Beating the Odds displays how a never-give-up attitude and a naturally talented race-car driver can tackle all obstacles and win at the sport's highest level.

Ernie Irvan was without a doubt as good as anyone who raced in the Cup Series during the 1990s. He had the talent. He had the drive. I wish he would have handled leaving the Morgan-McClure race team for the #28 a little better than he did, but ultimately I can't blame him for wanting to drive the #28. That Robert Yates team was elite during that time period

In my opinion, Ernie Irvan is the most underrated driver in NASCAR history. He won fifteen Cup races, including the 1991 Daytona 500, and he was in contention with Dale Earnhardt for the 1994 championship until he had a deadly crash at Michigan. He recovered from his injuries and won three more races before retiring.

I haven't seen the 1994 season (have seen NASCAR only after 1998) so this year i watched almost all races from '94 (still 2 to go). He was very very good. I'm not sure Earnhardt would have won his 7th. Would have been a great battle. Too bad Rusty and Geoff Bodine had so many dnfs.

I remember being about 5 years old rooting for our own Salinas born Ernie racing along side the greats like Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, Elliott, and Martin and the rest, finally about 98 or 99, or maybe even 2000. I got to meet Irvan, his father Vic, Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace at the Watsonville dirt track about 25 miles from my house at the time, all great guys and it was quite a show watching these guys sling dirt!

Such a great story, I wish it would have been a bit longer with some more history. For NASCAR, your popularity comes from the people that raced and built cars using their talent and ingenuity. The big corporate sponsors are needed for the money, but they have to much control. The heart of NASCAR is the people, and characters from everyday life, not the slicked up politically correct corporate culture we have now.

I'm 69,been a Ford fan for over 50 years. It broke my heart to lose Alan, then Davie. Two great drivers that had such bright futures, lost too soon,is such an understatement! I remember some didn't like it when Ernie was announced as the new driver for the #28. I guess all of his winning smoothed their ruffled feathers! I watched that race,Ernie winning at MIS,3 years after almost losing his life there,it sure did my heart good! I also remember a race,I can't remember if they were racing there or another track. Ernie was flying down the track & slammed right into a much slower car! I couldn't believe that happened, I don't remember the reason he gave for it. It sure demolished both cars! I learned a lot about Ernie watching this video, many things I never knew about him. I'm glad he & his family are doing well. I think if the cars were near as safe then,as they are now,Ernie would've been racing for much longer & winning many more races. Best wishes to you Ernie, enjoy your "retirement"!❤

Earnhardt was the polsitter that night at Bristol & he led something like 300 plus out of the 500 laps but Irvan caught him and passed him late, forgot how all I remember is being pissed that he lost and when Irvan got him again at the next years Daytona 500 I knew he was going to be tough to beat for the forseeable future. Morgan McLure as a race team didn't have what it took to put together a championship season so we didn't know the true measure of Irvan's talent until he sat in Robert Yates #28 Havoline Ford. As an Earnhardt fan I can admit that had Ernie not got hurt in 94, Dale might not have won the 7th Winston Cup, then again who knows maybe IF Irvan doesn't get hurt in 94 and wins the Cup, in 95 Dale doesn't spin at the end of the Winston 500. In any case, Irvan was a badass for the little bit of time that he was able to showcase his talents, I don't know if he's been voted into the HOF yet but he surely is someone who deserves it especially if you look at some of the other folks who've already gone in...

@@dedo7326 bahaha, stfu. Dillon has won two crown jewels, and has a Nationwide and Truck series championship. Is he an elite driver? No, but he belongs over some of the other dogshit in the Cup series. Godhardt Jr.'s slump from 2008-2011 at the best team in the sport would have had any other driver fired, but nepotism saved him because his daddy died and everyone worships that clown despite his death being basically of his own doing.
