Go Pro or any camera is not the right tool, cameras dont have the dynamic range of a human eye. It looks brighter and darker in a video than to a human eye. But not saying iracing is any good in that. But we can't use camera as tool for comparing brightness and darkness that human eye sees. 9:10 is only because of camera limitations.

Something that wasnt mentioned in this video that i am very curious about is how much force does the steering wheel take to control? for instance i have a moza R5 and it can be maxed at 5.5 Nm of force but in iRacing you kind of have an auto set driving force. Is the auto feature realistic to the feeling irl or is it way harder to control?

One thing to note about the camera brightness (I’m a professional cinematographer) - I’m sure he’s for sure right about how it feels to him in the car, but GoPros and Cameras without manual settings like his visor cam, don’t have the latitude to get the Exposure levels (brightness) right between a really bright sunny day and the darker shaded car interior. The cameras used in broadcast from NBC and Fox have much more latitude and have professionals controlling the exposure on the camera to get the balance better. The human eye has much better latitude compared to any camera but takes longer to adjust. So if you’re in the shade on the frontstretch and driving into the sun on the backstretch, your eye will struggle to adjust quick enough and it likely gets worse during a long race.

Yeah I recall some years ago either NBC or Fox gave a live demo on how much THEY adjust for night races compared to a fairly 'raw' video feet without compensation. It's INSANE how much brighter everything looks on TV versus real world. What looks clear as day on TV isn't always that visible or obvious when on site watching in person. Mike Joy and whoever else was broadcasting at the time made it well known that the TV cameras see A LOT better than they could in many cases. It makes you wonder exactly how spotters can see at all in night races with the way track lights hit going off turn 4, given that the track lights are aimed forward such that they don't blind the drivers. You can actually see that aim in on-board shots that sit on the right dash panel facing the driver.

It was so cool to see how close the view from the cockpit is sim vs reality. As I have worked on my spacial awareness to the wall it was cool to see how the "indicators" I use on the windshield are spot on in reality...

This does confirm my findings about steering ratio over the years. I literally always run 12:1 on iRacing because it feels the most natural to me. I did make it all the way to an iRacing PRO/WC license on 12:1 too, so Anthony's remarks ring true for me as well. P.S. Anthony and I had back and forth hot lap battle at Richmond IRL (the sim was in the infield). That was some fun stuff. Great video guys.

This is great. Thanks for this episode. I totally do a 10:1 ratio as well. I like to feel the wheel but really focus on not turning too hard into corners.

I always figured that changing steering ratios was kinda to do with how many sim steering wheels are smaller than IRL ones. I found myself needing to do it less when I upgraded from a G27 to a fanatec CSL DD with the CSL wheel, but even that is still a few inches smaller than what they use IRL (depending on the track and driver preference I think). So if you’re using a smaller wheel and the steering ratio is matched you have to be significantly more precise.

Yeah id be interested in the actual distance of rotation difference between a 14:1 sim wheel and 10:1 real wheel. Ill just do the math if anyone can let me know the radius/circum/diam (any of them) of a real wheel lol

@@GasGrassOrAssetto Most real nascar wheels are 15 inches diameter, that's what I got on my MPI wheel that's supposed to be a replica wheel anyways.

There is a setting in iRacing to adjust the helmet movements. But most have not changed it from default which has very little movement.

Something I've always been disappointed in iRacing is how much we have to move the steering wheel to not break loose compared to RL. That is Very apparent in these side by sides....

Yeah true but I have done 3 driving experiences and it's totally different than iracing. I mean wheel input is the same, how the car reacts is similar but still a little different but everything else not even comparable. When you add what you can feel, the gforce and the feeling of getting whipped around the corner with the change in direction it's nothing like it. I mean you even get pressed into the right side of the seat through the front stretch going through the doglegs more than I thought. The sense of speed through the corners is a expierence for sure. Iracing helps to know the track but it doesn't prepare you for everything else. Also I would multiply that because In the driving experience I'm not running 190 into a corner at Charlotte. My top speed at Charlotte was 162 mph. Also they take a way some hp so with that I'm not even feeling the full amount of what they actually feel. It was awesome. Recommend for anyone to at least do one. The 1st time I did it the 1st two laps I had a little virtugo through the corner which caught me a little off guard till I got used to it and then picked up the pace.

Lighting can be recreated in the sim, but iracing seems to prefer not to. Project cars did it pretty well.

Awesome video. For Anthony your white balance is off for filming in daylight. To get a go pro to look right outside the car the inside of the car needs to appear almost black. If your interior is clearly lit the outside will always be blown out unless your car has t-tops or is a convertible with the top down. This is because the sensor is basically shaded by the roof so the camera doesn't adjust properly. I run a DOF Reality motion rig in iRacing its incredible how much you feel those bumps you can see from the real footage. Adds so much to the feel of the sim although it is legit harder to drive. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gdZif9uA1qyzlmg.html

He said the color shift was from his visor tint, the blown out highlights outside don't have anything to do with white balance. It's the metering that makes that happen. If he puts it on spot metering it will look better for the outside.
