You most likely over twisted your safety wire, a good twist rate is 28 twists per inch and wire it in the pulling tight direction. To many twists makes the wire weak and might/ will break under high stress.

Guys, You should think of replacing the standard shackles up the mast with a four part shackle which consist of a bow, a threaded pin, a nut and a cotter pin and that will never come undone, I come from the offshore industry and these 4 part shackles are now the norm. Fair winds and happy sailing enjoy a safe passage. Cheers Rob 🤠

That flying fish is amazing trolling bait. Don't throw it overboard, hook through the head and send it out a 100 yards.

Long swist without over torque, stainless wire doesn't need mega twist. Good catch y'all ❤️🇺🇸👌

Lucky you found it. A safety shackle may be better suited to that location, rather than a screw pin shackle.

Glad to see that even your bad luck kinda turns out to be lucky, knowing how much worse it could have been...Thanks for these short videos while crossing, with just the 2 of you making the passage, there probably isn't a lot of time for filming and editing...

Safety wire isn't there to keep it from loosening. It's there to keep parts from falling off if they do loosen. Maybe try some Loctite on the next one.

Perhaps a tenuous correlation: however, in my oldskool US Navy daze we replaced seizing wire at prescribed time intervals (regardless apparent visible wear or lack thereof). For such a relatively inexpensive consumable, one might simply replace seizing wire during regular rig maintenance intervals - rather than suffer a potentially catastrophic failure in a most inopportune time? 🤔

Lashings are the way to go. Widely used all over rather than metalic shackles. With the advent of Dynema they are back in la mode. Even my sheets are attached to clew via dynema tails lashing.

I've had a few of those fail at my traveler/main sheet interface. replaced with dyneema ring I learned how to splice from The Rigging Doctor. I just keep a spare, look after chaff, and don't worry any more.

Well, it's just weird how that happened. I'm sure you'll fix the problem, Bill. I have heard of the death role. That's something to do with the spinnaker pole, right. Thankfully, you are okay, and the bed linens cleaned up. Stay safe, catch your next video

Spoiler alert: I know you made it to the South Pacific cuz I saw you both on a Delos video. Luv to you both!
@brucerhodes81972 ай бұрын
I think you are mistaken.. I commented on Delos most recent video about their decision to sail 400 miles instead of the 40 mile trip they had planned. I also commented on buddy boats and how Bill & Grace are my favorite Delos buddy boaters, but I've been enjoying them buddy boating with WeSail (Erica & Warren). This is Brian's reply to me from earlier today: "@svdelos 5 hours ago, Yes we were so happy with the decision too, what amazing conditions we had! And yes we miss Bill and Grace so much too! They are actually crossing the Pacific now, but unfortunately looks like we will miss each other for now as we are leaving soon to go to Australia and start working on Delos 2.0. Erica and Warren have become great friends of ours this year, actually we've had such a great little crew of buddy boats here in French Polynesia, it's so interesting how much the cruiser scene has changed since my first time passing through FP all those years ago, absolutely love it!"

What is a death roll?
@CalicoSkiesSailing2 ай бұрын
rolling end to end on the beam haha.. seems exacerbated by the main collasping and filling and as the boat list the genoa collaspes and rolls it back over hah
