I remember back in the seventies there weren't just V8's running at Bathurst, they had several different classes of cars competing against each other for class honours. Theres no such thing as a spotter. My son in law, Jack Perkins is a V8 supercar driver and they just know the track. His father, Larry Perkins is in the supercars hall of fame with I think it’s 9 wins at Bathurst. In 1993 after having mechanical issues, Larry made repairs, returned to the track and won that year from last position, the man had balls of steel. Video is awesome to watch. Each year an average of 8 or 9 motors racing at Bathurst were built by Perkins engineering. Jack has a KZfaq channel with all the restorations of that 1993 car and his level of detail was impeccable.

Most viewers don't remember the time before they put the walls all the way along the track when cars would literally go through "The Dipper" with the left front tyre in the air as the hill dropped down directly beside the side of the road, resulting in a little dip in the road surface which is why it got that name.

"The drain at 'The Grate' on Mount Panorama Circuit is a pivotal feature, especially during the Bathurst 1000, where V8 Supercars approach this corner at speeds around 70 km/h (19.4 m/s). Here's what most don't think of other than race driverts, enthusiasts, petrol heads, hoons or any Aussie that has or had a high-powered Falcon or Commodore and driven it for any length of time the way they should be driven on the roads they should be driven on intuitively understand: 'The Grate' is strategically positioned at a point where the track's downhill slope abruptly shifts to an uphill gradient. This rapid change in elevation causes extreme forces on the car, including centripetal forces exceeding 5,000 Newtons. These forces are compounded by dynamic shifts in direction (yaw), lateral forces (roll), and weight transfer (pitch), requiring advanced engineering in steering and suspension systems. Engineers must design steering components capable of withstanding these intense forces while ensuring precise control and responsiveness for drivers. The drain not only assists in managing water flow during wet conditions, enhancing traction and safety, but also signifies a critical challenge in race strategy and vehicle setup. Mount Panorama Circuit is renowned for its technical demands, where every aspect of engineering and driver skill is tested to the limit. 'The Grate' epitomizes this challenge, illustrating how track features and racing dynamics converge to define the ultimate test of motorsport excellence." ✌️☮️❤️🇦🇺🍻

The Bathurst 1000; the course is approximately 6.2 km long make of that what you will, and the number of laps is approximately 161 laps As an Australian I will say this outside of the Bathurst 1000 race. Mount panorama is a public road with a 60 km an hour speed limit. When I was 10, my family went on a very large trip around Australia and we visited Bathurst and actually drove on Mount panorama. In a 4x4, and it struggled to get up Mount panorama. We are then Charlie completed the lap, but I think your best time was like 10 minutes in the skies are going around the course in about 3 or 4 mins. I will also say this I remember one year at Bathurst. We were watching the race and one of the cars spun out and just stopped when the safety vehicle got out there and checked on the driver they found he died and but it wasn’t the accident that caused his death he had suffered a heart attack at the wheel. Absolutely crazy, the sheer chaos that caused. Another year due to the sheer amount of accidents and wet weather they called off the end of the race and just chose the leader at the time as the winner without him actually crossing the finish line. Of course there was a whole bunch of backlash about that because there was like three laps to go, and there was a guy that was almost right behind him, that might of taken over and may have won the race. Lol. And the winner was so shirty with the audience, because they’re booing him that he almost swore at the audience. Bathurst 1000 the craziness that has occurred is insane but I did watch Mount panorama any time. It’s a great watch

A word about "the grate". If you actually run your front tyre over the grate, you are already nine tenths of the way into an accident. Have a good look at the footage again, the front tyre is so loaded up it is throwing smoke. Again, if you run over the grate... you're already nine tenths of the way into a huge hit.

Hi Guys, big fan , I’ve been watching Bathurst since I was a small child. I’m now 43. This race is the biggest race of our calendar 2 drivers 1000 km 6 hours 161 laps of mayhem. Only the best driver can conquer the mountain. No spotters only relying on muscle memory and the car under you. The brake change they talk about take around 25 seconds to do so they can do with I. There normal pit stop must teams will change brake pads twice in a race and rotors at least once if not twice depending on on the teams set up if the brakes and rotors are one unit. Mark Larkham who commentates this video is one of the best old drivers that use to race this course but to tell you one more fact. The king of the mountain as he is known here is Peter brock who won it 9 times. If you need any more info on Bathurst or Supercars in general oil only two happy to help. God speed, Shannon coster from Australia P.s sorry for the long comment .

The Mount Panorama circuit measures 6.213km long, with Sunday's race scheduled for 161 laps - split between a main driver (who pilots the car solo for most of the year) and a ring-in co-driver, including many previous full-time racers. Fot the rest of the year the road is a Public road.

I’ve been around that track on a sports bike going as fast as I could. The track was closed to the public for a charity event and we were there as a motorcycle club taking people around on our bikes to raise money for that charity. But before the event started we had the track to ourselves and did a few hot laps.

I’ve been to the track quite a few times and walked it a couple of times as well, this track takes for ever to walk and the inclines and drops in this track are far more extreme in person. It is definitely a lot more daunting in person over watching it on a screen

1000 feet up for 2 miles and 1000 feet down for another 2 miles, average speed over 110 miles per hour. For 161 laps shared between 2 drivers. It is a narrow single lane public road that normally has a 35mph speed limit. Not for the faint-hearted, and a dose of insanity really helps the drivers...😎🇦🇺

It's one thing to do this race in a modern, purpose built racecar, with mega brakes, mega tyres and being totally designed to do the job, but this race was founded on things like studebakers with V8s and drum brakes. Even when Holden first won in 68, the drivers were told not to use the (solid, not even ventilated disc) brakes because they wouldn't last a lap.

I remember earlier there were no curves at the end of Conrad Strait, you needed to slow down for the final corner to complete the lap. The curves were put in because enough drivers didn't slow down sufficiently and with their speed, some cars would lift off.

The only spotters are weather spotters at the top of the mountain, looking to the west for rain. Because it can be wet at the top of the mountain and dry at the bottom or vica versa. The drivers are on their own otherwise. Only radio contact with their engineer. Brake pad changes take about 15-20 seconds, some teams just change the pads others change discs, calipers and pads as one unit, and are usually covered by the fuel drop.

I have seen a few clips from some reviewers, so obviously they are out there clips of the late Peter Brock ( a absolute legend of this race and Australian Motorsport), actually with in car camera shots and speaking to the tv audience and commentary team from the car over the radio whilst driving in the race, complete with doing the gear changes and everything. There would also be other clips as well.

Spotters? There are no "spotters" in Supercars". The neasest thing to "spotting" is the team telling their drivers that someone may have a mechanical of fuel issue but the whole "inside/outside" BS in NASCAR is absent from Supercars. It is all up to the guy behind the steering wheel. I have made my pilgrimage is to Australasian motorsport's Holy Land. It is a trip that every true motorsport fan should put in their calendar at least once. I have walked most of the track and it is FAR steeper than it looks on TV. I traveled to Bathurst on Thursday, spent Friday at Brock Skyline and Saturday and Sunday in the grandstands along the start/finish straight (NOT "straightaway") then traveled home on Monday. The reason for the brake pad changes is because of the massive wear and heat degradation that happens around the track but especially in The Chase. But there were some issues with brake disks so now it is a compulsory disk and pad change so the teams have quick change packages that allow them to accomplish that change is the same time it takes to do a driver change.

Best part - it's a public road 345+ days a year. You can drive up & do as many laps as you want. Just remember, the local police have absolutely no sense of humor towards speeders on the track, and it's a 40kph speed limit (IIRC). Being a public road, there's also "Track Access" periods built in to the schedule on race weekends, for the residents to get in or out. And, yes, there are residents...

It use to be the season starter for the Supercars but now it's the season finisher

Not sure if anyone has said it, the crash with the blue car at 9:40 is when Chaz Mostert broke his leg. If you can handle watching it, you can see it happen from the onboard video. I been 6 times, camping in mainly sold out each yr, then sites the don't sell are generally gone within an hr. Supercars don't have spotters, it's all driver an car setups, only time they hear from there engineer is if something major has happened. It's 161 laps takes about 2mins 5secs to complete a lap. Brake pads are done once during the race, takes less than 30seconds for rotor and pads to be changed. They get about 30laps per tank running on E85 fuel.

It's a public road when it's not a race weekend. My dad took me around there when I was a kid, even at (mostly) road legal speeds it scared the crap out of me especially coming down Conrod Straight 😆Josh Revell has a great video (The Greatest Motor Race EVER) specifically about the 2014 Bathurst 1000 which was an absolute epic - he does a stellar job of expanding on the context of the race and drivers specifically as well as the Supercars category in general. Great race, great video, do yourselves a favour and check it out!

That corner down the bottom of Conrod(named so because a lot of conrods let go down that straight) they go through it foot flat to the floor at around 300km(around 186mph) then they “need to wipe a bunch of speed of to get through the next corner.
