Arguably THE BEST!! Always hated him as a kid growing up in the 90s because he was a Chevy driver and because he was so goddamn good lol. But he became the elder statesman of the sport of NASCAR as the years went by and I don't think there was anyone who didn't respect his greatness and everything he accomplished. Gordon was a once in a lifetime type of talent.

The first person I ever idolized as a little kid was Jeff Gordon. I haven't watched or been involved with Nascar in a little over a decade, but this pretty much made my cry. What a genuine, true, real, humble human being that man is. Beyond sad I won't ever see my childhood hero race again. So beyond happy for his accomplishments.

He was mine too. Like you, I haven’t kept up with NASCAR for a long time…that Martinsville race that just happened with Ross Chastain rekindled a lot of old love for the sport for me. Now I’m watching Dale Jr. download all day along with tons of other clips from old drivers I used to love, Jeff being number 1. When I was a kid, my dad and I didn’t watch football on Sundays. We watched the race. We watched NASCAR and my dad was a big tennis player, so we watched tennis a lot too. My two heroes were Jeff and Federer. Two GOATS of their respective sports who dominated throughout my childhood, (Jeff already being established before I was a kid in the early 2000s). I remember having all the little NASCAR cars and racing them on the carpet. Jeff always ended up winning. That DuPont Chevy with the ocean blue and lava flames was always the coolest looking car on the track, and Jeff could back it up with top class driving.

That being said, feb 18th 2001 was the day I never imagined possible! The following Monday, I cried my eyes out, inconsolably! Years of being an Earnhardt fan came out! Gordon is a cool dude, but for me, it's not the same!

Dale would get in there and work on his cars while “don’t get my fingernails dirty” Gordon would sit in the corner playing on his PlayStation.

Oh I'm completely aware, just saying Tom Cruises part in that movie was similar to how Gordon, who didn't fit the mold of a racer, and came out of california like Tim Richmond which happens to be where Gordon grew up and drove sprints then went to stock cars while tearing up a lot of equipment before really taking off.. Tim's and Gordons starts were so similar.. movie works for both.

I was and still am a Dale Sr fan and after he died I never chose a favorite. With that said, I remember Jeff Gordon tossing a sprint car over the fence and down the hill at my local dirt track during speedweek, when he was 14 years old, then getting right into his backup car and getting right back after it! I came up helping my uncle with his dirt late model but fell in love with drag racing and I do that on a local level to this day. I am an avid Gordon fan and I loved to watch him win. That Martinsville win was amazing. I'm glad it was on a Saturday night because I have to go to bed at 9:00 P.M. It was a great moment to see him get his 93rd win in front of my own eyes. And once he won I wanted him to go beat out Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr, and Kevin Harvick at Homestead-Miami Speedway. I never got to see him win a championship because I was born in 2002 and the last time he won a championship in 2001, but it was a great experience seeing him race.

Jimmie hasn't retired though. Plus he has open dates that he can fill with some Nascar races if he wishes to do so since his Indy team also has two cars in the Nascar series. Teams are allowed to have four cars.

I remember the very first NASCAR race I watched. Jeff Gordon, had won that race and I fell in love wit him (not literally) but my dad was a huge ass fan over him and to hear on that day that he was retiring, man, I was so sad. My sisters had met him. But through my grandfather. My grandpa was a state trooper in VA and Jeff's car had broken down and he was late to a pre-race meeting and he drove him there. Meeting him, I was dead the whole time. I almost cried. I miss him. Much love, Jeff.
