Here are some tricks used by NASCAR transmission builders that I use to build class specific racing 4 speeds that require synchronizer rings and no coolers.

When I was a machine tool operator at a B&S back in 70's I had the opportunity to work in the machine tool division gear section. I remember we used a machine that would shave the gear and then after heat treating I would hone the gears. Check them for run-out and all that then and not least I would match any two gears that would be mated by the amount of decibels they recorded in a sound proof booth. There was a lot more to than what I am mentioning here. Your video brought back memories. Thanks
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 5 жыл бұрын
You are correct, that is how it was done in the old days. They hobbed, heat treated, and shaved, correcting for distortion. Now most gears are ground after heat treat and with CNC type machining, better alloys, and better control of heat treat, some steps are eliminated and quality and profile accuracy are greatly improved.

Just received the first book from Amazon today. Been reading it most of the day. Great photos and explanations. I have a Tremec 176 and Dana 300 for a Jeep CJ8 and a Tremec 177 or 178 for a full size jeep so that is why I am interested in learning more about them. So far I have enjoyed all of the videos and some of the information is actually sinking in so there is hope.

Fascinating look at one of the ways 'stock' road racing cars are prepped in subtle but important ways. In addition to the improved cooling, reliability, and shift action, I'll bet this procedure is worth about 3-5 hp when the gearbox internals are really spinning up a storm in there. Thanks, Paul.

These videos are always a great watch! 😊 And you always learn something new.. I doubt I'd ever see any of the transmissions you work on since I'm in the UK, well, maybe the T5, but even that's rare over here.. If I had the money, I'd send you an LT77 or an R380 gearbox, as I feel it would be entertaining to get your opinion on a British gearbox.. Not sure if you have ever seen a factory gearbox with an oil pump, oil filter and pressure fed hollow mainshaft! 👻 The boxes are very rare though, as the UK doesn't have the same car culture that the US has. Exploded boxes don't get rebuilt often, they get scrapped, and vintage cars like my 74 P6 V8 get more people complaining about the noise and the pollution than the fact it's a neat car.. Keep up the good work! 😊

Love this channel of yours Paul! Your skills at working on transmissions and your ability to explain things in simple to understand context, is fantastic! I didn't find anything on your channel about NV4500's though. The one in my Dodge Cummins is giving me some issues and I'm planning on rebuilding it. Would you recommend staying with the factory style carbon fibre synchros or switching over to brass? Appreciate it if you can give me any feed back on that! Keep up the awesome work!

Always use the carbon rings since the gear cone angles are designed for them. I would suggest not using the Amsoil but the recommended Synchromesh oil.

Nice, I haven't messed with a lot of car transmissions (although I had a super T-10 I bought for a 73 Corvette I had) but I set up a lot of Harley transmissions and for the last 11 years I've been getting into setting them up around road racing standards, I've been using an electrical insulation paint to coat the insides of the cases to keep the lube from wanting to cling to the inside of the casing, I'm gonna check into the Teflon coating trick, where do you send yours to for coating?
