I REALLY hate to see that his career went downhill like it did. Bobby Jr was a good driver in his day, just not good enough to impress Cup owners very much. Had things gone differently for him, I can legitimately see him winning a championship for the Trucks or Xfinity Series. Losing his father was going to be a struggle no matter what, but he was still a strong enough driver that I think that had things been different, he could still be around today. His career was just plagued by inconsistency, driving for bad teams, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

This guy will always be a legend in my book. He and his whole team brought their trailer and car to my elementary school back in 2002-2003(??). It was like an on site field trip. They even signed one of those team postcards that the merchandise haulers used to hand out in the 2000s for me. I would still love to know who either knew them or had the connections to make it happen because it wasn’t like we were a big school in a city.

@Ultimate23Dragon
@Ultimate23Dragon Жыл бұрын
@@nascarsteve The McDonald's sponsorship for Cal Wells actually started in 2000 with rookie (& *actual* racing bust) Anthony Lazarro. He was Cal Wells' original pick to race the McDonald's car after a season in what's now known as the Xfinity Series... He. Was. Awful... His entire NASCAR car career last shorter than Andy Houston's Cup career. After Anthony was ditched by the guy who brought him to NASCAR from open-wheel, Andy Houston then became the new McDonald's guy after Bill Elliott's team folded. Unfortunately Andy's team was basically the guinea pig with Ricky Craven's Tide team being top priority having existed the year prior with Scott Pruett. Andy had no luck & definitely did not have PPI's top equipment. Andy's team was shut down after 3/4 of the way through 2001. McDonald's remained as a secondary sponsor on Craven's team a while after until they eventually left PPI... All because Cal Wells never prioritize the drivers McDonald's sponsored.

As a long time Bobby Hamilton Sr. fan i always had lots of high hopes for his son to do very well. I was very happy how we was so close to winning the Busch series in 2003. While my man Sr. Won the truck championship the following year. I felt devastated when he passed in 07 and how Jr just couldnt go on to race. And when Jr joined PPI I didnt have high hopes. I hated to see PPI Motorsports go out like that, not even 5 years after the iconic Darlington win with Ricky Craven. If they had better resources, and with the support from Procter & Gamble, McDonald's, Super 8 Motel etc., they could've been a powerhouse team. Before a driver gets labeled a bust, it should be considered what kind of equipment they had an opportunity to drive in their career. The best equipment Bobby Jr. ever got to drive was the Cal Wells 32 which according to Bobby’s recent interview on the Scene Vault podcast, was basically a 3rd tier RCR hand me down operation that was on par with an ARCA equipment. I wouldn’t call Bobby a bust because of that.

Surprised you didn't mention his attempted comeback in ARCA a few years back, as well as the legal issues that came with it.

Raced with BH Jr in iRacing & he certainly had anger issues. I expected him to be a leader but instead he ended up being someone to avoid. I was highly disappointed.
@Ultimate23Dragon
@Ultimate23Dragon Жыл бұрын
He was screwed over a lot in his career & dealt with a lot of internal pain, & a lot of it in a short amount of time. -BS way to lose the 2003 title to an *actual* bust who was in a ride he *never* deserved - The bust that is Cal Wells - Losing his dad to cancer - The people who took over BHR after Bobby Sr.'s passing didn't want him involved - Rensi wasn't what it was when he returned - The bust that is Landon Cassill - Attempted to make a comeback in ARCA only to be scammed by Roger Carter, who then tries to pawn off his scam on to him to avoid jail (& failed) - Owned a track where a team caught cheating there one day threatened to kill him for DQing them I don't blame him for being bitter about how things have gone & wanting nothing to do with NASCAR or ARCA anymore. iRacing is the closest thing to racing he does nowadays. I'm not sure he ever got the chance to overcome his bitterness regarding a lot of that, especially losing his Dad literally the day before his birthday. I know there's the phrase "Time heals all wounds", but I'm not sure his ever did.
