Probably my all-time favorite race. Fantastic, clean racing all day with a variety of different drivers taking turns leading the field, only for all of that to be capped off with Earnhardt's incredible driver to the front for what would be his final career victory. It doesn't get much better than this.

@@rcracer8872 My Jerry and I married in 1991 which was when I started watching the races then with Jerry. We both singled out Dale Earnhardt Sr as our favorite driver of all time. Even Sugar Bear our beloved service dog seemed liking watch Dale race. We cheered and celebrated Dale's Daytona 500 win. On February 18th 2001 all of us cried when Dale crashed and obeyed God's calling to race for Him. We love him dearly and will continue to do so. My favorite race of all time! First race with the wicker/roof fin package and it was a huge success initially. Very clean race for Talladega's standards the drivers really used their heads out there that day and put on a good clean show without having to freight train around the top or bottom all race. Dale Jr looked like the rookie he was on those final few laps he made several mistakes in the draft that cost him a win or a top 3 finish and was lucky to not cause the big one on the last lap

I live in Wausau Wisconsin. I remember the day like it was yesterday. The bar was packed! As it was every Sunday back then. When our man, Dave Marcis took the lead, I bet they were hearing us in Talladega. The 50 of us in this tiny bar were louder than the 100,000 fans in the stands that day! An incredible moment that I’ll never forget. Oh and Dale won.

Yeah, we don't need another flame war here. He didn't say anything about how bad Kyle Busch is, so just leave it be. I disagree that he is the best NASCAR driver ever, but he is easily one of the greatest. He's also probably the the most important and liked driver in NASCAR history aside from his son. So yeah, I wouldn't say he's the absolute best talent wise, but we don't need to go searching for a fight. He's a great driver with a decent heart and a good following. That's really where the discussion should end.

Dale Earnhardt convinced me this race that he really can see the air. I can’t even pass 17 cars on a video game. I have videos here to prove it haha.

With 5 laps left, old Earnhardt didn't even look like he would factor into the equation; next thing you know, the #3 car is in 6th place, and things were ON... Masterful driving from a true legend... Oh, how he is missed.

It's like they often said of him, "He can see the air." He just had such an incredible sense of how to make use of the draft. He could find a slipstream where nobody else could.

People won’t admit that today’s plate track package is the closest it’s ever been to this one
@hawyee0418
@hawyee0418 4 жыл бұрын
The only thing that is different is in these cars you could block and not take out half the field. I don't know how NASCAR can fix that though, without taking away what makes this package good minus the last 20 laps.

Josh Jarnagin - The closing rate is so much higher with today’s superspeedway package. I’m no expert, but I suspect that the huge runs the drivers are able to get now has a lot to do with how sealed off the cars are. Even the rear fenders look like they’re an inch or two off the pavement. That and untimely blocks are largely the culprit for so many “big ones” today and it’s frustrating to watch.

Agreed. Only thing better about the 00-01 package is less Congo line, better sound, and the ability to move from the back to the front without taking the whole field out on every move.
@joshjarnagin3161
@joshjarnagin3161 4 жыл бұрын
Darren Ayotte I believe the sound is because of the dual exhaust system that ran at the time. The current car only has it going out the right side but the NextGen car brings back the dual exhaust and in turn that noise again

I would love to see them do the 2001 and 2002 EA Sports 500. Could see finally see some pristine footage for that time vs the VHS uploads of those races on here now.

I mean, the race was already upload by Nascar All Out, 7 years before, and got 500 000 views on it. Edit : 8 years before and 681k views. So, the people who wanted to see it already did.
