I colorized, restored and created a sound design for this video of city views of Frankfurt, including houses, the Main river, a busy café, landmarks (the opera, the university, Frankfurt Cathedral) and townspeople.
Video Restoration Process:
✔ FPS boosted to 60 frames per second
✔ Image resolution boosted up to HD
✔ Improved video sharpness and brightness
✔ Colorized only for the ambiance (not historically accurate)
✔added sound only for the ambiance
✔restoration:(stabilisation,denoise,cleand,deblur)
Please, be aware that colorization colors are not real and fake, colorization was made only for the ambiance and do not represent real historical data.

Many of the things you see in this video are still there. Bridges over the River Main 0:21, Hauptwache 0:35, Kaiserplatz 1:15, Opernplatz 1:47, Städel Museum 2:16, cafes by the riverside 2:37, Dom cathedral 2:50, Rententurm 5:02, Eschenheimer Tor 5:08, apple cider pubs 6:20, Goethehaus 7:20. The old city 2:60 has recently been partially restored, and you can get delicious sausages and whatnot 5:28 in the Kleinmarkthalle, the central food court. That said, Frankfurt has lost much of its charm, not only from wartime damages, but quite often due to post-war planning's ugliness and stupidity. Streets were widened for car traffic, streetcars were banished underground, and squares and public places were left naked and devoid of trees because of subways and garages underneath. Still, there's plenty of fun to be had. Very nice cafes, wonderful traditional home-made apple cider pubs and restaurants, excellent concerts and opera, nice flea markets, first-class art exhibitions. And what Frankfurt did not have in 1930: an interesting mix of cultures, with all kinds of restaurants offering good food from dozens of countries.

@martian9999

@@MrTuxracer true. And it's hard to believe, but many elements of the old facade and structure are still there, underneath the (IMO well-done) modernist shell. Traditionalist groups therefore find it compelling to restore the Schauspielhaus to its former glory. And sadly, modernist-technocrats in government want to completely re-build the Schauspielhaus for billions of Euros -- but this time, the old elements will be deleted for ever.

my beloved hometown (born in Sachsenhausen - south of River Main) ! It is so sad to see that the most of those beautiful old buildings were destroyed during WW2 , the most of those were finally and latest destroyed 1943-44. Only a few of those old buildings are still there or were rebuilt in the 80s and later ( e.g. 1:46 "Alte Oper" and 4:35 "Altstadt/Roemer") . People should know that Frankfurt was an independent city with their own coins (Heller/Taler - Freie Reichsstadt Frankfurt), it was one of the richest and most important cities in germany till the Annex by Prussia in Oct. 1866. Thanks a lot for uploading this beautiful video !

This video is a treasure, especially for us who live here. It's great to see its former beauty and its busy life. Most of downtown was destroyed in WW II . Like most big cities, it changed a lot over time and had its ugly parts. It was a good decision to rebuild the old center and other buildings like the opera . Thank you very much for uploading.

I was born in Frankfurt after the war and I have to say the skyline was pretty much the same back then as shown here until around 1970 when they started building skyscrapers. The first one (besides the hotel on the Main) I think was the Chase Bank where my dad banked west of the Old Opera House. I moved to the US but miss my hometown very much, can you tell? We lived in a small apartment facing the Main River next to the Friedensbrücke. The bathtub was in the bedroom. The toilette had no sink. My mother had to haul coal up three flights of steps to heat our apartment. The mafia met in the pub below us. My playground was the sidewalks, no grass. Occasionally we walked along the River where there was grass to look at but not walk on. In 1963 we moved to a nicer apartment across the River. Below us lived Herr Breidenstein and his wife, they did not like the noise us children made above them. He owned the printing business next to the Hauptbahnhof. Above us lived the Hille’s who were both concert pianists and we loved listening to them play piano through the floor. A very nice couple. Down the street lived the Stukenberg’s. My sister was good friends with their daughter Sylvia. Her dad was the president of the Deutsche Bahn. A gray Mercedes would pick him up and take him to work in the morning. Very nice family. Those trolleys shown in front of the Hauptwache were still in use in the 1960’s. I loved them, they were kept spotlessly clean inside with wooden benches to sit on.

95% of the buildings seen here were destroyed between 1941 and 1945. Even after the war more salvageable historical buildings were demolished to make room for the "car-friendly city". Only a tiny fraction of these historic buildings has been reconstructed.
