Allergy symptoms often involve nasal congestion. In most cases, people turn to over-the-counter decongestants to open up nasal passages. Some of these medications contain phenylephrine that is intended to treat nasal congestion. Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said that phenylephrine taken orally in pill or liquid form is not effective in treating nasal congestion.
