I have spares 😃🏴‍☠️ it’s usually on a magnetic tripod with a magnet mount and I stick it to the side of the boat and everything but I knocked it off in stress 😂😂

Oh Heidi that was a tough day, but you not only managed to keep smiling through it, with a few curses 🙂 but made me laugh too. A rum, or several, were well in order. Bonnie must be so excited by her new life, new places, new smells, Swans, ducks and new dogs nice food and walks and then she has you too.

You need a landing net. A long time boater friend told me to get a fishing landing net "your bound to lose something to the cut". Am I glad I did, as within a week I dropped my phone in the drink, on the third sweep I got it and it saves you having to dive in. The one I got off Amazon for £15 was "Fishing Landing Net, Xndryan 180CM Telescopic Fishing Net Pole for Carp Trout Fishing, Stainless Steel Folding Landing Nets, Long Handle Fishing Nets for Ponds". It came in handy for fishing out other people's sun glasses, keys and a rudder handle pin.. 😎

Been watching these for months. Excellent!. It's all your fault!, well you and Robbie Cummings. I've bought an old Liverpool 58ft cruiser stern. Currently meandering down the Oxford. Weeks with no gas, no running water, no leisure batteries. 6 weeks in now and loving my new life. THANK YOU!!!!

A bin bag round her shaft, and go pro in the drink. Lilting round a fallen tree, making sure she doesn't sink! Continuing at a tidy pace, met by gnat's balls in her face. But the rum was a bigun and went down well. Worth it, after a day from hell. Cheers Heidi

Hi Heidi, wow what an adventure you had this video glad you got your camera back. Yes people are a bit strange sometimes and say it’s only a GoPro but this is your livelihood or part of , glad you’re okay and little Bonny , Love and appreciate you both. I have two dogs here in Australia one is a kelpie, cross cattle dog and my other dog. She is a pure bred kelpie. I just love my little babies like you said some days you should’ve just stayed in bed on 17 September 2018. I had a major truck accident and lost my right leg above the knee, plus heaps of other things like back fusion with two titanium rods. Etc etc etc but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Another great episode Heidi. When I rented our Narrow boat, way back in 2008, I as skipper was instructed to lift the prop shaft hatch, EVERY evening when we'd switched off, and check and remove all weed/grass from the shaft. For the week I had it there were no problems. It's called preventative maintenance. However accidental jamming can happen. I also when I was a saltwater liveaboard, had my keys for my yacht attached to a float buoy. Also camera. No cell phone cameras back then. Glad your camera works ok. Heidi you really are inspiring me to want to live on the canal. trouble is I have 5 young pirates that need to flee the crow's nest first. but my future is to buy a Narrowboat and live peacefully. Tip for the future. My old engine would bang something and stop dead. I quickly learned that a lump of wood, too big to break, had been hit by the prop and maybe jammed between the blades and the hull/weedhatch bottom. Sometimes nothing there as it had just floated off when the prop stopped. Just start the engine, as you eventually did and it would fire up and run normally as the obstruction had left the scene. OK. check in the hatch when possible but a 'sudden stop' is most likely a plank of wood or branch rather than debris like rope etc., Stuff round the prop or shaft will cause a rough running rather than 'dead stop'. Engine failure is also accompanied by rough running and smoke. Rarely a sudden stop. Something we all had to live with and part of the fun as is the resultant swim. OK in the sunshine but not when there is ice on the cut. Great trip. Good to learn the camera was OK. Keep on Rum running.

Thank you 😃 yes I’ve had a log wedged before and I had to saw it to get it out but often my engine stalls with rope, once with so much fishing wire 😞 I’ve had a child’s buggy - canvas, frame and wheels, a duvet and even a full length duffel coat 😂😂 it’s the joys of having a deep drafted boat with a huge prop 😂😂

When I used to go up the Llangollen the lock keeper would come and ask my draft because Max allowed was 1foot 10". I used to tell him mine was "only 30". His maths was never good! The prop was 26". Size matters.

The sky is so beautiful! You take such wonderful video. Oh man, some of those locks are horrid to work. It's always good of you to show the other "shitty" side of boating life, like dropping your camera in the water, shit. But you got it, yay!! And then the engine, yes check the transfer case, etc, but dang you got this all down. I really like that you show this stuff. It's important for all boaters, and especially for new boaters, to see these things and let them know they really do need to learn. You are spectacular, I mean that! Best narrowboat blog ever. Great ditty this week. 🙂

If you put the camera in a bowl of rice, this is supposed to "draw" the wet out of it. You should always remove the battery, as quickly as possible if a camera or phone goes overboard. What a day you had, nearly drowned, nearly starved (did not do the shopping) Engine seized and then in the back entrance, your wooden leg burnt down!! Keep smiling Heidi, you always give us something to smile about, and that this week, was seeing Bonney trotting along the towpath, with her by then nicely dried Mummy!! Be good,

Hello Heidi ..... Ah the joys of home ownership ... whether it is a narrowboat or a sticks and bricks land home, or a caravan or a sailboat ... homes have issues .... I have mucked out many a toilet disaster in my time in my sticks and bricks home. I have also noticed that when one things happens there is often a few other delightful (not delightful really) issues pop up to make life even more interesting. I totally love that you take us along with you and we get to do your day with you whether good or bad ... life is never 100% calm and glorious ... it has its ups downs and all arounds. Anyone interested in living aboard a narrowboat or other watercraft needs to know that there is always work involved keeping your home functioning properly. It will take awhile for Bonny to really settle down fully now that she no longer has the hormones to drive breeding desires and you are doing a totally amazing job of teaching her to be a good pirate. Save a spot on the Rum Wench for me for next Thursday ... I'll be there

Put the camera inside a bag of white rice if you have some. It takes 4 or 5 days of rest in a sealed bag, the rice usually does a nice job of absorbing moisture .

lol, is it so hot the cows wanted to swim? lol. i'm kind of surprised there is not a battery powered impact wrench and socket you could use on the locks to raise and lower them. dive, dive, dive, the horn... reminded me of a submarine diving. lol

We aren’t allowed to use them as the lock paddles are over 200 years old and some have tried and broke them and then the lock is out of action 😂😂😂

Having seen a few narrow boater videos where gear goes for a swim and the magnets can’t recover it has me wondering if a clam rake might be worth carrying - thanks for bringing us along on the good days and the not so good - best memories often come out of when things go sideways

Phew I'm exhausted now. SO much genuine drama. A dive in the cut, a lost and wet camera, stalled engine and weed hatch delving. Nearly forgot the pesky tree and the going aground. I guess if we watch your lovely vlogs we have to take the rough with the smooth. Hoping next week's episode is going to be better for you. Lol this one really was an 'episode'.

Not good when things don’t go according to plan. We were setting off for a few days away earlier this week, got the car loaded, dogs in, house locked, car wouldn’t start! New battery needed. These things are sent to try us. Glad you are chugging along again.

You should relocate to the Bridgewater Canal, no locks on it.🎉 Ship Canal are all manned locks too! Lymm, Grappenhall, Stockton Heath, Moore and Daresbury are all nice. Good Morrisons Supermarket shopping in Stocking Feet too.😂 I lived near them all once.😂
