OSIRIS-REx is the third mission in NASA's New Frontiers Program. Its goal is to explore near-Earth asteroid Bennu, a remnant from the dawn of the solar system, and to return a sample of Bennu to Earth in 2023. OSIRIS-REx launched in September 2016 and arrives at Bennu on December 3, 2018. This video illustrates each of the mission's carefully-designed orbit maneuvers and mapping campaigns on its journey to Bennu and back.

I thought landing on Titan was the most impressive demonstration of celestial navigation until this Bennu encounter. Encountering an asteroid may not have the 'glamour' of encountering planets and moons, but this is clearly more challenging.

I thought so too based on how many drastic changes in orbit it's going to make once it arrives at Bennu. Then I looked up the size of Bennu - it's only ~250 meters in diameter. With an object that small, even making all those maneuvers around it should only use a tiny amount of fuel. Wiki says the craft carries about 1250kg of fuel, but I guess most of that must be getting used in getting to Bennu and then getting back home.

@@specific_pseudonym They can be that tight beacuse Bennu has a ridicilously small amount of gravity. As they said, it's the smallest object that another human made object has orbited. @danielpava
@danielpava 3 жыл бұрын
Bennu's orbit is also altered by solar radiation, temperature variation and shocks received from fragments that it releases due to its rotation and porosity, as it has a small mass and does not have an electromagnetic field for radiation deflection. It is very exciting to see how such a small object behaves in space, so different from what we are used to

Absolutely phenomenal mission & a beautifully done, highly educational video. Kudos to the incredibly talented & creative folks at NASA for coming up with this amazing tour de force! But … (color me a curmudgeon here & guilty as charged, I suppose) was it really necessary to repeat 'OSIRIS-REx', with the exact same inflection, no fewer than 27 times in the narrative? For me, after many repetitions, it became distracting to the point of irritation. Just my opinion, & hopefully taken as constructive criticism. Otherwise - amazing endeavor! Fingers crossed for a flawless success!

This is the asteroid that has a high potential of earth impact as well in the mid to late 2100s. One thing they don’t say here is that during this whole process they are getting better telemetry data on its course so they can figure out if this asteroid also needs to be deflected to prevent impact. Problem is, this asteroid is nearly the size of 3 football fields and has an insanely high mass, (the return sample will allow us to estimate the mass better as well) the detailed mapping allows us to determine the center of mass as well so we know where to strap the rockets on required to deflect this asteroid safely away from earth’s path for good. Nice of them to let us know this huh? I found this out years ago. They had to alter nasa eyes application to remove the asteroid flight path from the app as well so it wouldn’t freak people out, but the way we are returning the sample is to deflect the probe 4 degrees off the orbital course (essentially forcing the probe to impact earth or rather put it in the way of earth so earth impacts the probe like a train does a car on train tracks) only 4 degrees difference at the right time and the asteroid could be parked in front of earth all the same. Over the course of the next 100 years gravitational forces of the planets and such will make that 4 degree change happen, and a mix of timing and orbital positioning and well find bennu a new resident of planet earth, and it’ll destroy all life here as we know it upon impact. Thankfully I’ll be well dead and buried by then, but our great grandkids generation will be the ones having to deal with it in their primes. So educate your kids in orbital mechanics so they’ll know what needs to happen to get this sucker deflected if in fact it’s going to get in earth’s way. The proper push of about 2000Dv about a half orbit away toward the ascending node or descending node will do the trick. It’ll deflect the asteroid around the north or South Pole and sling the sucker out of the solar system. If you want to be real tricky they could aim it at a Jupiter encounter to help sling it out of the system with the gas giant’s gravity assist just like they did the voyager probes, or just let it ram into Jupiter. (Course that could also effect Jupiter’s orbit so it’s best to just sling it out to deep space)
