Hardly a bust. Evernham replaced him after ONE SEASON, in which he nearly won twice. Oh, and his replacement, Jeremy Mayfield, had the exact same points finish in 2002, a worse average starting position and only a marginally better average finish. Atwood was sent to a terrible satellite team and never truly recovered. I'd say he got screwed over more than anything.

That's a little harsh. Had it not been for a late race caution while leading at Phoenix at the end of 2001 he would have won that race. Not to mention another late race caution that cost him the win at Homestead a week or 2 later while leading again. Then shipped off to a satellite team that was utter garbage. Finally landed an 'ok' Busch ride in 04, almost won a race there. Then he got dumped by Fitz when he was AHEAD of teammate Tim Fedewa in points before the end of fhe season. Explain that one too me. Didn't exactly get the fairest shake. Brought up too soon, and didn't spend as much time at the shop as he probably should have very early on...yes. Given the right opportunity, and a fair chance..the kid could drive.

Thing is, at that time there was what, 55, 60 seats in cup cars? Counting start and parks. There’s say 900 short tracks, maybe 20 top tier regional series and back then a couple national ones.what do you figure it at, probably at least 5000 drivers trying to take your job. Maybe 200 good enough to be there. If you get saddled with a label like lazy fair or accurate or not, that’s a tough deal. Dudes like Ray Evernham want workaholics. Was he good? Oh yeah, I figured he’d still be out there today but it doesn’t always work out how you want it. A shame too.

I always felt had Ray shown more confidence in his young driver he could have succeeded. He was rushed at such a young age into cup and then moved after his rookie season to a satelite car for the team. Destroyed his confidence and he was bounced out. Joey Logano took a few years in cups, Erik Jones and Chase Elliot finally won this season, and Daniel Suarez still has 0 wins closing in on almost 2 full seasons. Now days teams luckily have more patience with there drivers but I always felt back then that the field was deeper with talent.

The part that was a bit sad to me was that the Ultra/Evernham co-ownership ended with 2 races left in 2002, so Atwood was released from the car. The 2 races left were his best races in the 2001 season, Phoenix and Homestead. The #7 car was pretty bad in 2002 though, so Casey doing well those races weren't a given. But the stats WERE on his side.

Probably my favorite driver who never broke through. I got into NASCAR as a 7 year old kid in 96 so seeing this 17 year old race at daytona was just awesome to a kid like me.... plus that 19 car with the mountain dew green was bad ass lol IMO he was a victim of something that drivers are suffering from to this day.... being pushed through the ranks and eventually given up on far too soon. IMO he should have gotten another year in the 19. Kurt Busch also was a rookie in the same year, and he also DNQ'd in 1 race and finished BEHIND Atwood in points. Yet he wasn't thrown out of the 97 after that year, and he went on to become a champion 3 years later. It's also not a coincidence his best race in 2001 was at the racetrack where he had his best race in 2000. Shows you how important experience was to him.

At DAYTONA in 2001, he only had pressure from Ray on a fresh team, fans expecting "the next Jeff Gordon" by association with Ray, Chrysler coming back into NASCAR, rookie of the year battle, HYPE, and being youngest. Casey got a shot for Ray Evernham motorsports, but did not want to run Cup at that point. By request of Bill Elliott. Bill's brother Ernie had lost his son Casey to cancer, and wanted to mentor as a past champion, a young promising driver. Together with RAY, they tried out Casey Mears (wrecked a few cars), Casey Atwood (wrecked a few cars), and Kasey Khane...who ran well right off the truck. Evernham Motorsports "SHOP" was NOT located in Charlotte area....it was up in HICKORY, NC. Nashville is/was more the hub in NASCAR for Busch Series.

Help Me I doubt it. Atwood was rushed to Cup in 2001, coupled with the fact that Atwood didn't take his responsibilities seriously and he was moved to a godawful Ultra Motorsports team in 2002 that he was released from three races early. Some of the blame can go on Evernham's mismanagement of him, but Atwood did not hold his end of the bargain up.

I certainly rooted for Atwood to win races and do well in 2001, as I enjoyed seeing the newcomers make names for themselves. But it was a struggle for a lot of 2001, probably because of Atwood not putting in the effort to mesh better with his team (he admitted in an interview several years back he could have done more than rely on his talent alone). Then he started to pick up traction towards the end of 2001, running well at Phoenix and almost winning Homestead. But it was too late and he was demoted to the #7, which wasn't even co-owned by Evernham for the whole season.

I had the privilege of racing against Casey Atwood in 2001 at the height of his popularity and expectations. I am also a huge Dodge booster so I was a bit of a fan. I was going to college at NADC at the time and racing on weekends at his home track (Highland Rim just north of Nashville) and he came home to race for the weekend because cup was off. While personally he was kind of a smug and standoffish guy at that time it was obvious, especially in person, that he was an incredibly talented driver. To hear some kid who sounds like he's never left his basement call him one the worst drivers ever is cringy af. Casey could have made a very good living racing a small local tracks but he decided to take a once in a lifetime chance and shoot for the moon. We could all hope to be so lucky to have such an opportunity. Funny thing is for me personally it did come to where everyone was telling me if I really wanted a job in the racing industry then I had to move to Charlotte. And because the market is over saturated there it's difficult to get noticed. It wasn't unreasonable to want to stay in Nashville, especially since he dominated the market, it had been a hotbed of racing for years and still is. I reached a crossroads when I graduated and I decided I'd rather be a truck mechanic. Sounds like I need to start making motorsports videos though.

This may sound like a very crazy and whacked out idea of a driver move I personally would like to have seen happen in the 2002 NASCAR Cup Series season, but guys, ladies, here we go: Robert Yates Racing should've expanded to three cars, and signed Casey Atwood to drive it after he was released from Evernham Motorsports' #19 car after the 2001 season. Atwood had good racing talent at times, and was slowly improving as the 2001 season progressed. Also, imagine how greatly Atwood and his career would've benefitted from having Dale Jarrett and Ricky Rudd as teammates to learn from? Maybe Atwood might've had a longer career in NASCAR's premier division, and he might've won lots of races, maybe not, but a scenario like this might've greatly helped Atwood have a more successful career in NASCAR.

Listened to this guy on the Dale Jr Download and I have a different opinion. He wasn’t a bust. He was more of a victim of a bad situation and inpatients.

Generally agreed with this video. However, I do wonder- could Atwood have done better with more experience? After all, he did score a pole at Phoenix in 2001, and led 71 laps, and at Homestead came very close to a win. So I wonder, if he stayed with Evernham could he have done better? I'm not sure. 2002 was a terrible year and that was with the same Evernham equipment (not the team, however). It's hard to say.

How was he so good in the Xfinity Series and flopped in Cup? He has Evernham equipment which was decent. Was it the pressure of living up to his early success?

I would suspect that A he stayed in Tennessee instead of moving to North Carolina that way he could had put in more effort, and B rushed into the Cup Series even after he won twice.

According to Ray Evernham, Casey had the driving talent to rival any of the superstars of our sport. What he lacked was work ethic. Once he found out there was more to being a driver than driving, he simply didn't put in the effort.

Evernham’s set up logic was completely backwards when he started that team. Way behind the times. Wasn’t Atwood’s fault. Even Mayfield (a winner) did bad in his first year.
